^ well yes and no…. one needs to be INFUSED for that mind as it states. If you have two of the same item but neither of them are infused then your only allowed to wear one.

Accurate yep. Good way to redeem the situation if you accidentally get two of the same ring.

Question: What purpose does the Unique mechanic serve?

The 2 items have the same stats. What difference does it make if i equip two of the same items or one of each?

I am not disputing multiple items with same stats, their Infusion slot is different(Offensive/Defensive/Utility), but given that the best infusion gives 5 Power at best, having 2 Ascended items for a total of 5 additional Power(instead of 5 Vitality) is NOT game breaking compared to items like Plate of Truffle Steak(100 Power) or Sigil of Bloodlust(250 Power).

The Unique mechanic is only there to kitten off players by adding extra useless RNG for no reason. If you acquire another same Ascended item through random drop, you cannot equip both(specially bad when back then, obtaining Ascended Rings was completely random rather than using tokens). It is also there to kitten off players who did not see Unique on the item or did not know what the Unique mechanic was for.

So whoever at Arenanet who thought this mechanic was a good idea and implemented it, could you please enlighten us on the whole purpose of this stupid mechanic?

Makes sense to me that I could only have one when I saw this term on an item, after all the definition of unique in general is ‘one of a kind.’

It’s not like other games don’t do this exact same thing. Specific bag in WoW comes to mind. The ‘unique’ tag on that puppy even makes it so that you can’t even carry a spare on your person (as an item in another bag, to put in storage for another char for example).

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

I played fractals since two weeks after their release. Fractal pristine relics were always there to buy rings with as far as I remember. What are you talking about?

As a GW1 vet, what unique means to me in the first thought is just another equipment color.

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Unique_item
A unique item, also known simply as a “unique” or as a “green item” for its color in the inventory, is an item considered special and difficult to obtain.

I noticed the “unique” term when I first look at the rings but I thought it’s redundant description as there’s already “Ascended” there. I didn’t realise the actual meaning of that. Luckily, I noticed the “uniqueness” when I looked up more info on those rings before I (saved enough relics to) buy the rings.

Others may not be as lucky as me.

Fractals of the Mists was introduced as part of the Lost Shores release (November 16th, 2012).

This token was introduced in the 14 December 2012 update.

Either way, that doesnt answer anything about the purpose of the Unique mechanic.

Does it say IN-GAME that unique specifically means not being able to equip 2 of the same item? I’m not sure if it does.

It doesn’t to my knowledge. The reasoning? no idea minus RNG & x lore on the item. Though i guess they also want to change up what off infusion stat you carry on you.
