I’m currently patching the game after a disc install and after reading over the forums I thought that I would get more feedback from the player base here that came before me. I’m TOTALLY new to Guild Wars 2 – I haven’t touched Guild Wars 1 in…well, years. I hated the click to move everywhere feature in GW1, which is one of the main reasons why I stopped playing it. I thought, though – that I would give GW2 a chance.

What are some of the things that you think I as a new player will really look forward to? (I enjoy challenges, PvE content, achievements, Role Play, great friends and lore most.)

What are some of the things that you think are a turn-off to most new players? There’s always a rainy cloud somewhere else in the world – even on a bright and sunny day in Chicago.

I’d like to hear from the players what they think is great about this game and why I should definitely play it. Looks like I’m going to be patching for several more hours. (Are there servers? If so, which server do you suggest?) Are you a guild recruiting looking for more people? Why should I join? Give me all of the feedback, all of the things!!

This post is inspiring me already….. not.

When GW1 first launched… click to move was the default. Maybe there was an option to turn it off that I was never made aware of but in order to move it required all mouse work. ASDWEQ didn’t work. (Or maybe it was changed later on in the game.) I can’t be sure. I quit after about 2 months.

Thanks for being so friendly though Joe. I would find a troll in the first 10 minutes of my time here. If anyone else has something constructive to say, please do.

I remember I used flag hero at some far off point, click on them, wait till they were a bit away and then space bar to follow in guild wars 1 although of course before heroes i clicked to move like everyone else.

Most wanted in game additions: Beastiary, readable books

WvWvW is great but not as a low level toon. I suggest waiting till you’re level 80 with full exotics and join a good WvWvW Guild. Some will say you don’t need to but I find it very difficult to be competitive early on unless you’re always surrounded by friendlies. But then you become a hindrance/danger to them if they need to resurrect you every 2 minutes. For me WvWvW is the best part of the game, its a shame there has been no update/improvement to it since launch…

lol @ Niea. — forums are always a turn off when the trolls rear their ugly heads. But until this download finishes (Curse you slow connection.) that’s all I’m left with to gather feedback.

Any self-respecting PvPer DID in fact use click-to-move.

First thing, look at your keybinds. The default ones are pretty awkward for most people, you may want to change them.

Learn how to dodge effectively. In this game, avoiding damage is as important as dealing it.

The Deposit to Collectibles option on your inventory/bag puts all mats in your bank. You will need to go to your bank to withdraw them, but when you craft it automatically uses them so no need to withdraw unless you want to sell.

You can list things on the Trading Post from anywhere in game, only need to go to a TP when you want to pick things up.

Grab some gathering tools as soon as possible, just about anything you do in game gives you xp.

Think of Renown Hearts like breadcrumb quests, they lead you into an area but the dynamic events are the real meat of the game. Those npcs waving their arms and asking you for help aren’t there for flavor!

Don’t be shy about asking in mapchat for help or if you have a question. The ingame community is really friendly

Explore – there are hidden areas all over the place, behind waterfalls or bushes you can sometimes find jumping puzzles and even entire zones!

Take everything you know about previous MMOs and throw it out the window – this game is different, this game is FUN!

hehe the first thing I did in gw1 was to turn on the wsad movement xD Was a bit clunky though. Game wasn’t really designed for it.

The best hint is don’t read the forums, try and get into a guild of fun people and just have fun playing and discovering. Forums for all games are a depressing place.

Well, let me throw in my two cents (I’m typing this without having seen what the other person’s decent post is, so I might say a few things that are repetitive)

I haven’t touched Guild Wars 1 in…well, years. I hated the click to move everywhere feature in GW1, which is one of the main reasons why I stopped playing it

Good news, no more click to move! It’s all direct active combat. Including dodging

What are some of the things that you think I as a new player will really look forward to? (I enjoy challenges, PvE content, achievements, Role Play, great friends and lore most.)

Forewarning-This might be a bit jumbled but my thoughts are here to say the least :p

I believe Tarnished Coast is the unofficial RP server to address the RP. The lore itself is pretty fascinating (I enjoyed the books as well). The Dungeons are pretty entertaining, and are slowly being properly balanced. The classes are all enjoyable and have a different feel. No trinity. There are plenty of achievements to pursue with more on the way. You can multi-guild which is nice. [For instance, I’m in 4 guilds;
1- I originally joined for a community entering the game
2- The guild runs guild buffs often that directly help me (I typically rep this one)
3- A guild for fractal 40+ players which is nice for grouping
4- My own guild I use for a Guild Bank]
The personal story is adequate, it kind of falls short to the end. I won’t ruin the end, but often people feel let down. The community is pretty good as well.

Also, I advise you to consider binding dodge to a key and disabling double-tap to dodge in the options. While you’re in the options, check em out, there’s some you might want to enable/disable that if you don’t look, you’ll never know (took me several weeks before I actually discovered some of the toggles just by looking, and they are pretty nice)

What are some of the things that you think are a turn-off to most new players?

No trinity (no defined roles), active combat (can be very mobile combat), can be a ton to take in at once, lack of a tutorial, understanding the trait and skill system

And like emikochan said, stay away from the forums for a while once you get into the game. There is a TON of negativity on the forums here as opposed to positives (my guess is the majority of happy people are in the game playing, I’m here when I can’t be playing haha). I’m not saying don’t come back, but until you get a full taste of the game for yourself, stay away.

