What the heck happen to dye prices?
RIP City of Heroes
You can find unidentified dyes in the new maps now.
You can find unid dyes in the new maps? I thought it was just dye pigments.
ANet may give it to you.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it is a wide-scale misunderstanding.
Perhaps people in the dye markets misread/didn’t read the patch notes. Maybe they all incorrectly think that the new Scribe can craft dyes with the pigments so they are all trying to offload their dyes before the market gets flooded.
I do not see anything in the patch notes about unidentified dyes being lootable in the expansion zones. Still digging around to see if that is true.
- “Scribes use pigments to make inks for their creations. Pigments can be found on plant-harvesting nodes throughout Tyria and can be salvaged from dyes.”
If anything, the dye prices should be going up due to their being bought and salvaged for pigments.

Some maps have unid dyes as map rewards, but I doubt its dropping enough to crash the prices like that, not when many other things don’t appear to have blipped at all.
There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon
The heavy thorned bags (green item quality) can contain them. I found around 4-5 in them already.

Ah, I can’t find anything on a masterwork “Heavy Thorned Bag” around the net.
I’m guessing it is an account bound item given as a reward from events in the expansion zones and not a tradeable item as I can’t find it on the TP or on any TP website item lists.

most people are opening em. but i got mine from a monster kill when i got one on day 1
Halloween might be a factor too. Less buyers = cheaper prices
Everyone’s levelling up new toons, getting Insta 80’s with tomes and you get u identified dyes from them too.
I think it’s to do with all the new instant-80 revenents that have come in with the expansion. There was a survey, and 4978 respondents said they were maxing it from day one. The levelling rewards have added 9956 unid’ dyes to the market as a result.

This is the best explanation I’ve seen so far. Also, due to all the 80 revs, the rare benthic or whatever it is aquabreather for heavy has gone from 2-3 gold per to 24-30 gold per.
Supply happened.
It was just a short supply shock from various sources, insta80revs, story rewards in HoT, heavy thorned bags and also lots of BL chests opened after launch, which also drop uni dyes.
Many new players, or old ones that returned for HoT, might also bought the accound bundles in the gem store now, that got introduced during anniversary sales.
Right now I hear many complaints that pigment cant be deposited and its clogging peoples inventory. Pigment is dirt cheap on the tp because everybody wants to get rid of it and there isnt any demand for it yet because it takes a couple of days until the first guilds have the workshop up and running to train scribes.
From what i have seen for the upgrades of the various guild buildings etc, its a massive material sink and i expect crafting guild hall decorations to be the same. Once demand for those and pigment sets in, people will start salvaging fine dyes because its profitable and the dye market will recover.
I guess just leveling your scribe from 0-400 will use up a good chunk of pigments.
I bought plenty.
Bloin – Running around, tagging Keeps, getting whack on Scoobie Snacks.
Another possible factor:
The Bifrost was the primary reason people might have been hoarding dyes (I know I currently have over 100 saved up for the possibility of crafting it…)
However, with the new raven staff… I’m not sure I want the Bifrost anymore.
Yes, supply has been “released” onto these top priced non gem shop dyes. Both Celestial and Abyss have seen a relatively large increase in supply. I was just curious if it was dumping for clearing inventory or raising funds or a new supply opened up. Seems to be the later.
Thank you.

I think it’s all the insta-80s flooding the market and the shock of dropped prices are causing others to unload stashes. I don’t think the prices will remain that low for that long, so I think it’s a good time to buy a bunch and sit on them for a few months whiles the prices recover.
They’re also still 5 laurels from the laurel vendor, which makes me think ANet still plans to keep them fairly rare. GW2Spidy shows the volumes listed have gone up slightly since HoT (Likely due to all the insta-80s), but not substantially, again pointing to speculation being the driving factor in the cost here more than anything.
