They said they will be transfered, but they also said there would never be an expansion, and that the game would remain “alt-friendly”, but with HoT you will have to grind with every char you have, so who knows…..

The current skill points we have will become the new mystic forge currency, which will remain in the wallet, and all your ‘extra’ skill points from across your account now become one ‘pool’ (like karma did).

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Hero points will be coming through either as a level up reward or Skillpoint Challenges. Any other skilpoints you have aquired will be converted to a currency to purchase crafting materials to use in the Mystic Forge.

In other words: If you levelled your alt through map completion and did Skillpoint Challenges through the PvE maps, you’ll probably not lose as many.

If you did a quick fix speed levelling by EotM or Champ Trains, and gained skill points to buy skills through eating Scrolls of Knowledge, those Skillpoints will be converted into crafting materials.

They will easily be able to tell which is which by looking at your current level (So if you’re level 80 you get ~400 Hero Points) plus adding how many Skillpoint Challenges in PvE you’ve completed.

They’ve also said if you’re 80 you’ll be able to get most of the skills & traits anyway, so speed levellers won’t be too badly disadvantaged. But I still recommend to anyone get as much PvE map completion done, with as many characters as you can ready for HoT.

They won’t be converted to Crafting Materials, but to a currency that can purchase Mystic Forge crafting materials.

You won’t log on and find your inventory or bank full of new crafting materials. The currency will be added to your Wallet.

Good luck.

Except masteries are unlocked per account, not individually. And we’ve always since launch had to unlock skills and traits on each character.

Trying to remain positive here but will the Mystic Forge crafting materials just be a pile of the Stones, or something else that is tied to RNG, or will they actually give something back if used?

Right now I’m really tempted to burn as many skill points as possible crafting Clovers. At least that way I’ll get some T6 mats when RNG slaps me.

As far as I can make it out, the 2 functions of skills points are being split apart. Currently skill points are used to 1) buy skills and traits and 2) buy items from Miyani.

So (again my understanding of it) after the update all skill points gained from leveling and the number of skill points previously used to buy traits and skills are refunded. Traits and skill points will have to be bought again. You will get a set number of Hero points for being level 80 and a Hero point for each skill challenge that char has done. Those Hero points will be used to re-buy your skills and traits.

Each char’s skill points in excess of Hero points will be turned into an account wide currency that will be used to buy items, such as the items Miyani sells. Skill point scrolls in inventory will turn into “djiningots” (possible name suggested by the Devs). Clicking on them converts them into the account wide currency. These will still drop from champion bags and PvP, but possibly at a reduced rate since they won’t be used to buy skills or traits.

Flesh Wound, do you know if the re-unlock will also include a gold cost and if so will I also be refunded the gold I initially paid?

From my understanding of the system, all of our skills and traits will need to be re-unlocked. However, if you’re a level 80 and have 0 skill challenges done, you’re still going to have roughly 400 hero points to spend on skills and traits, out of the 465 necessary for a full core unlock. So you’ll be able to unlock the vast majority of your core skills/traits (all but like 13 skills/traits, if they remain 5 pnts a piece and if the number of points hasn’t changed).

There is no gold cost to the new system that we are aware of. Conversely it’s unlikely we will get the gold we spent back, if we purchased our traits instead of unlocking them via whatever their associated task was.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

You will have no skills or traits unlocked post patch. You will need to re-buy them with the Hero points you’ve earned from leveling to 80 and doing skill points. They said a char with no skill points will have enough Hero points to buy the skills and traits for several builds.

They haven’t said anything about refunding gold spent to buy traits.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/specializations-part-two-reward-tracks-and-elite-specializations/
A level 80 character that’s done none of the hero challenges should be able to unlock more than enough skills, specializations, and traits to make several unique full builds.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/ready-up-core-specializations-summary/
Most skill and trait unlocks will cost five Hero Points. While the numbers should not be considered final or absolute, Jon estimated that it will require roughly 465 Hero Points to unlock every trait and skill available to a character. The process of leveling to 80 will award about 400 Hero Points, so players will only need to complete a fraction of the available hero challenges to have enough points to unlock everything. The system is designed to give players access to skills and traits much faster than in the current system, with the number of Hero Points gained from leveling set to increase at higher levels. Excess Hero Points beyond the number required for unlocks will be converted into a currency, which will be stored in the account-wide wallet. More information on the currency will come at a later date, so keep an eye out!”

What will happen when the new HoT changes arrive? Will we get all of our 6-0 skills unlearnt? What if I want to unlock my skills with scrolls of knowledge? Can I do it, or is it a waste of scrolls/spirit shards?

I’m not sure if I want spirit shards! Explain how this will affect the skill aquisition, please.

I’ll do my best.

