Whats all the talk about orr for?
Loot.
Well, relative to other areas I guess?
Also the whole storyline is about defeating Zhaitan (who is in Orr) and his army of Orrian undead. So from a lore/story perspective it’s pretty important.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
I like Orr, but don’t expect anything all that special. There are several temple events (like dragon events, but less visually epic and generally harder), a couple of semi-valuable “gatherables” (orichalcum & omnomberries) and the final dungeon (if you care for that sort of thing).
Nothing really that different to anywhere else, but it was where most made their profit – until the big events got their rewards boosted everywhere, anyway.
From a lore point of view:
The very short version, Orr was the land where the Gods resided while in Tyria long time ago, when they left Tyria humans took over but was mostly a holy place with lots of very beautiful cities and temples. When the Charr tried to invade it, a very powerful magic was released to try to repel them, but was too powerful so it not only destroyed the invading Charr, but also sunk Orr and all of its people into the Ocean.
Zaithan was sleeping under the continent of Orr, when he woke up (the third one to do it after Primordius and Jormag) he rose the entire continent again from the bottom of the ocean, with its entire past population turned into undead, its rising causes tidal waves and flooding which destroyed Lion’s Arch, which was rebuilt mainly by pirates when the waters receded (which is why it looks like it was mostly built from pieces of boats ).
So at the time of the game, Zaithan’s base of operations is in Orr, and that’s where the undead (risen) come from, and the goal of the personal story is to destroy him and cleanse Orr.
From a gamers point of view:
Orr is one of the highest level areas in the game (alongside with Frostgorge Sound), so it’s usually where the better loot drops and highest tier crafting materials drop, there are lots of events to do (no hearts there, only events), plus the temples (one for each of the human gods) are there with events to take control of them (they eventually fall into risen hands again after taking them), and those events reward a chest with a guaranteed rare on it, plus while they’re taken there’s a karma vendor at each one that sells exotic gear for about 43k karma a piece.
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.
