I’ve been playing this game since summer of 2015. I was really into it at first, but my interest slowly decreased until I fully stopped playing it for five months. Then I came back and… really, what’s the point?

This game finds a way to punish players every chance it gets. I’ve been giving competitive modes a shot, and it’s just… beyond broken. I’m not a fan of the meta. I strongly believe people have the right to play how they want and be original to come up with their own sort builds while corresponding to a role. That’s what I tried. And I got punished for it. Whether it’s PvP or WvW, none of my 22 characters is able to do anything. A lot of players in WvW hold a major advantage most. How in the world did this mode once attracted low-level characters? I feel useless in group fights and I can’t solo against any type of class unless the other player is utterly inexperienced. The same goes for PvE as well.

Let’s not forget about how grindy this game is. How disappointing its latest content has been. The story was one of the main reasons why I stuck around, but ever since HoT came out it’s been just getting worse where I’m literally cringing at the thought of it.

It also doesn’t help that I feel quite lonely in-game. I’ve been trying to find new people to play with and joined several types of guilds. People aren’t just interested in me whatsoever. I don’t consider myself to be a saint or an kitten; I try to be friendly and even help new players. What I get are people who end up using me for some of their own goals, including new players. I give them my support, tips and ask and they just end up ignoring me once I ceased to be useful to them. The community is not what it once was. It’s bad. The people are just cruel and moronic. I was even stalked and harassed by a player. I got proof of its actions and reported it several times. I even sent tickets to ANet and nothing happened. The player is still out there, making new accounts to reach me again and again.

All I want is to have fun, but this game feels like a frustrating chore where nothing feels rewarding whatsoever.

I’m sorry that you’re not having a good time in GW2. It’s a shame that you didn’t get to experience the game when it first came out. Anet had a completely different attitude of “play your way” and they really meant it.

Lately Anet seems to be doing everything in its power to force players into content that Anet wants them to play. And let’s not forget the recent change to Power / Condi.

I hope you find a good guild to play with. I haven’t found one yet either – most do what the leaders specify and ignore everything else. Maybe look at the Guild forums if you haven’t yet? I might give them a read also at some point.

I second the opinion of Djinn. When GW2 first came out it was such a breath of fresh air. No more competition in quests, for resource nodes, etc. Players could now play successfully with other players. No more “preparing to have fun”, i.e., no grinding for gear that will again be replaced by other gear that you must again grind for, all without changing gameplay at all, just a treadmill.

And the game world…GW2 brought so much life to the game. It’s sad to see it devolve into platforming where you don’t know where to platform to (platformer obscura) with hellish annoying mobs nipping at your heels. It must be what hell is like. But, why on earth would you want to model hell into your gaming experience. I mean I want to have a cause to defeat evil forces, but I don’t want to live in hell 24/7 to do it. I’d much prefer to live in the game world conceptualized by vanilla GW2.

It does become too grindy for me.

1000s of things to unlock or collect, but each one designed as some kind of long-term goal. I log in and think about just going for one of them and just can’t do it. I tend to quit the game for months as I log in and out more frequently just not feeling inspired to do anything.

Don’t know if I explained it well.

This is like reading Skip Bayless talking about LeBron James when LeBron has the best game of his career. Is this really what people think of the same game I find to be by far the best mmorpg ever? I must have been hiding under a rock.

Honestly, I’ve had some kind of similar feelings in GW2 after I crafted legendaries… Just became more of a repetitive chore rather than random fun, so I too quit for a little while to play a different game. But the more I played any other game, the more I started to think about how flawed they were compared to GW2 (they did soooo many things right in GW2, I think the developers should win some kind of nobel prize or something), and I started to really miss GW2. But at the same time, I was getting tired of gaming in general, which can really give a negative outlook on any game you play. When I came back and started to do more than just dailies again, I found the best way to enjoy the game is not have any goals or expectations at all… Just go to the maps I enjoy the most and play the events I enjoy. Also try different things all the time, instead of sticking to one map and one event a lot… that too can make the game feel like it loses it’s fun really fast.