-I’d agree with others saying there is a bit of negativity on the forums. Take it with “a grain of salt” as some people just like to complain—even when it is good =).

-Heart quest indicators on maps help indicate what are good levels for areas for better chances of survival as first learning the game. I often go where the heart quest levels are about 2 higher than the current character I’m playing when possible (like well designed challenges).

-Dynamic events are a way to quickly get into some action and frequently you will see others participating in the events as well. I have found most people are willing to run around areas and have small chats while doing so with new players. Most seem to be friendly.

-Personal story lines are okay and have a level associated with them, so you may not be able to play much of your storyline very far along before you encounter difficulties (i.e., lots of dying). You can invite others to help in your storyline.

-Downed condition is new mechanic
-Moving while fighting is more important with dodging being a big part of that
—————-
things not as nice
-few skills associated with particular weapons; fewer skills overall
-no tutorial; or at least nothing great to help newer players
-needing payment for traveling from one waypoint (rez pt) to another
-increased character level increases cost to travel between waypoints (e.g., may cost 16 cp to travel between 2 pts at level 10, but 64 cp at level 35 to travel those same pts).
-armor repairs (not bad really; better gear costs more to fix; no surprise really)

Great I wrote a long replay and then got a network error and lost it… So again…

First thing. The forums are full of trolls and complainers. If you scroll down the topics list you can see for yourself. They hang out here because its easy to click the ignore tab in game and not have to deal with them. I am at work so I’m on the forums trying to be helpful, at home I’m playing the game.

Since you played for 2 months you know a bit about the world. Humans …charr.. and the other races.

The advice depends on how you play and what you want to get out of the game. I have been in gw2 since first beta weekend. And gw1 for 7 years. I am an alt-aholic. Finished my main and started leveling alts. So somehints of what to expect.

To start:
Selecting a server. This is important now since you have to pay to transfer. You should check guild wars guru or wiki to see the “unofficial”/official language. Some server have large guilds focused on WvW while others focus on role-playing. According to the wiki. If you delete all of your characters you can change servers without having to pay the gem price. Since you are starting out you might want to look into that.

Character slots:
Check wiki for the overview of skills for each profession. The racial skills are nice but they don’t make a warrior from race. X so much better than a warrior from race Y. The character creation choices determine what your personal story will be like. Check the wiki for spoilers. Start the game

Personal story:
You will get to a point where you are not high enough/strong enough to do the personal story. They have a recommended level next to the story mission name. If you are too low it will be in red. It’s kind of a “flow breaker”. Hero quick run to the town and warn them about the attack. “hold on… I’m not high enough level for this part. Give me a week or two toalevel up and will go warn the town…” The personal stories merge around level 40 so if you start your story after you reach level 30 you can do the beginning parts smoothly. It’s easier to get a group to do the story if they can all get credit for it.

Crafting:
Cook and jeweler are a bit unique. Armor and weapons drop from mobs all the time and you can find them in chests, but food and accessories are rare. You can get them from the personal story rewards or buy them from the trading post or craft them. Green items are cheap and easy to get. So just use them until 80 when you can focus on looks and quality. If you get a rare at low level you will just out grow it…. But the skin might be cool so if you save it you can transfigure a max stat item to look like the low level rare. But that isn’t really done at beginner level. Just a heads up.

Spvp is good for short play sessions. You can get your PvP daily quickly.

WvW can take a long time. Depending on your server and time of day it can be chaos or somewhat organized.

Guilds can help you do some stuff and now they can do guild missions. Currently large guilds can unlock guild missions easily. Small guilds don’t/ can not easily gain the influence needed to unlock stuff. So small fish in a big pond, or a big fish in a small pond. Which isbettter?

Getting to level 80 is good because you can use all the max level gear. Unless you are farming for materials for crafting your level 80 might be hanging around lower level zones to do events. So its not really a race to 80. Unless you really want to do the low level zones downleveled but wearing max gear.

I think that is a general overview of the game. Traits and builds can be found on wiki or other sites. But spending gold on specific runes for under level 80 gear seems a waste. Get good at dodging, adjust your key bindings and have fun. Good luck.

Talk to every scout NPC you run come across. They are the ones with a telescope icon over their head, the icon also shows up on the map if you haven’t talked to that particular scout. They uncover hearts you haven’t ‘discovered’ yet. This avoids that problem of ‘okay I am ALMOST done with map completion for this map except I can’t find that last heart …".

Salvage everything that is Fine or lower if you plan on crafting.

DON’T buy the Adept Training Manual from the NPC trainer. Buy it from the Trading Post instead unless for some reason the supply completely disappears by the time you read this. It cost 10 silvers from the NPCs but people have been selling it for less than that on the Trading Post for months.

As for movement, GW1 did have the usual WASD for movement from launch so I don’t know what you are remembering. Check page 101 of the manual if you don’t believe me. However the click to move option is gone. Click to move was useful when you were planning to move a far distance but not fight anything.

It sounds like the OP and I have similar mentalities, and I loved exploring in this game. You’ll level up quickly that way, too, especially if you do heart quests along the way. The personal story can really drive you into new places, too.

If you don’t already belong to a guild, finding one you like will help you out a lot. Since the game often forces players to work together (espeically on dungeons), it can be easy to make friends at group events. That way you have someone to call on when a Champion of some sort is giving you trouble.
