What's with the new loot chests?
Well, they are bugged. The idea was that players could spot better than trash loot on a first glance, instead of having to loot every single mob that sparkles just to check if anything good dropped.

I loot every mob any ways.
The system itself is buggy enough that it doesn’t may sense to put into play. As it is right now it is just like having another enemy to loot at your feet.
I willing to bet its the drops that are bugged, not the chest appearing, pretty much proving that something is wrong with either DR or loot tables, it could be items registering as incorrect quality or not looting due to bugs. In other words, everytime you see a steel or wooden chest, its not that the chest with porous bones and fur scraps shouldn’t be there, I think its that something that should be isn’t there.

This. I suspect that the entire loot drop system is bugged, and the new chest system makes it apparent. There is some problem in between when the drop is calculated and when it is placed in the player’s inventory. This same problem could be at the root of why veteran and champion mobs drop such crappy loot.
I believe that Anet said it’s because corpses would disappear too fast with loot still on them (possible player complaint).
Anet: Fixing problems with problems.
the most annoying thing with chest is they can spawn underground and if you missed the sparcles ull miss the chest too.
They are bugged. Like many other things in the game. When they fix them there is a better than average chance something else will be bugged because of the fix.
Don’t think they’re quite working as intended. I got a little chest after defeating a bunch of centaurs. The chest gave me a single hoof…that’s barely even vendor trash…
lunawisp was my peacebringer on City of Heroes – she lives on in memory as my gaming id.
when I can see chest (looks to me like mines), it can contain any sort of stuff. Sadly, rares I got never came from these chests.
problem with lots of effects, items and other shiny stuff covering DE area (Orr), it very hard to find any drop and eat my fight time.
So rather then these chests may be anything more visible and please let it be for at least 6 min, time to finish event and look for them.

From the Flame and Frost: Prelude patch notes:
In PvE, if a player is awarded loot by killing a creature and the loot is of uncommon rarity or higher, a chest will appear that contains the loot that would previously have been on the corpse. If the rarity of the loot on the creature is lower than uncommon, the loot will remain on the creature’s corpse.
The chests are meant to contain loot above a certain quality, but they are just as random as any other enemy’s drops.
I have seen the loot “shimmer” on the ground where a corpse was, but there is not corpse. So ArenaNet had a system already in place to keep loot around even after the corpse went away.
Ya know what fix I want…
Just put all loot in my bags when the mob dies. I’m going to pick it all up anyway. This would make WvW much better as it can be extremely tricky to grab the bags when scrambling for your life. In PvE, it becomes a matter of noticing that you have loot to pick up or not.
But here’s my body – So rez me maybe?

I agree with your WvW comment. That would be very nice.

Yes me too i had a white Chain mail gloves from one…
They 99% give me green loot and since they were created i’ve had two rares, neither from brown boxes…straight off the bodies.
Somethings not working as intended.
This system makes no sense, and is not easier to see.
I have a feeling they implemented the chest to secretly test loot drops, but thats just me speculating.
Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I think that they added the chests so that +% to gold food wouldn’t work upon looting the chests. Using Omnom’s used to be a semi-decent way to earn gold, particularly in the quicker dungeon runs (15-ish silver per boss in AC), which goes against their 100% Gem Store-based revenue design. Now that mobs drop a chest with gold in it, rather than drop gold themselves, this negates the increased boss gold you would have previously looted.
It’s my belief that ANet has a a predetermined maximum amount of money they feel that the players should be earning in the environment so that the players find the Gem Store looking more and more enticing. One of the instances that I base this theory on was the mass banning of players during the Xmas event who used no hacking/third party program/etc. and just mass-crafted/salvaged the Pristine Snowflakes to make a hefty gold profit.

Corpses despawn a lot faster than loot chests. There are events in Orr where you’re just not going to see stuff, before it goes away forever. The loot chests say behind when the corpses depawn. So after a five minute crazy Orr defense of an outpost, you can still get the “better” gear. That’s the theory anyway. Obviously they have to be working right for that to happen. lol
I have seen the shimmer on the ground after the corpse went away, so they had/have something in place that will keep loot there when the enemy’s model goes away. And from what I gather most every one just mashes F whenever they are able to loot, and don’t look for the chests.

They should colour coat those chests for the rarest item inside.
Blue for ‘Fine’, Green for ‘Masterwork, Gold for ’Rare’, Orange for ‘Exotic’.
Then people will start complaining about how soulbound tier-3 sigils shouldn’t count as exotic. XD
Lv80s: Guard, Thief, Necro. Renewed my Altaholic’s card on the HoT Hype-Train. Choo choo~
Now that I have reread the patch notes, what does it mean by “uncommon”? Last time I checked that was not a rarity level in the game.

I agree with this. Loot can stay on the corpses if my inventory is full, but other than that… is there any reason not to pick up loot? 10c is better than 0c in any case.
Unless “spotting loot” is part of the challenge…

Actually this brings up an interesting psychological factoid. When a person (any person in any situation) opens a container that person gets a positive feedback from their brain. This is a chemical reaction tied to a visual stimuli.
But I digress. I would have to agree that picking up loot (from a functional perspective) is not needed, but it still serves a purpose.

THIS is where all the precursors are – burried beneath an ever fading pile of corpses in +MF-zerg-grind piles of never collected loot. The RNG is fine, it was all due to taking too long tagging and not enough looting!
It may just be that your original statement was wrong.
Please try again.