If you play to a point where the grind becomes noticeable, then that IMO, is your OWN fault. There’s enough variety in ways to play that unless you’re simply playing to get rewards as quickly as possible, things really shouldn’t get old unless this is the only game you play. If you play to make as much gold as quickly as possible, then ya, it’s not going to be all that fun. I’ve never understood that mindset though, because if you’re not having fun, what’s the point?

Sounds like you just don’t like the game anymore. Which is fine. You should stop playing if that’s the case. Nothing wrong with that. There are enough fantastic games out there that you’ll never get to them all.

Well.. You play a game to have something to do, and to have fun with, if it’s no longer your thing, either because there is no content at present you like or no way to get back into it that’s probably frustrating.

Ingame harassment is bad however and if it can be proven actions should take place. either by renaming your account or by reprimanding or removing the other player.

With regard to grind: No I do not see much grind if you consider the 2000 level WvW or so as a problem, those are rewards for people playing for 4, nearly 5 years straight. That’s not a grind but a reard for longe term commitment, nor is the 150 LI for legendary armor, as it is only 12-16 weeks of doing raid bosses if you go all out…
In the end this game is not about finishing the achievements instantly unless you have story rewards in mind.

Fun.

This game finds a way to punish players every chance it gets.

Not sure I agree, GW2 currently is one of the most relaxing MMOs in the market as far as pressure or required playtime goes.

I’ve been giving competitive modes a shot, and it’s just… beyond broken. I’m not a fan of the meta. I strongly believe people have the right to play how they want and be original to come up with their own sort builds while corresponding to a role.

There is not 1 competative game out at the moment where this holds true. Literally every single competative game available at the moment has a meta. GW2 is actually quite off meta since a lot of stuff works and people actually use their own builds in wvw.

That’s what I tried. And I got punished for it. Whether it’s PvP or WvW, none of my 22 characters is able to do anything.

Spvp has everyone on equal footing and gives no player any type of gear advantage. If you are having troubles here, it’s you and not the game.

A lot of players in WvW hold a major advantage most. How in the world did this mode once attracted low-level characters? I feel useless in group fights and I can’t solo against any type of class unless the other player is utterly inexperienced. The same goes for PvE as well.

WvW is for 80s now. Has been for ages (probably 4 years now). Getting to 80 and geared out in exotics takes nearly no time at all.

Let’s not forget about how grindy this game is. How disappointing its latest content has been. The story was one of the main reasons why I stuck around, but ever since HoT came out it’s been just getting worse where I’m literally cringing at the thought of it.

Story is mostly subjective taste. Sorry to hear you are not enjoying it.

Not sure what to say, harassment is never okay and you should definately report players. Not sure how you got someone so ticked off that they would keep stalking you but it’s definately a downside of having free access to the base game.

Can’t agree on the rest. GW2 is still one of the friendliest and most helpful communities MMO wise I have ever played and engaged in.

Absolutely true. Even if one is really attached to a game, there’s a point where one has to realise that stopping is a better option than permanently getting angry at something the devs do (though I can’t understand what exactly the OP is angry about – all of the things he complains about have been there for a long, long time).

I’d agree. There are times to contemplate the nature of one’s existence and action. But sometimes you just should play the game.

But that’s just me. I’m a simple person that goes out to clobber enemies (or vice versa)

I think people suffer from trying to do too much. Pick a single goal, and get good at it.

I left gw2 for a while after feeling burned out from the “grind.” Started playing BDO instead. I can now say I’m back in gw2 and happy for it. If nothing else, in GW2, after “grinding” towards a goal, atleast there isn’t an RNG roll at the end that could forfeit all the time you spent grinding.

As stated its a game that has lost its identity…
It has become a treadmill.. but worst, its a treadmill that is fighting against being a treadmill.
Crafting is beyond a joke it used to be a key feature, now you must craft a item to craft a item to craft another item that is time gated
You cant play this game without referring to a guide or web forum ie duffy
Game has more emphasis on min/ max even to require you to use a boss timer.
The gap between casual and hardcore has become huge … Raid seems to be the priory focus.
What was supposed to be a “competitive pvp” game – Is very poor.
Community is split – there are a small number of hardcore players, and a huge amount of players that just log in to do dailies and thats it, these used to be active guild members…

To many bad irreversible decisions have been made over the years, its too far gone. You either accept it/ move on or as i suspect wait for a better game to come along.