They’ve not said it, but it’s safe to assume that everyone’s skills (and traits) will be reset when the changes hit. It’s the only way to do it without potentially breaking some things.

You’ll earn “Hero Points” as you level up and as you take on the skill point challenges (soon to be renamed). When the change hits, each character will be set to the correct amount of Hero Points based on those two things, and any excess skill points they have will be turned into spirit shards.

There will be “tracks” that you can spend hero points in to unlock trait lines and skill lines. Warriors, for example, will have banners and shouts as two of their skill lines. As you spend hero points in a line, you unlock the skills in it, starting with the weaker ones (the ones that cost one skill point now) and going up to the elite skill for that line. All class skills that do not seem to be part of a line are getting a slight adjustment and put into a line.

Trait lines will unlock in a similar way.

As I understand it:

We will have a full trait and skill reset. We will re-purchase traits and skills (which will be changed and shuffled around, there won’t be any direct analogs to the current setup) using Hero Points.

We will have Hero Points from leveling (around 400 points by the time we are 80) and from completed Hero Challenges (currently called Skill Challenges, the blue chevrons on the maps). Each alt must do its own challenges. 65 challenges out of the 189+ currently available should be enough to fully unlock all traits and skills.

Once Elite Specs come with HoT, we will need more challenges done to open the Elite line. How many is unknown. I have guesstimated 35 and made sure all my alts have 100 challenges unlocked. That will either be enough or I’ll have to do a pickup run to get more.

Right now you will be wasting your scrolls if you unlock anything because it’s all about to change as described above. After the change, any skill points you have beyond leveling to 80 and doing skill challenges, and any scrolls, will turn into spirit shards and be in your wallet.

- 189+ is because 189 is how many show on your world completion chart, but the ones in Dry Top, Silverwastes, and WvW do not count towards the 189 yet should still apply to your completed challenges for purposes of Hero Points.

As a side note: If you have a character that has skill points from leveling/skill challenges just sitting there, spend them on any MF crafting supplies you want before the update. You’ll get those points back during the reset, but should keep the items.

Skills and traits are grandfathered in right? This will actually benefit players that are level 80 and don’t have all their traits and skills unlocked right? When they’re transferred to the new system they’ll have L80 hero points that will equate to more unlocked than what they had before the change. And won’t affect the players that have already unlocked nearly everything.

Spending you skill points on items now or after won’t really matter since the currency change will be a near 1:1 or the cost of items would shift to make it 1:1.

What will happen to my skill points

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Donari.5237

They aren’t directly grandfathered. If you unlocked traits in the current system by doing world events or by spending gold and skill points, they won’t be unlocked in the new system just because you have them already. There is no one-to-one conversion of traits. In the old revamp, the traits remained the same, it was only acquisition methods that changed, so they could grandfather us. Now, there is a qualitatively different setup all around.

So yes there will be benefit to those who haven’t already done all the unlocks, as they’ll have access to more than before just by virtue of being 80 (bonus if they’ve done skill challenges). There may be detriment to those who have not completed 65 skill challenges but have unlocked skills by other means; the challenges will have to be done to get a full unlock of the core traits and skills even if you already have a full unlock now.

Only way it will make a dif is if you have few like 3 utility 1 elite unlocked only.

Then ran around got all the skill point challenges and converted to materials that way you will get materials and those skill challenge points/skillpoints for leveling to 80 converted to hero points when the change hits.

Most likely:

You will have 300 spirit shards for your 300 unspent skill points.

You will have 400 (if you are level 80) hero points plus one for each completed skill challenge. If you have fewer than 65 skill challenges completed you will not be able to unlock 100% of skills and traits, but almost certainly everything you plan on using.

Curious if skills you have already unlocked… Stay unlocked after the trait patch?
Mainly I am asking for my many alts that are not at level 80. I have unlocked certain skills and not others.
I am getting hints that the new system will unlock skills as a progressive tree. So will I loose skills I have already unlocked?

Last time there was a change to traits. I had taken a level 40 toon to a trainer and bought the training manual only to find out after the patch that I had wasted my money. All the traits were reset on my alt to unlock after doing a particular thing in game.

Thoughts?

They haven’t actually said definitely if they will grandfather in existing characters and/or refund coin or skillpoints to characters that spent to unlock traits using the current system.

Linken is most probably correct: every character will be reset, assigned Hero Points according to their level and completed skill challenges, which will enable them to unlock without having to spend any additional effort.

