Whatever happened to "When it's done"?
“This is a typical example of “Overhyping” a game. You expect more than Arenanet could offer you.”
Except that it is Anet who did the hyping and thus created expectations that it fell short of on release.
What would you prefer, having an open beta for several months so people can beta test the end-game content, just for it all to get wiped afterwards? Don’t be silly.
I would muuuuuch rather play a game that is still in the process of refinement than to beta test all the content in the game for a few months and then get it all wiped before release.
Pfft I know right who needs proper comprehensive beta testing when we can just have weekend only ones with a level cap that amount to little more then PR stunts amirite fellas?
There is no question to it, It simply wasn’t ready…. The question now is what is the fallout of releasing a game too soon? Generally it’s a sure death of a product. People get very upset with bugs and leave…. MMOs are given a bit more grace.
Why do people keep bringing up the “when it’s ready” comment? The game is out, whether it was “ready” in your eyes is irrelevant at this point.

The world would be such a nicer place if we forget things the moment its due date is up. All those international incidents causing millions of casualties, forgotten, just like that, because its all history right?

Uhhh what? As far as I know, millions of casualties have not been caused by this game. Not even one yet as far as anyone knows- lol?

Strawman, how nice. Stupid reasons to give every country but ours aid aside, the game would never be “ready” in some peoples eyes. Was the game rushed? Was it overhyped? Is there still a few million people who bought and enjoyed the game, and are much happier that it came out sooner than later?
The first two questions aren’t important at this stage of the game.

I am not entirely sure what you are alluding to but I hope you did not just compare genocide and famine to a few bugs hampering a video game.

On the other hand just name one MMO, one Game or even one pirece of software that
has been produced in the last 15 years taht didn´t have any bugs.
See? You can´tBecause GW2 has just “some bugs”. TOR was released in a much more finished state than it, so was Rift.
swtor? swtor??
the swtor that had the skill delay but that delay ALL your skills for half a second after you use them??
The swtor that had to take down the whole illum 2 months after release because of unsolvable performance issue which still exist today?
The swtor that gives people 25 fps with high end computer, fixed 3 months into the game, and was broken again in patch 1.4 a month ago?
The swtor that doesn’t have server transfer FIVE months after release?
The swtor that made people to pay 15 bucks a month sitting in the fleet on a dead server waiting for pvp queue to pop and a healer to show up for operation? and they made them wait for months because they can’t get the server transfer working??
god I can go on and on about Swtor.. I can’t believe people actually use that steaming pile of kitten as an example of how much better other mmos are compare to GW2…
on the side note, Swtor was released with non scaleable flashpoints that you won’t go back once you reach the cap. Combine this with the on rail style of gameplay, and they still got more game breaking bug than GW2.
do you know GW2’s server has less down time since it release than a week of Swtor’s server maintance? That’s right, you got more downtime a week in Swtor than 5 weeks of GW2 since release!
And we have people complaining how buggy GW2 is because of a couple of bugged event and skill points.
This game doesn’t even pass the basic fundamentals of calling something ‘ready’. Launch day, people couldn’t get pass the tutorial boss if they were in a party. Fast forward to now, some skills and traits don’t function AT ALL. For all we know, they might not even have scripted it.
When you are a big corporate company and you go on telling people you are ready, at least have a semblance of reaching that standard of being ‘ready’.
You’re asking why it is relevant. It is because that’s what was advertised. Granted, I’m not pursuing frivolous lawsuits on false advertising, I too, am a paying customer, and I can voice my dissatisfaction in terms of how it is falsely marketed to be a ‘ready’ product, however I please, like the OP.

