Seriously? you guys deleted my post about this earlier, so here is a ctrl v, i’ll put this on gw2guru as well if I need to. I’m just looking for a guesstimate or any info about this. So stop hushing us about this topic.

I bought this game last july when not many were playing and when Anet had stated in multiple announcements that they had a DX10 version of the game in the works and would be launched with the game on release day.

As we all know, this never happened and now it seems they have stayed very hush hush about it. So ANET is it cancelled? TBA 2012? Q1 2013? I think we would all like to know.

Also, more importantly. When in the world are they going to fix support w/ nvida cards?

I have two 560Ti OC in SLI and my performance in the game (especially wvw) is unacceptable. I overclocked my 3.3ghz quad core i5 to 4.0ghz quad core w/ 0 improvement. I also run the fastest possible 8gb DDR3 ram set and SSD hard drive.
I know for a fact that a team on nvidia engineers went to your facility a couple weeks back to help you guys fix this, what is the ETA on this as well? Again, 2012? Q1 2013?

I think we would all like to know, because in its current state this game is not possible to play at 60FPS in every situation (and thats not even on your ultra or high settings).

I never saw any announcements that they were going to have a DX10+ patch/version on release day. I saw announcements that said “after release”.

“I know for a fact that a team of nvidia engineers went to your facility a couple weeks pack to help you guys fix this?” Again, where are you getting your facts?

I run an nVidia card in my subpar rig and the game is both playable and looks nice. I don’t get 60fps but I don’t need to since the human brain processes about 24fps into fluid motion.

Massive diff between 30 vs 60 FPS and that’s just watching it.. You can totally feel how less smooth a game is below 60 FPS.

Personally i consider 30 FPS playable but 60 FPS is the sweet spot

This isn’t a presidential debate man

1.) The nvidia engineers, was info I found on the net backed by a site moderator on gw2guru and he posted that claim in a followup to a forum post there and backed his knowledge with a link to an ANET forum post.

2.) After release…… They changed their position on this less than a month to release, but back in the day they were supposed to land simultaneously. But how close are they to finishing? do you know?

3) Your nvidia card is 100% guaranteed to dip you into the 15-30fps range or worse during WvW fights that r semi large scale and events in cursed shore.

and to avoid any nerd rage about computer builds: Don’t care how fast your system is, or what is in it, you WILL be frame rate capped with an nvidia card. The game doesn’t use the second card (well it does but I calculated it to ~15% efficiency on the 2nd card, and always less than 70% on the first card lol).

The best possible outcome with an nvidia card for you ‘simianchaos’ is to have a powerhouse single video card upwards of $400+ and U might get 30fps in wvw, just maybe.

ATI users disregard my posts, you are set.

In a heavy WvW situation this is what my usage looks like, you tell me what the bottleneck is:
CPU Usage: 85%
GPU1Usage: 65%
GPU2Usage: 65% (turn off sli and see this go to 0% but no FPS decrease really)
Video Memory Used: 679mb (1gb total)
Memory Usage: 72%
SSD HDD Usage: can’t get a % here but come on its solid state.
—-clearly the bottleneck is the GAME CODE—-

And yes 45FPS is still a huge difference from 60FPS when your heavily engaged in combat, maybe its my eyes being super duper, or maybe it’s because monitors prefer native refresh rates like they do native resolutions???

But such is such, and the majority notices.

@ invizo.5408: thats not right, I run 40-50 FPS+ in WvW with nvidia :P.
Never had any problems even in the crowd battle with maxed out settings, guess it’s high end at work…

And for the CPU use, can be rather ticky, mostly it takes more performance to split the data package on several CPUs and put tham back together, than processing them in one core. That’s why most games only use it if necessary, or where it makes sense.

You ever go to dreaming bay with your own zerg of 40 and another zerg of 40 decides to help you out… Like I said the only possible way to have Nvidia and get your deserved 60fps is to buy a single monster powerhouse card which SHOULD be completely overkill for this game.

