It appears that there are much more than those we actually need to learn everything…
I was expecting that, as not everyone wanted to get world completion before learning his final trait, but I’ve learned everything with my alt with barely exploration, before reaching lvl 80, and my main is currently sitting on 213 unspent hero points!

Is there any use for the remaining hero points? or they’ll become another useless currency once you reach lvl 80?

…and don’t be toxic!

I believe they are used the same as Skill Points in crafting at mystic forge.

Ironically, one reason for the change was because of the surplus of points from scrolls, but they are converted 1:1 AFAIK and you get 3 for daily?

Kythan is thinking of Spirit Shards. If I understand it correctly, Hero Points will be used for masteries once the expansion comes out. They will be used to learn things like how to glide and increase the duration of gliding. Keep in mind that elite specializations will also cost hero points (as well as their associated skills).

Take the time now to get as many as you can for when the expansion hits.

Actually, they are limited in number per character, as you can no longer level beyond 80 and champion bags drop instead a special mystic forge currency.
They just sit there!

Please lose the tunnel vision. There will be more to come even after the expansion. There will be a use for them. If we have any left over and sitting around, it will likely be few.

Besides, I doubt ArenaNet will make it so that you must do world completion just to unlock all of the things you can get with hero points. They made the system so you did not feel like you had to get every single skill point/hero point. Remember, they’re catering mostly to casuals primarily.

No longer level beyond 80? Then what has my character been doing since the June 23rd patch? My level 80 guardian has an XP bar at the bottom of the screen still. Several times since the patch the bar has been filled up and my character went through the level up animation and voice that goes with it. Am I earning more hero points? I honestly didn’t think of checking that until now. Anyone else notice gaining any spirit shards or hero points when you ‘level up’ a level 80 character?

It was stated that we no longer get skill points when filling the XP bar on level 80 characters and I think they said we won’t get spirit shards this way either. So I’m a little confused on this one. o.O

From the looks of things we gain enough hero points just from leveling to unlock all of our skills and traits. Hero challenges (formally skill challenges) allow us to continue getting hero points which will be used for the elite specializations (no idea about masteries yet). Keep in mind that elite specializations and masteries will only be available to players who purchase the expansion.

There’s something charming about rangers.

OK, so I’m confused now. I see what mean about hero points just sitting there after you spent them. My main has a lot after I investing into all the training things and it doesn’t go up when I achieve a new lvl 80. I thought they were able to be used for the new mastery tracks with HoT, but after checking the wiki it says those take mastery points. Maybe when HoT is out Hero points become Mastery points or am I just making things more confusing.

The had way too many skill points and from what I understand they break them up into 3 other currencies: Spirit shards, Hero points, and Mastery Points??? I know you can use Hero points with the new elite specs in HoT, but I can’t imagine them taking an enormous amount for 1 trait line as compared to the existing lines?

No, Hero points are used to unlock utilities and specializations. Spirit shards are a currency. Used like old skill points at the forge vendor. Mastery points are not in the game yet and will be gained by using mastery point challenges/communes around the new zones. Once unlocked you can level up a mastery just by playing the game.

None of these are the same thing or should be treated as the same thing.

Leveling up + old skill challenges = Hero Points
“Leveling” at level 80 in HoT = Mastery Points

Spirit shards are used to buy stuff for the mystic forge
Hero points are used to buy skills and traits in specializations; the extra 213 hero points will be used to unlock Elite Specializations and their related skills
Mastery Points will be gained by gaining experience and “leveling up” in HoT

So HoT will introduce it’s own currency…
That doesn’t change the fact that we’ll have unused and useless hero points left, unless the Elite specialization costs exactly 212 hero points. (not counting the krait obelisk in the home instance)

How about having a mechanic unlocked once you learn everything, where every extra hero point you have after that will count for your character’s Karma/gold/magic find.
And if something new get added into the game, you’ll have to learn it before getting that bonus again.
Of course that bonus will have to count the percentage of the additional HP you have, so you won’t have people moaning if some new skill reduces their bonus.

…and don’t be toxic!

As others have said a couple of times in this thread, HP will be used later. You might need 80-100 just to fully unlock one Elite with attached skills. Then they introduce a second Elite spec for your profession, and you need the points for that.

They aren’t “doing nothing,” they aren’t “useless,” they’re banked in advance of future need so you don’t have to go scrounge them up on short notice.

You will never (under current design) get more for post-80 “leveling.” The XP post 80 will go to advancing your Mastery tracks and you will only get more HP for doing more challenges (or whatever they’re working on for the WvW crowd).

