What to do in GW2?
I actually just wrote a topic on it, but for me, it’s just the adventures you can have! You can find things that aren’t marked on the map, and there’s a lot of it. If you don’t mind a semi long to long read (Including the article I linked) go and check it out, it may just give you a few ideas
I level up an alt a bit by doing the daily then switch to:
Lvl 80 events (Orr, Frostgorge etc).
Dungeons.
Fractals.
WvWvW.
sPvP.
Exploration.
Helping Guildies.
dayli and maybe monthly if i want it to be a extreme experience ^^
Log in and do your dailies. Maybe one of these days you will need those laurels.
It is whatever you want to do. Unlike other MMOs, there is nothing pushing you to do stuff. You don’t have that feeling that you have to log in or else you will be behind everyone if you are not grinding and farming everything. With GW2, you get to do whatever you want to do without feeling left behind or like you have to play it.
Right now currently, I am working on map exploration. Not for any particular reason, just want to get it done for personal accomplishment. On the side, while I wait for a chance to get Eternal Battlegrounds cleared, I am leveling a Necromancer (Wells and Marks are my new favorite thing). I go to gw2lfg.com and put myself up for AC Exp, and then head out and start doing events and leveling while I wait for dungeons.
It’s all a matter of what do you want to do? Like I said, other MMOs tell you what to do. They don’t give you options to really do what you want. It is basically do it this way, or be behind everyone else. GW2 lets you do whatever you want to do, when you want to do it. And if you feel that you need to break for a bit, go for it. You don’t have that forced feeling of paying a subscription fee that makes you feel like you have to log in to get your money’s worth. You can break for a bit and come back later to check out new content when it arrives.

Make some friends. This game is much better in a guild of like minded people. And I mean much better. Dungeon runs can be great fun (particularly if you don’t take them too seriously).
Everything is better with friends…dungeons, leveling, farming mats in Orr…it’s just a much better game with the right guild…like all MMOs.

Bolded is both good and bad. At level cap, mostly bad.

Correction. Bolded party is mostly good at level cap. At least in this game you can beat the stat grind. Any further achievement and/or legendary acquirement is entirely optional.
As such, the game invites you to do whatever you like most. And if you don’t like to play until the next patch, no one will run away from you like in other MMO games where missing two patches means you’re ten tiers behind.

I’ll agree it’s nice to never fall behind, but if there are no goals left for you to achieve other than purely cosmetic stuff with the exact same stats, why go the extra mile?
I guess it comes down to what you think is the lesser of two evils. A gear grind, or lack of content.

Ask that to all the people who got obby armor or GWAMM in GW1. Ask it the McTiggers, 5 accounts with obby armor and GWAMM each.

There’s plenty of content in this game, but you refuse to play it because you focus on the lack of gear grind. The game is chock full of content that adds more depth to Tyria than any other fantasy realm I’ve played in.
In Real Life I wear tailor fit shirts with custom embroidery. They look better, are far more expensive but overall do not give any tangible “stat” bonuses. Sure they’re a bit more comfortable. Sure I’m more noticeable at work. But the work I do is what counts and the shirt doesn’t change that one bit.
Some people like to drive a BMW or Mercedes, but again, those do not confer a real improvement since they’re still legally bound to the speed limit. Expensive stuff is a goal of its own right.
To most people, cosmetics are a far more effective push to play than any form of gear grind. And since cosmetics don’t degenerate with consecutive patches, they are a far more lasting goal to reach. I’d much rather farm a year for a legendary that sticks, than a week for a weapon that gets patched out next expansion.

I prefer having the whole game still being current content than being limited to the last raid or couple dungeons at the end of a tier with the rest of the game obsolete at end game.
You can work on solely cosmetic items if you wish, I’m building different gear sets for different builds, tweaking them with sidegrades to min/max their effectiveness.
OP, there is:
Dungeons (25 different dungeon paths)
Fractals (which level to infinity)
Dynamic Events (3000+ events in the game)
WvW (build an army or support your server)
PvP (6 maps, another one coming today)
Exploration (find all the hidden items/places/events)
Achievements & titles
Legendary weapons (will always be BIS, will never get replaced on the next tier of a treadmill)
Of course there is the standard alt leveling/craft leveling, mini-games, etc.
And Guild Missions are coming today.

There is more to do in this game than any other MMO I’ve ever played.

Having cosmetic stuff to go for isn’t lack of content. It’s a shame so many people think only stats are worth going for, because many of us, me and most of my guild, are perfectly happy going for the “perfect look” for our characters.
Yesterday, I got the sylvari tier 3 greatsword for my mesmer…it was one of the few skins that were right for her. I didn’t feel the need for better stats, but I did feel the need for a better skin.
Face it, stats are just stats. If you can do the content without them, what’s the difference if you have better ones? To do the content 3 seconds faster?
In other games, where content is gated by gear, sure it makes a difference. But here it doesn’t.

I get that. But some people like to have actual net increase in their character’s effectiveness.
Should I just read all this and concede that Guild Wars is for people that just care about the way their character looks?

Or for people who care about other stuff than “stat rewards” in general.
I myself, I am an explorer. I love finding new stuff, nooks and corners. (no, not “world completion”. Even at 100% world completion, you have not seen it all yet). And sure, I want my character to look pwetty, but at the end of my gaming session, I want to have seen at least one new thing.
But this game leaves room for me setting my own goal. I don’t want to be held by my hand and I don’t need it. And by getting rid of the gear treadmill obligation, I can set my own goals, instead of doing what the game tells me to do.
I liked my character to be as effective as possible in WvW and I like the fact that this game doesn’t make you grind our battlegrounds to do that.
I get that. But some people like to have actual net increase in their character’s effectiveness.
Yeah, the same people who find the game too easy. What’s the point ? To overpower easy mobs more ?

In this game, a character with full whites can outperform a character in full exotics, because player skill plays an important role in the game. I’d say he best “end-game” for people who want an actual increase in effectiveness is becoming a better player yourself. For example, do a dungeon path solo or with less than 5 people, or do it in record time. That way, you can have a challenge and something “more” to do, instead of doing what everyone else does, do it faster/better and prove your “effectiveness” through action, not through slightly better gear stats.
So no it’s not just about the way your character looks. It’s about being more efficient/better than others because you are a better/skilled player than others.