And i’m talking about a card that can run the most beautiful cutting edge games at 60fps

This is actually untrue, there is no solid number anyone can give for a limit or sweetspot for the human brain to integrate images from the eyes.

The 24fps myth comes from the fact that movies are often recorded to 24fps, but this is more to do with attempting to trick the brain into “filling in the gaps” and has nothing to do with the limitations on the eyes or brain. The average person can quite easily tell the difference between 15, 30, 60, 90 and even 120 frames per second

This is my spec:

i7 3770k OC to 4.5 ghz
SLI 670 GTX nvidia 4 gb ram oc
SSD 256 GB
32 GB 18 DDR3 1866

At the first 2-3 weeks, I was getting 120-160 FPS average on all max settings. As more patches release my FPS actually dropping to roughly 15-30 FPS ALL the time on any settings. In order for me to get better fps, I would have to refresh my screen all the time by turning on and off vertical sync every time I zone into a new area. Now I am running average of 60-80 fps. -.-

Loading screen actually take significantly more time too. It used to load instantly when I zone to a new area (when there was a huge zerg in lowbies areas), now it takes 5-10 seconds. It’s not my hardwares, i tested again with all other games with high settings and run many benchmark test, it performed like it should be.

If you think there’s no different between 30/60/120/160 fps then you are so dead wrong. The game is so much smoother when it average 100 fps. -.-;;

I dislike these “demand” threads.
They said it’s in the works, they never promised it as a release feature of anything.
You cannot demand an ETA on something that wasn’t said to be in.

I run a 3.4ghz quad OC 4.0 with 670GTX and I don’t recall going below 50 FPS in any situation including WvW.
Ever considered it might be an issue of yours? Try using the beta drivers.
I use the 3.6 I think, been getting smooth gameplay since them (it was somewhat choppy before).

I’ve tried every driver beta and release starting at the 300.xx drivers and the latest (the best by a slight margin). You are actually running an out of date driver if you are still using their beta driver.

The reason you get 50fps is because you have a borderline powerhouse single video card at close to $400. U deserve 120fps on a dx9 game like this. Your rig is bottlenecked as well as mine except I chose 2 x $250 cards.

You realize that your card can max the hell out of a game like Battlefield 3 in Ultra, 4xMSAA, and 1080P. – a game which requires a lot more out of your rig, but you can’t achieve a solid 60fps in GW2.

GW2 is heavily CPU bound we all get it.

However there are known performance improvements (regardless of pretty effects) when using the same game in DX11 mode with a card that supports it.

I have a stupid high end system and it sometimes struggles to maintain 60fps.

This can only help the game more then anything.

Just be patient Im sure its coming.

This thread should help it along.

Read the graphs I posted…and yes …steam users are a massive part of the PC gaming community.

DX10 was announced as a side comment years ago and never mentioned again. DX11 didn’t exist and 10 was just coming out. DX10 has now been skipped over.

DX11 was mentioned when they said they’ll look into if they should add it to the game.

If you want a guestimate, it probably won’t be looked into until around the first expansion, around a year from now. If they’re going to add it, it probably be sometime within the 1st and 3rd expansion, as part of one of them.

You bought the game…last july ? really ????

What? A lot of people bought (pre-purchased) the game last April. Some people even bought the game years before it was officially available.

U deserve 120fps on a dx9 game like this.

Why do you think that? You have old hardware, and this game runs a lot of complex pixel shaders and shadowing when the settings are cranked all the way up. New games target new hardware (or even a little beyond) for their high-end settings, not two-year old hardware.

Regardless, I’m running this at 2560×1600 (twice the number of pixels as 1080p), with all settings at max including AA, and getting a solid 60FPS with very few exceptions. This is with two HD6970s in crossfire @ stock clocks, so not exactly apples to apples, but the nvidia cards were more powerful in that generation anyway — a 6970 was nowhere near 2x as powerful as a 560. My wife’s system holds steady at 45-50 FPS @ 1920×1200 with one 560Ti 448 core card. There’s almost certainly something going on with your system that’s affecting your framerate, and it’s not DX9.

