As a lot of you probably know the idea for GW2 came about when Anet were working on another expansion for GW1 and realised they wanted to do a lot of things that wouldn’t be possible in that game. So they started working on GW2 and made Eye of the North to link the two together (mainly lore-wise and with the HoM).

Does anyone know what those original ideas were? I can think of a lot of things in GW2 that probably couldn’t be done in GW1, like dynamic events, removal of the trinity, downlevelling, and there might well be more that didn’t make it, but I’ve never seen anything where they said specifically what ideas inspired the game.

Does anyone know? Any Anet employees taking a break from the seasonal mayhem (game related or otherwise) fancy explaining it?

Not sure if you already know this information, but the cancelled expansion was called Guild Wars Utopia and much of the idea has been adapted into Eye of the North. There’s some information about it on the GW wiki.

Interesting reading. Like the idea of an Aztec setting and the Chronomancer prof sounds intriguing.

Nice find

That article is actually what made me start wondering. Other than a simplified tutorial and rumors of mounts based on odd bits of concept art all it says is “exciting new features”. It doesn’t say anything about what these features actually were, and as far as I know it’s not covered anywhere else either.
