I’m kind of new to the game and I was trying to play the mini Keg Brawl but there seems to be unwritten rules about one only keg at a time and throwing the keg into the wall to make it disappear. And it’s not like it’s just one side doing it, both agree to do it. Is there some secret keg brawl club that normal users don’t know about?

Well, A-net has seemingly forgotten all about Keg, but some people really love the game. It was the very first mini-game upon release, although it’s kind of dead by now, compared to the many people that played back then.
Some people agree to some rules so that there can be a fair and fun game, instead of just running multiple Kegs back and forth to the goal.
It’s how they get around A-net’s neglect.
There’s some stigma against lobbing the Keg across the field as well, that’s all I can recall at the moment.

Achievment farm. Its usual to see, since anet has put a huge ammount of points to complete each achiev, then players agree with each another to instead of play the game, just throw keg between thenselves to be getting the various things towards the achievments.

Anet has a long history of putting tangible rewards into pvp modes and then completely neglecting to actually bother to make sure people don’t grossly abuse the systems for said rewards.

All true…. in the mean time the WvW achieves and rewards are well beyond anything you could a finish in this life time. Seriously.

My posts are facts as I know them, or my own opinion, and do not represent any guild.

And it’s not like it’s just one side doing it, both agree to do it. Is there some secret keg brawl club that normal users don’t know about?

They’re not exactly unwritten rules. I’ll elaborate:

1. As the game progresses, more and more kegs start spawning. Some players do not like this because it means that even if you built an early lead, you could still end up losing if your team gets hung up on all trying to steal one guy’s keg and 2 of the enemy team quietly runs back 4 or 5 kegs in the same time.

By throwing the extra kegs out of field, you stop those kegs from respawning, making it easier to control the scoring (and keep your lead). Some players will also do this by stealing the keg from a scorer near their goal and then throwing it into a wall/cart to make it unreachable.

Personally, I find this tactic to be rather lame (bordering on rule exploits) since it’s affecting the basic flow of the match itself (the respawn rate of kegs), but it is one way of denying the enemy team points.

2. Some Keg Brawl veterans have a “no Lob” rule, because skilled/experienced players are capable of consistently using Lob (skill #2) to throw the keg a long distance from the center of the field and score, leaving the enemy team with no real way of countering it.

As someone who’s done Keg Brawl enough to be able to pull this off, I agree that it’s hard to defend against, but you can counter it by “marking” the player and constantly interfering with him with dazes, kicks etc. so he can’t pick up a keg. That said, if you’re in a semi-private match with Keg Brawl veterans who want a more drawn out competition, do try and respect this rule.

3. Some of the Keg Brawl achievements are quite difficult to get. (Assists and Recoveries come to mind.) Some players therefore set up matches with the intention of farming these achievements as fast as possible. If you get into one of these matches, feel free to join in if you also want the achievements, or just play normally while leaving the achieve hunters alone. (It normally takes at least 1 person on each team to farm the achieves, so neither team is really penalised as a result.)

P.S. If there’s anybody out there who has a guild for farming the Keg Brawl achieves, please PM me! I still need my Assists and Recoveries. XD

The unwritten rules were made by a group of players that were so unhappy about me wrecking them every single match that they had to band together and declare open season on anyone who could effectively use Lob, potentially even sending it right into their keeper from half-court.

Below are two examples of what the scoreboard would look like after I was done with a match. The quickest of games could be over in two or three minutes. The third pic is the moment after I finished each of the achievement tracks, only about three weeks after I’d started playing the activity. When I was getting close to 500 wins, I was coming up really short on recoveries and intercepts, so I just got some help with those, which you can see the effects of in the fourth pic.

They’ve since booned Lob to the point where the whole format is not even fun to play anymore (I guess Throw 1.0 and Lob 2.0 were the only things fun enough to keep me interested in it), but it’s still possible with some practice to Lob a keg into the keeper from max range, which still seems to make some people rather mad.

Just as people can throw kegs into walls or carts to make them disappear, there’s a way to fool the game into spawning more kegs, if you really want them. If you throw the kegs to the south, “out-of-bounds” on the other side of the fence, and there aren’t any kegs left “in-bounds”, the game will chuck out another keg. You can then go to the other side of the fence, pick up the kegs (which don’t despawn), and throw them back into the game. If you score with them, the game does the usual thing of throwing out another keg. So if you don’t like people dropping the keg count, there’s a way to increase it too.

Check out this video I made a long time ago to show off the old way keg throwing/lobbing worked and some old bugs/exploits in the game.

Don’t expect any changes to Keg Brawl or support for any other activity in the future. ANet doesn’t care about them(/has better things to do/doesn’t think anyone else cares about them/<insert BS excuse here>).

Interesting… Didn’t know you could force the game to spawn more kegs too. Thanks for that info, Shayne.

If this what this video shows is still possible today and people abuse it to boost their achievements or have easier tiem winning the matches, everyone who uses this exploit, should get banned.

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes ~ quoted from Chris Whiteside

If they were going to take a stance on it or change it, the time to do it would have been years ago when I first pointed it out. However, activity achievements aren’t chilli pepper poppers, so it really isn’t important to them.

Besides that though, what can they really do to patch it? They could take a stance to ban anyone who is reported to be using this method for their achievements, but what in the match could they possibly change to make this sort of abuse not possible?