Sounds you are just not as good as your enemies. A meta automatically emerges. There is always a meta which can give you the necessary edge. In my experience 90% of PvP complaints is people who are not good at the time of the complaint.

The rest: an MMO has grind be cause they want to keep players playing. And anet is quite fair with it; if you have BiS gear once you have them forever. Most MMOs release new gear tiers with new content.

I know the feels bro. Having my kzarka fail every single time i tried to upgrade it despite having way more than the required stacks it should be succeeding at. Spending more money failing upgrades than it would have cost to just buy a fully upgraded one. People that think gw2 has ANY grind at all, oh they have no idea.

GRIND
I’m not sure about what grind you are talking about. If you are talking about ascended gear just do winter berry or any other farm on the new maps for trinkets and you can work on your armor/weapons with crafting or doing some collections. Once you get the trinkets done you can also start doing fractals that require agony resistance and you will start getting more from that

“Play as you like”
As for “play what/how you want”, you can play like that, but don’t expect to have great results with everything you try. You also need to know, that when playing in a GROUP content that requires builds that complement one another, you are one part of the group and should think for the well being of the whole group.

WVW/PVP
As stated in “Play as you like”, not every build you make is going to be good, then there is player skill that plays a part in this. I would say, first stop playing all classes and try to understand one or two, that also makes your problems with gearing them up way smaller.

Guilds
I was in few guilds back in the day when dungeons were a thing. What I noticed is that most of the time there are already groups of people made in the guild that like to play togather and do stuff togather. When i was asking for daily dungeon runs nobody responded because i was new. 20min later the leader or someone well known came online and asked the same thing people just swarmed in. Few months back I joined a guild for raiding and i was unnoticed for a month or two(not being the most talkative person is not helping me), so give it some time, if you are a good player or good company people will notice.

Helping people
If you help people, do it because it gives you some sort of contentment not beacuse you expect them to worship you after.

In the end i would like to say, that because a couple of people that have made you feel like this you should not say “The community is not what it once was. It’s bad. The people are just cruel and moronic.”. There will always be some rotten apples it is just how the world works.

If the person stalking you is making new accounts (each time), does that mean his/her old accounts were banned? Not much a studio can do to keep anyone from making free accounts, and if they aren’t free accounts, then I’m guessing the old paid accounts were terminated (by ArenaNet).

Regardless, one would need to report the new account each time, so something can be done (especially in the case of free accounts).

Good luck.

I have to agree with OP this game could use a serious infusion of purpose.

Like many others it’s fallen into the endless grind for things. Cosmetics, Legendaries, Raid Gear, Gold.

It needs an original zone/beginner experience overhaul, it needs a main story overhaul. Major enemies need to be a danger in the rest of the world, in every zone for example. World of warcraft made the mistake as well by putting world changing dangerous enemies only in locked-behind-a-pay-wall series of zones and it too suffered for it each time.

Enemies that threaten the whole world should do so, Events should bleed over into beginner zones.

Rift does this well when they release content I think it’s time to rethink the event system in place here.

First, what’s the point of any game?

You can play anyway you want. PvE anything goes. WvW anything goes. PvP you could play anything you want, but I’ll be honest if you’re going to play ranked you’re probably going to play the best build. Which there will always be one. There is basically no grind, in my opinion, ascended gear is an incredibly common drop in daily chests and fractals (I’ve gotten 4 full armor sets and salvaged uncountable items). Ascended trinkets are basically free, but even all this is optional. No collection is required. Need I go on?

Play what you want. If just hanging with guides and chatting is what you find fun, fine. If you’re a tryhard competitive player stick your feet in pvp. If you like achievement hunting and short term goals, great go for it.