I’m looking at it from this point of view:
- this game is the first MMO that actually puts the word Massive into play. It’s vast. Some things are so detailed, I wonder where they got the time. Other MMOs look like single player games compared to GW2
- Not a single MMO ever was finished at release date. Actually, Guild Wars 2 is without a doubt the most finished MMO to date on release. Did you guys even play WoW or Aion when they first released? It took more than a year for those games to reach the state where GW2 is in at the moment.
- Most content works for 99% of the playerbase. PVE is fully functional except for a few hardcore farmers. WvW is fully functional except for a few large guilds. Dungeons work just fine except for exploiters. All in all, this game is f’n polished considering it’s not even 2 months after release. I surely did not expect this much.
- Even then, GW2 more than delivered on the hype. I’m a fanboy, but even I did not expect such a good game.
- Of all features that work, overflow must be the most brilliant. I’ve had MMOs where I couldn’t even play for a solid month because I literally had to stand in queue for 4 hours, a bit unfair considering I work late.. Even if overflow was massively broken, it was still a giant leap compared to any other MMO.
- Lest we forget, this game does not have a monthly fee. It’s beyond my grasp how they even manage to make ends meet considering this game is already more vast than WoW ever was, but that’s their problem, not mine.
- Also a few less important things such as the TP and forums didn’t work because a.net knows what’s important: making the core game experience work. A.net more than delivered, and then some. The vocal minority doesn’t interest me, and I sincerely hope a.net knows how to ignore them.

I’d actually like evidence on any one class in WoW, during release, with over 100 bugs, including several skills/talents that had completely no effect. I am so completely ready to drop this argument if you can provide me evidence of such.

I’m impressed that there’s a class in this game that has so many features that it can also have over 100 bugs.

Well don’t be? Many bugs stem from the same feature.

Neither of those games took significant risks in changing the gameplay, though. It’s a lot easier to do something that has been done before than it is to innovate. There are reasons that no one else has made a dynamic world with scalable events before at least on the kind of scale that GW2 does it! And if it takes a bit of time to get it to work optimally, then its well worth it.
I disagree with the “GW2 is so different” stance. Yes, Anet took some things a little further but most of those things are either polish or great ideas that just had to moved forward, something a new code base can do much easier than an existing one. Dynamic Events aren’t all that different from what you find in Warhammer’s Public Quests and Rift’s Zone/Rift events. In fact, I’d say Rift’s Zone Events push the envelope much further than GW2’s.
Sure, I don’t have to talk to someone to accept a quest but that’s semantics. It’s a great idea that had been part of WoW in some shape before that (auto-events). Crafting is, imho, actually a step back with a shared bank/collectible’s space and discoveries having been part of UO for a while in the late 90s, early 2000s.
The fight/combat system is pretty special, yes, and can be considered a move forward from AOC’s bad system. Twitch based combat, as found in FPSRPGs, moderated down to MMORPGs is a great idea, no doubts here. But it it really “revolutionary” or just evolutionary?
All in all, there’s one thing Anet did not copy – and that’s a meaningful beta and meaningful pre-launch phase. Instead after only a few BWEs the game was launched. Other games, from Rift to WoW since BC, have learned that real betas help prevent the launched game from being one. And that is the one thing Anet did different.
Aren’t we talking about launch here?
wow launch was 20 years ago. What else do you want to compare the game too?
SWTOR? They made a game thats not capable of supporting multiple players in battle without massive computer breaking lag and stuttering. Thats all i’ve got, never touched an “mmo” prior to that game.
And im lucky because that single game nearly made me give up on video games entirely, I thought perhaps I was just growing out of them. I gave GW2 a shot because I heard about it on swtor website and I am so glad. So at least swtor gave me gw2
Some things are not completely fuctional, though they are being fixed- what else could you ask for really? A perfect world were everything is exactly what you want and say? Sounds like what some of you are asking for with your threads.
If it makes you feel better, WOW has 79 known bugs currently. That game has only been out 8 or 9 years.

Just because another game was unfinished, does not make GW2 a good finished product. A good unfinished product? I can agree to that. Btw, I didn’t make this topic, someone else did. There is nothing against forum rules about agreeing to negative feedback.

To OP:
Huh? No MMO is ever “done” until they close the doors or stop adding content.
The done you are talking about is ready for release when they feel it is ready. Like any all software there are bugs.
The content here is easily as comparable or better than any other MMO I have experienced, and I go back to the 90’s with UO. I have Beta tested and opened WoW, GW1, LOTRO, AoC. None were without bugs or faults and I don’t remember any having substantially more content.
Edit: Funny how a lot of these complaint threads get started and they just post and never show up again in their own thread.

