A:

Your homeworld is where the world that you can WvW for and get the bonus from WvW. You can choose only one. If you wish to transfer, you have to pay the transfer fee in gems. You can still “guest” to another server to play PvE content though, but you can’t WvW for them. Says I choose Blackgate as my homeworld, I can guest and do event on Jade Quarry but I can’t enter WvW on Jade Quarry’s side.

As for what you should pick, it depends on your taste. If you’re into WvW, you might want to choose server that performs well in WvW. I’ll let others answer this question.

WvW is a game mode with multiple battlegrounds, and three servers fight in massive scales to capture supply camps, towers, keeps, and other tracts of land. It is all scored up at the end of the season and you get a reward for winning whatever place your server came in.

WvW (World vs World) is a game mode where you will fight against 2 other servers. It’s kind of like open world PvP.

WvW is the massive week long battle that lasts a week between 3 servers. Here’s the current scores and standings.

(note that current scores may not indicate how well a server does in other matches, it’s mixed up quite frequently)

WvW is where you can go if you want to fight in a war against 2 other servers. So it’s PvP, but on a massive scale where zergs of 50-100 players exist and fight each other over control of map locations. It’s completely possible to do content here by yourself, but it’s best with at least a small team.

As for your world selection, best would be to select a server that your friends are already on. Different servers specialize in different things. Are you in NA or EU? Some NA servers that come to mind and can be categorized:
Blackgate and Jade Quarry are heavy in WvW (check out https://leaderboards.guildwars2.com/en/na/wvw for how all the servers are doing in WvW)
Tarnished Coast does a lot of PvE – their temples always seem to be open (Player vs. Environment = open world stuff, the main game)

If you have no desire to play WvW and no other preference, just join any server that has a high population. There is still PvP (smaller teams), which has nothing to do with servers.
you can always guest to another server, but this can get tedious and is usually not even needed. If you don’t like a server, switching is possible: either by paying a LOT of gems or by deleting every character then switching for free (I believe this is still the case… stuff in your bank will remain)
my biggest advice would be to be on the same server as your friends.

Tarnished Coast or Blackgate. All other servers besides those two are completely empty of all life and almost non-existent. I call it “severe population crisis” because that’s how bad a lot of the servers have gotten. Go big or go home.

You could join a server and if you don’t like it there’s always the “free” transfer option. Just put everything that you like to keep into your bank, delete your character and pick a other server. I highly recommend that if you’re new, because most of the servers are pretty empty pve and WwW wise or not populated at the times you’re playing. That gives you also the option to decide for yourself on which server you like to play in the future.

it looks like theres alot of servers with “very high” amount of players. Was thinking about just picking a lower one because i didnt want to suffocate but according to everyone alot is good so i guess any “very high” server will do

Choose Blackgate, you’ll thank me once u know more about Map Completion.

And from the way living story is being released, its all about zerging,if u go to a high or mid lvl population server, you must do the content on first few days of its release or else it will be hard because nobody will do it once they done their LS achievement.

I don’t know about lower population servers, but I believe Dragonbrand is still in the very high category, and it does get very crowded in big events. Usually even medium events like Fire Elemental will have 50+ players at it. However, if you picked a random waypoint and went there, you probably couldn’t see another player nearby. Everyone is doing their own thing and only really gather for significant things.
One interesting website you may want to check out: http://mosli.net/events/
it literally lists all the zones in the game and counts how many times events changed (went from active to inactive, for example) then tells you the top 3 servers. Effectively, it tells you the most active servers in that zone. If you want an active open-world server, you could try looking through there for servers that are in the top-3 often. “Last update:Mon Sep 16 22:52:21 UTC 2013” looks like the website creator isn’t so active anymore :P he posted source code… I have half a mind to re-create it and then list the servers by activity.

Yeah, the server status’s are lies. Choose one of the top three servers or you will regret it, trust me. Gate of Madness said “very high” all the time, yet I could never find a single person. I ended up deleting a lot of my level 80’s just so I could transfer to Tarnished Coast.

Ill agree with this. Dragonbrand had a lot of people running around. I might go back there…

Yak’s Bend was once an awesome PvE server but I have to agree – If it’s not NA prime time, I have a hard time getting the big events done on my server. I have been guesting to Blackgate and Tarnished Coast for boss events during off-peak hours since coming back to the game a couple of weeks ago.

Darkhaven is I would say a well balanced server of all contents: pve, wvw, spvp, etc. Our wvw community is really coming together. Feel free to join DH’s Facebook group to get a glimpse of what we are all about; Facebook.com/groups/guildwars2darkhaven (700> members). Cheers!