I never really like the whole “play your way” mentality where people who don’t know what they’re doing just throw together a crappy build and expect to be able to compete vs. other players. You can play what you want, dps, physical, condi, support, whatever… but don’t think you’ll be able to fight against players who specifically spent the time to optimize what they are using. In fact, I don’t know of any game that works that way…

As for GW2 as a whole, it WAS a lot better at the start. A series of nonstop bad decisions since release by Anet has driven away most of the players I’ve known over the years. It’s now super grindy with flashy, nonrealistic skins, toxic players, and super stale combat.

I could deal with everything else but Anet nerfs everything to the point where its like “I remember when I used to be strong, and other people were strong, and it was fun.” But now its like “Everything feels so weak now, its not fun anymore.” Not to mention that everyone has been using the exact same builds since HoT came out. There was 10x more build variety pre-hot but that was killed off.

If the combat became more engaging, I’d probably play again. If not, I’m not reinstalling.

I was a power ranger before it was cool.

People do not gear correctly for raids/dungeons/fractals.. much of the content has a desired meta and gear. Several mmo’s do not offer you this flexibility.

In GW2 any class can be anything. My ele can be a tank, and my guardian can be a healer.

There is a myriad of ways to play. ANET cannot control who you play with or if you find peopel that are trashy. GW2 is the epitome of MMO. playing with others is part of the design.

You probably want a solo player game. I wont name any titles but there are several.

You are right. This game has gotten more and more abusive and annoying (and yeah, meta events are teh suk). It seems all successful games end up going on a power trip and ruining the gameplay experience for many of their players. That stuff started back with EQ1.

Since my wife and I do not use online interactions for the purpose of making “friends”, we look at the game purely for its entertainment value, which is sorely lacking. The lack of imagination and growth is also rather stunning over the past few years.

I am just happy that developing games is getting such a boost from technology, so there’s more out there all the time. I will be happy to delete this one from my hard drive, I can tell you – the constant money-grubbing, hamfistedness, laziness, and contempt for the players is just too annoying.

imho the stark lack of armours since release is a major part of what makes the game stale,
we all look like we did 4 years ago for the most part…
we’ve had a couple of new sets but generally once you’d got your character looking as good as you think they could 4 years ago…they stayed the same.

i hope the crystal desert Xpac comes with LOTS of armours, a plethora of skimpy, sexy and bulky, protective armours!

give us a reason to go around collecting them!

Yes, the rigidity of control over players and gear destroys much of the potential fun, the “no farming for joo!” policy carried to brutal extremes, and the slavish dedication to some myopic dev “vision” of how to play, and how classes shouldnt be able to specialize, etc really squashes much of the fantasy/roleplay immersion. I liked the random item generator in DAOC for instance, great idea and implementation with that one. For character/class skills and magic, I still thing EQ1 was best overall – tremendous amount of imagination and versatility with powers there.

What happened is that ANet got lost….right aftger game release, and they bet on the wrong things where now they cant compensate and tweak it.

It has been more a bandage aid that will need more bandage aids over time.

1st April joke, when gw2 receives a “balance” update.

Storywise HoT felt a bit rushed, but i’m really enjoying these new maps and the maps that came after HoT for the living story.
Shame is though, that when you finished a LS episode and all the achievs on particular map, there is really no intent whatsoever to return to those maps and it feels like a total waste making them in the first place.
HoT maps atleast have rewarding meta’s and some nifty rare skins from chests.
It makes me sad that all those new LS maps die out in 2-3 weeks.
Also GW2 is really lacking events, I find myself bored between LS episodes and I for one am craving the new expansion. (like really Arenanet!!!)
We lost some cool event like: Dragonbash, Queen’s Jubilee and The Festival of the Four Winds and we got nothing in return.
They don’t even have to be full blown events but more like GW1 had some other cool flavor events with seasonal drops and stuff: Talk like a pirate day, Easter, St Patrick’s day, wayfarers reverie and even the Anniversary was a real event.

Edit: it seems we get wintersday in july now though, it a step in the right direction.
