What's the point of HoT?
What specifically are we supposed to be doing? is there an over all plan?
Yeah, all the information is there. Talk/listen to NPCs, those Scout things which explain plot, and follow the meta events.
Okay so avoiding major spoilers, what we as a pact commander are doing is leading an invasion into the maguuma jungle against Mordremoth, this plan goes a bit awry what with the whole fleet being destroyed and more or less dropped around Verdant brink, this is where the expack picks up and the point of the areas are as follows:
1. Verdant Brink: Gathering the remains of the pact fleet and getting them ready to mobilize deeper into the jungle
2. Auric Basin: Gathering intel and finding new allies agains the Mordrem(mostly The Exalted)
3. Tangled Depths: Another bit of gathering allies and intel, also Ley Line stuff.
4. Dragons Stand: This area is pretty self explanatory by the name, most interesting bit of the new areas because of the meta event chain.
The 2 areas in between VB and DS exist I think mostly to acknowledge that there’s other sentient life in the jungle other than the mordrem, and the existence of the Jungle dragon isn’t something they are comfortable with, leading naturally to them requiring help and then returning the favor.
Hope that made sense
I completely disagree with your argument. These maps have some of the clearest narratives of any in the game. ArenaNet has shown great improvement in this regard with The Silverwastes and now the Magus Falls maps.
Verdant Brink is about gathering the remains of the scattered pact fleet and trying to gain a foothold in the jungle.
Auric Basin is about discovering the Exalted and assisting in the defense of Tarir.
Tangled Depths is about helping the Order of Whispers blast kitten into Dragon’s Stand.
Dragon’s Stand is about striking directly at Mordremoth.
All the maps have really fun, rewarding meta-events that add a lot of replayability to the map. I think the only map in the original game that comes close to this is Straights of Devastation, but even that feels less replayable because there is only one phase to the map and it just involves a ton of escort missions. The events in Magus Falls are multi-layered and have lots of different mechanics. The world bosses are really fun too.

Thank you, sir. You are a gentleman and a scholar!
however the generic plan is indeed according to rayden described i personally don’t feel these points don’t contribute to the storyline at all. In the end you end up helping all the races, but they don’t help you at all. where’s the combined war of the itzel nuhoch and exalted to battle against mordremoth? Anet tried to bring out a decent story but in the end it just feels like 3 maps without any correlation to the personal story (haven’t played that much on the 4th map so can’t judge about that)