DirectX 9 was cool when it was new. DirectX 11 or don’t bother guys.

You realize that when you request a 9level3 device from DirectX, all those DX9 calls just get mapped to the DX11 equivalents by the driver, right? DX11 isn’t some magical pink unicorn FPS boon. It can speed up some stuff, but most of the complexity in this game is the shadows and pixel shaders, and it won’t help much with that unless the shader code is overly complex or poorly written (but from what I can tell it’s not).

There’s still new HW coming out today that doesn’t fully support DX11. It would be dumb for them to only target DX11 because they’d lose access to a huge pool of potential customers. The right thing to do is get the engine stable on DX9_3 and then patch in a few things later from DX11 that can have a big impact on the rendering quality/speed.

I have to say it is weird of all the games i run this one being the most demanding. I usually around 80fps but get big drops from time to time. Bf3 on ultra or even Crysis (which is dx9) dosn’t seem to lag as much. For reference I’m runnning a oc 3820 (4.3) and 680. In my mind i should never be lagging since that’s basically top pc you can get at the moment, well except sli of course.

JPSnow (main) – Necro, Sir Mezalot – Mesmer
Lieutenant Stabs – Thief
Night Vision (NV) – Blackgate

See, your solid FPS is because of your ATI cards. Your wife’s performance with a 448 core 560ti (mine is 300 something core) probably looks fine alone in the world. But put her in a 40+man WvW fight, you’ll see what I mean if you run fraps.

And what do i expect out of gfx card!? I Run shogun 2 with 10,000 units on the screen max settings and the works, it runs a solid 60 fps, my CPU, GPU, and RAM are all screaming at me between 85-100% usage for each component, but I still get a solid 60. Monitor your wife’s gfx card, cpu, and ram usage; and watch her fps tank in Lion’s Arch but use barely any of her gfx card.

Last night I monitored my gfx cards running at 22% while I achieved 20fps…. It doesn’t make sense.

Last night I monitored my gfx cards running at 22% while I achieved 20fps…. It doesn’t make sense.

This is why I think something is up with your system. Something is keeping your CPU from giving the GPU enough work to do. FWIW, I don’t see this problem on either of my computers, and aside from my crossfire setup they both have pretty average HW.

I’d try turning down the texture quality to medium and see if that fixes it. Could be that you don’t have enough video RAM to run at high, or that it’s paging from disk too much. Otherwise, if you can find one setting that seems to have the most impact on your frame rate, it will be a lot easier to track down the bottleneck.

It doesn’t use a chunk of Vram for processing from my expierence. Uses alot more Dram.

Anyway.
I’m running steady at 1920×1080
With everything maxed
I’ve disabled the ingame FXAA and enabled some different filters in Nvidia control panel, just because i find them less curvy and shraper that way.

Post processing makes the game look too bright, disabling the bloom effect made it look more vivid.
Bloom definitely loses it from HDR.

I’m running;
- AMD Athlon II x4 650 @ OC 3.1ghz – just a minor automated clock for 100 mhz.
- DDR3 1333mhz 4 GB
- Nvidia Geforce 630GT @ OC MemClock – 1020 / ShadClock – 1840 / GPUclock 920

Everything runs stable under heavy workload @ 40-45c

Thing didn’t cost alot, basically runs everything stable at 40 fps from WvW to Cities.
Never see a fps drop, so i don’t exactly know what’s dipping it for alot of people.

Besides that, a lot of effects and shaders work better under DX11

I still have no idea why GW2 didnt come out with both DX9 and 11 support.

New MMOS like elder scrolls online in 2013 will have both DX9 and DX11 support for perfomance increase in cards that support it as well as 64 bit client support and massive GPU and scaling. GW2 is far behind for being a “next gen” mmo.

They could have included both API’s and that still would have allowed eveyone to play.