Blueroseknight,
I love Trahearne. Thanks. xD I still like a Hero. That’s like saying a Soldier cannot be a Hero.
To Dimgl,
You obviously did not even read CelticWish’s post. xD
Scyte,
“You expect more than Arenanet could offer you.”
List of things that could have very easily been added before release:
-Proper “target closest enemy” function.
-Attack and defend map for PvP so people do not have to grind sPvP and WvWvW.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Abridged-Fort-Aspenwood/
-A better call-target system. They epically downgraded from Guild Wars 1.
-More emotes. That is simple enough. Again, epically downgraded from Guild Wars 1.
-Added a few more skills so that players do not get stuck being forced to use a specific weapon for a specific role:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Abridged-Improved-Combat-System/
-Added a costume feature to allow people to easily use costumes and promote more “Style” tab sales in the Trading Post:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Costumes/
-Have titles grant you effects like Guild Wars 1. Such as salvaging bonuses, etc.:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Abridged-Titles-and-their-Purpose/
- Although I have not designed games that have been released, (Due to lack of interest, and lack of money for cool software and servers) I have spent lots of time designing/modding existing games. I have written dynamic events long before Guild Wars. When Starsiege Tribes: RPG mod was released, I created so many “event,” you cannot even imagine. And I scripted the .CS files meticulously using Notepad. I even went and using Paint to make texture and create my own furniture to add to the game. I made weapon sounds, voice effects, etc. All of this was done a terrible computer with very little resources available to me.
Not having these features, is simply inexcusable on Anet’s part. Delay release for a simple 3 weeks, and you could have such a more enjoyable game. (A month or two for skills. -Properly checking balance takes time.)
The only thing that would have actually taken much time to add on to the game, would be to branch out all of the events in the game. Making them more dynamic, and more life-like. And this, although it does require lots of bug testing to make sure NPCs not glitch into the ground etc… requires little more than some creative storytelling.:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Abridged-Dynamic-Events/
- Guess what? Most of these I created in several hours after reviewing everything for 3 days or so. All together, I believe it has taken me a total of a month to go over all of these. And I did so while working several jobs, having a social life, and playing other games because I got bored of Guild Wars 2. I have even used basic editors to create maps to test the basic function of the maps. The combat obviously took much longer because it takes much more balance. But postponing launch even a week, could have meant so much more content that would have made the game SO much better. SO much less repetitive. SO much more enjoyable.
Not trying to hate on you. Just saying: Way more could have been done, very easily.
People who are talking about how good SWToR was make me sick.
They are the reason my once beloved game genre is becoming animated crappy comic book stories disguised as video games.
I’m going to make some recommendations to all MMO developers daring to to contemplate insulting us with their…their….STUFF :-
- Don’t bother giving us details, we’ll pick holes in them, even after we’ve tested it and enthused about it all over the net like giddy schoolgirls with Bieber fever for months on end. We’re allowed to be capricious; pushovers one moment, impossible to please the next cos that’s how we roll in the MMO fan business, like a rowing boat in a force 10 gale.
-Don’t tell us you’re ready to launch, we’ll test your game every beta weekend, badger you for release dates even when you tell us you’re not ready and then when you finally do release it, we’ll kick your butts for releasing too early and not being ready.
- Don’t release at all actually, just keep the game in perpetual beta. We have absolutely no tolerance for bugs, we cannot conceive that this enormous and complex thing you’ve made may spring the odd leak here and there. Who are you kidding anyway, world building….it’s ruined!
- Don’t bother having forums either. It’s like a red rag to a bull, a distillation of every woe, every conceivable little thing we can think of that DOESN’T WORK RIGHT. You were thinking it’d be a place for people to swap tips, discuss builds and mechanics, offer constructive suggestions? Think again pea brains. This is your house and we are not going to wipe our feet, we’re gonna take a dump on your shag pile rug and then comment in the guestbook that “this house stinks of s***!”
And we wonder why MMOs are rapidly degenerating into horribly staid, risk averse, generic, narrowly conceived, hand holding, dumbed down, short term, shallow experiences intended to make a fast buck off box sales before the whole thing inevitably melts away as soon as the “the next big THING!”? looms on the horizon.
