A status symbol. Most WvW commanders I’ve talked to won’t bother to purchase a new color based on the fact they are being charged for a feature designed to help organize players in large groups, something this game has desperately needed since release.

The new colors will become a status symbol, and I fear players might even be mocked for purchasing them, much like the guy in town who revs his engine at the stop light in his super expensive car, or the guy who parks in the handicapped space in his brand new red Ferrari.

What are your thoughts?

My thoughts exactly.

If they wanted to give the feature a vanity touch, they would have created several different icons and make some fancy ones expensive.

But all colors and at least 5 shapes must be free once the badge is earned.

  • All colors must be free so people can quickly switch between them to organize.
  • There has to be at least 5 free shapes because not everyone can tell the colors aparts.
  • And it must be earned, not bought because what we need commanding is people that knows the content, then commands; not people that grinds a dungeon to get the badge, then clumsily commands without knowing what they are doing at all.
SUGGEST-A-TRON says:
PAY—ONCE—UNLOCKS—ARE—ALWAYS—BETTER.
No exceptions!

I’m not too stubborn, I can’t afford to spend 300 gold on the item. I don’t PvE and I don’t grind dungeons for gold. All I do is WvW and the most gold I’ve ever had was 356. I know I’m a minority but many of the commanders I’ve spoken to are in the same boat.

I would like to imagine I’m slowly saving enough to purchase my precursor, nearly a year and half later when many players already have one.

People are going to buy them anyway, even though they don’t prove anything as to how well they can command anything. This is the real reason why buying a commander tag doesn’t mean much.

Imagine if players could buy their titles. They are the same thing, except you have a blue icon above your name instead of below it, and didn’t have to earn it at all.

They’re not ok with being charged to help organize, but they were ok with being charged to help organize or they wouldn’t be commanders.

The commander tag is not a status symbol for the people who understand it. The pugmannders who are tagging on your Eternal Battlegrounds and trying to lead your server to victory in WvW, the servers and communities that regularly organize Wurm and Tequatl, the hardcore WvW guilds who lead 24hr paintrains, the solo commander who is explaining Drytop and trying to rally the map for a T6 run…all these people appreciate and understand the tag more than Anet ever will.

However, closed-minded PvEers and Anet seem to think it is a vanity item.

Sometimes it is though. There are even trolls that use the tag for trolling, and getting others to follow them when they aren’t doing anything. Many times i’ve seen commander tags when the person is just harvesting or doing regular heart tasks.

If Anet was serious about the tags, they would put some restrictions on using them, such as people getting kicked for being idle too long. One example, the commander must be in a squad, engaged in WvW events, or World Boss & Orr pre-events and meta-events. The tags could have some sort of penalty associated with it if it isn’t used properly, such as a 10 min. debuff until they can turn them on again.

Their whole concept doesn’t mean anything though, when anyone can buy it and there isn’t any consequence when using them. So yeah, it’s really a vanity item without any well thought-out process behind it.

Maybe the price increase is a tiny bit in answer to the ‘anyone can buy them’ dilemma. If those that truly use them don’t want to spend the Gold, maybe, at least, some of those that have no real use for them will be discouraged from purchasing them, as well.

That was my first thought. 100G used to be a major investment, but now anyone who plays a moderate amount can get 100G now adays. The high price was supposed to be an entry barrier to disuade players who weren’t serious about it, it’s likely the price hike is in direct response to inflation.

What about when my tag is on during guild events. Early every month, my guild gets together and does jumping puzzles for the monthly. There’s usually more than a couple of parties worth. Not everyone has been to every place. So we use the tags to organize that event.

It’s a perfectly legit use for a tag. Now if Anet came out with Guild Tags that only your guild could see on map, I’d have no problem with what you said.

In third,be honest a lot of us could afford that because there’s many ppl who run around with thousands of gold just look at the economy and I am sure Anet won’t introduce such a thing without a good reason.

Stop PvEing and play WvW for an entire week, at the end if the week tell me how much gold you make compared to your regular play style.

There are many people who command and WvW exclusively who don’t have 300 gold. I’ve never had more than 360 gold myself and all I do is WvW, I’ve not even done any of the new living story content.

Charging players for a tool designed to make organization easier is a joke too.

Well, that’s why I said ‘some’. If it’s a deterrent to some of those that truly want them, it will also be a deterrent to some of those that don’t.

It could be one of the reasons for the cost. Or it could only be for Gold-sink purposes. Or, more likely, a combination of reasons.

I don’t know about anyone else, but seeing a commander with a vanity tag will lead me to question why he did not just spend that gold on siege and food.

pretty sure people can differentiate between blue tags based on where they are on the map, so if the tags actually -do- have a paywall, all jokes aside, it could have a little backlash on the commander, especially if they dont have a truckload of siege or food to begin with.

A dorito is not something “for you”. It is to help people locate events or movements they would otherwise miss.

Nothing wrong with a legendary wielding commander. But a legendary is something “for them.”

A dorito is “hey, come rally at my position.” It has no use other than that. Spending 300g on that and then not using superior siege for time-critical flips will make me scratch my head.

Thank you,

Wow…

For 300g I think ill just stay blue and have people deal with it when I’m commanding.

Here I thought this feature was to make things easier on commanders and organizing players.. not burden them with a gold sink to even make use of the feature.

Totally defeats the purpose if 3 commanders that own the same color are commanding at the same time and are locked into the same color. Does nobody at Anet actually play the game or think things through?

Really what is the point of the feature if commanders cant switch colors easily to fit the current situation?