The information in this thread can’t be accurate.
Hero points were earned in the main core game and should remain spendable in the main core game.
There is no requirement that we get Hot.
Answers to this threads question should at least state what we can spend them on in the main core game.

Stuff saying that extra Hero Points are usable in Elite Specializations are the only thing that’s accurate.
There is no requirement that anybody get HoT.
You cannot spend extra Hero Points on anything except Elite Specializations, the first of which are being released with HoT. You cannot demand answers that do not reflect reality.

It seems odd to complain that you have too much of something that’s not using up any inventory space. Would you rather be one of the sub-80 players complaining in other threads that you got the wrong trait-lines preselected for you and you can’t play the traits you want because you don’t have the points to spend? (Note: many of those complaining do have the points, they just haven’t noticed that they can buy a different trait line with accumulated points and swap to it).

Might want to consider what will happen to the stuff you earn in Hot that will only be spendable in the next expansion, which you may not want to pay for.
As for accuracy, there’s only speculation here. Nothing is fixed or permanent. Most who’ve played this game for awhile recognize that.

Well since Elite Specs might also be available with later expansions or even a regular update in the future, who knows if hero points will be used in the core game. I’m merely stating what we know.
They’re building the game to function as a whole, so it would be silly to think they wouldn’t take HoT or any future expansions into consideration. I’m not a huge fan of all of this doom and gloom.
I’ve played GW1 since 2005 and GW2 since the BWEs and I have no reason not to believe what Anet tells us tbh.

Hmm…I did pay attention. When my XP bar was almost filled on a level 80 character I checked the amount of hero points I had before and after ‘leveling up’. There was no change. It seems that we still go through the level up process and animation post level 80 but it doesn’t do anything or give us any kind of points.

I forgot to check my spirit shard count, but to my understanding for level 80 characters the only way to get them is as random loot drops from enemies, daily rewards, tomes of knowledge, etc., and not automatically granted once we fill our XP bar. And also to my understanding we were suppose to stop leveling once we reached level 80. Anything else that comes after that, like masteries and elite specializations, have to be obtained in a new way.

This is incorrect.

The Mastery System is completely separate and has nothing to do with Hero Points. You select a Mastery to level such as Gliding. Then all experience you earn goes towards leveling that mastery. Once you level the selected Mastery by earning enough experience through kills and events, then you spend a Mastery Point to unlock the Mastery Skill. You earn Mastery Points by completing challenges, exploring certain areas, or completing a specific task. Hero Points have absolutely nothing to do with the mastery system.

Here you go: a list of everything I have seen Anet mention about Hero Points and Spirit Shards!

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Skill-points-and-Spirit-Shards/first
A quick update on this one → After feedback from presenting the original hero point count – we decided getting to level 80 will give you enough hero points to unlock all the core skills and traits entirely. Doing hero challenges (aka skill challenges) will simply allow you to earn all the skills/traits earlier before level 80. With the release of HoT, there will be options to spend the excess hero points earned from doing hero challenges in the world.
There are a number of other changes on 6/23 to make the experience from 1-80 more exciting, better-paced, rewarding, and fun as well after having the time to evaluate and player feedback from the updates last year.
-CJ

From the News section of guildwars2.com:

Hero points and Spirit Shards
Hero points and spirit shards represent an updated version of the previous skill point system. Hero points are used to unlock traits and skills. Spirit shards are used to purchase vendor items and used with the Mystic Forge. When you log in for the first time, you’ll notice that your character has a quantity of Hero points converted from the previous system. Your character’s Hero points are visible in the Training tab of the Hero panel. You’ll also notice that your character has a number of spirit shards converted from the previous system. Your spirit shards are visible in your character’s wallet. The Wallet button is located in the bottom-left corner of your Inventory panel.
Moving forward, you may earn Hero points by leveling up and completing hero challenges (previously skill challenges). You’ll be able to earn spirit shards through daily achievements, champion loot bags, PvP reward tracks, birthday gifts, and, once you hit level 80, from tomes of knowledge and regular drops from creatures.

Skill Point Conversion
Banked skill points on all characters are being converted to the new currency, spirit shards.
All of the following repeatable sources of skill points will now give spirit shards:
Champion Loot Bags
Daily Achievements
Story Rewards
Players will no longer be able to level a character after 80, but level 80 characters will be able to loot spirit shards from creatures in the world.
Tomes of Knowledge will level a character up to 80, but after 80, they will grant a spirit shard.
Writs of Experience can no longer be used at level 80. 20 writs can be traded to Miyani for a Tome of Knowledge.