So, I read the news about Updating Your Wallet (https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/updating-your-wallet/)
I don’t so much have a question as I have a concern you should address when you make the change to skill points and spirit shards:
1) if unlimited skill point sources give spirit shards, then if you spend the limited skill points on things like philosopher’s stones, are you sol in terms of buying slot skills?
2) if your current level 80 has 150 skill points when this update goes live, will you have to level up another 200 levels to be able to buy a bloodstone shard? I assume you’ll be able to spend those 150 on things like philosopher’s stones, but you’ll be unable to get more, so you would need to get 200 spirit shards before being able to buy a bloodstone shard.

to fix both of these, I might recommend discontinuing Miyani from accepting skill points entirely, so skill points are only for slot skills, then give her a temporary assistant (like 1-3 months, and have that assistant say when they will be leaving) that will convert existing skill points into spirit shards if you choose.

I think you’ve missed some things. Skill points will no longer be used to purchase skills moving forward. Hero skill points will be used to purchase both skills and traits. There are a fixed number of hero skill points, that you get from a combination of leveling and hero point challenges (formerly skill point challenges).

You will no longer be able to use skill points to purchase skills. It’ll be a different currency.

Skill points you have now will become spirit shards. Leveling to 80 will give a total of 400 hero points. Each skill challenge will give one hero point. Hero points are used to unlock skills/traits. Spirit shards are a currency for Mystic Forge materials. They are two totally separate things.

maybe they are talking about skill points your characters already have? they never said those would be directly converted (how can they know you didn’t get them from leveling or want them for skills?), but that’s almost how it sounds.

So for Alts… it is a matter of getting them to 80 before (or even after) the patch and doing 65 of the 189 skill challenges to unlock everything (of the core skills or traits). Unless you want to purposely keep an Alt at a lower level to farm certain items. (I am looking at you Silver Doubloons)

I have read all the Press Releases and ANet blogs on this topic and the threads here and the wiki and so on and I still don’t really understand how it’s going to work.

On my oldest account (not this one) I have characters with 500+ unused skill points. I have not bought all the skills available for some of those characters because I cannot see the point of buying skills I have no intention of ever slotting and using.

When the conversion comes, will ALL of the unused Skill Points be converted to shards? Will the skills I haven’t taken remain untaken even though I had points banked that could have bought them? Assuming I have done all of the existing Skill Points (I probably haven’t since I have never bothered with global map completion but for argument’s sake) and cannot therefore go to the renamed “Hero” challenges to gain more, will those characters then be locked out of ever buying the skills they chose to ignore? You’d think that wouldn’t matter but any game update could see a change that would make one of those skills attractive in a way it previously wasn’t.

If there are going to be more Hero challenges added in the future then I would tend to leave my unspent points as they are and let them convert to shards, relying on picking up more points as needed. If Hero challenges are now effectively a legacy system, however, it would make sense to spend points I have banked before the change and fill out all existing skills.

I’d like to know more detail on exactly how it will work before the game changes around me because as it stands now I don’t feel it’s clear and I’m unwilling to make a decision based on guesswork.

From what I understand. The game will take all your skill points and all your unlocked skills and traits. It will then convert/award you Hero points according to your level and amount of unlocked skill challenges which you will use tgo unlock your skills/traits again. The remaining skill points will be converted into shards to be traded with Miani at the mystic toilet.

at the moment and wait for the changes, since i think everything will reset after that
and you need 465 of the new points to have all skills and traits.
400 you have if your 80, for the other 65 you need to do skill challanges, you look at
your map if you have 65 or more .. if not try to get at least 65.

There is no advantage to keeping scrolls saved up.

There is no advantage to using them either.

To make it simple, this is what anet’s stated is happening:

  • All traits are being reset to “fully locked”
  • All skills are being reset to “fully locked”
  • Each character earns 5 hero points per character level (80*5 at max level)
  • Each character earns 1 hero point per skill challenge in open world (maybe more, dont think it’s fixed number yet)
  • After level 80, characters either stop gaining experience (not being able to use tomes or writs is already stated) entirely, or they’re also introducing the basics of the mastery system, one of which replaces the current “leveling” beyond 80 and simply gives shards as a reward
  • Champ bags and other activities that would previously give skill scrolls now give shards instead
  • Miyani stops accepting skill points, and starts accepting shards, at a 1:1 rate
  • Shards are added to wallet as an account bound currency
  • Skills are now unlocked in groups by investing points into their line (the above examples of banners and shouts are correct as far as we know, same with other skill groups [consecrations, spirit weapons, traps, conjures, etc])
  • 465 hero points is the currently stated, and hopefully 100% accurate, number a player needs to achieve for a 100% unlock of traits and skills (hopefully it doesnt break and require us to be using a given trait line to have access to those skills)

I guess then it is a good idea for everyone to spend their skill points (they aquired through natural leveling) for their alts at Miyani before the patch. Just keep the amount of skill points on each character that they have unlocked at skill challenges. (Number can be found on your Map [m])