DX9 is not dead…yet…its still very common especially Version C. Its there for older cards.
DX10 is dead cause it came out at a bad time right before 11 and 11 has better multi threading capabilities.

Look at games like the Witcher 2…kittening beautiful game and its DX9 and its ultra mode brings Extreme class processors and GPUs to their knees.

So try not to be so touchy there little feller its will all be ok…

DX10 is dead cause it came out at a bad time right before 11 and 11 has better multi threading capabilities.

Look at games like the Witcher 2…kittening beautiful game and its DX9 and its ultra mode brings Extreme class processors and GPUs to their knees.

So try not to be so touchy there little feller its will all be ok…

lol i’m sorry too I didn’t mean to attack i’m just used to people flaming me for this stuff… It’s really bad for me because the game simply feels like a beta when it comes to being optimized correctly, its not even playable sometimes and my buddies that have cheap $150 ati cards are having a blast.

and i agree with you on the dx10 thing, but they took too long to make this game, so they had to botch dx10 or so i heard.

I am hoping for a DX11 patch as well. DX9 is so ancient that there’s already been scrolls found in caves about it. Everything which DX9 can do, DX11 can do it faster and more efficiently hence why games with DX9 tend to be a lot more sluggish than if they were using DX11. Not to mention the help of DirectCompute and tesselation. Improved and new shader support. Not to mention that most people should have migrated from Windows XP already. And yes, I am actually talking from a developer perspective here.

I’m running on a 3rd gen DX11 nVidia card, GTX 670, with maximized settings and yes, you do notice it if frames goes below 60 fps. Moreover your input feels less laggy when you are at 50-60 fps at least.

tbh GW2 is not just the best looking MMO out there, it’s one of the best looking games, DX9 or DX11, it’s still beautiful.

Yes, undoubtedly so but that’s not part of the discussion here.

Speaking of which, why does the FPS dip so bad when I’m in Lions Arch and I turn the camera? I’m running i5 2550k, GTX 570 OC, 8 gig ram

ArenaNet does NOT play Guild Wars 2. This can’t be.

I doubt u get 60fps in lions arch standing still… i’m running almost the same exact rig as you except the 2 × 560TI OC.

The reason why has nothing to do with your computer, all of your components are probably capping around 60% usage, if even that. The game however will not take full advantage of your hardware and that is why you notice the dip. Especially when you move the camera because I believe at that point you are telling the game to load more textures into RAM.

Another perfect example Anet, of why your optimization update is way over due. No one really cares about these one time events you guys spend so much time on. We do care, however, for the longevity of the game.

i’ve already learned the hard way to use names of companies or employees of that company on these forums or link to posts made by those people so here goes

on gw2g in 2008 was the first last and only time they said dx10 would be in the game.

later on they said not at launch.

hte primary benefit of dx10 back in 2008 was the improved performance. ambient occlusion is incredibly subtle graphical effect, and easily faked in dx9. in fact swtor and rift both fake it in dx9 right now.

the primary offering for dx11 is not tesselation(which looks great but gives a rather large performance hit) but rather the multithreaded rendering which in gpu intensive appplications offers to boost performance by a rather large margin. for this reason it is very attractive, and in some games which utilize it well, it allows them to add more dx9 and prior eye candy while still giving fps gains as large as 20fps under the same presets under dx9 mode.

anyways dx11 is nice, but it’s not what people usually attribute to it. and dx10 is a waste of time for both players and devs. dx11 without tesselation looks identical to dx9 barring any added dx9 effects under dx11 mode for a game(such as wow).

Performance increase of using it (if your card supports it) is totally worth having it even if hey don’t add any other pretty effects. Thats what I’ve been preaching to about having it. Most games side by side DX9 and 11 show massive performance on the 11 side without having other effects added.
MMOs coming out most noticeably Elder Scrolls Online are already pushing its out of the box DX9 and DX11 full support especially for their massive World V World type battles in PVP.
Anet said they wanted everyone to be able to play the game that’s why they only did DX9…..that makes no sense….they could have had both Dx9 and Dx11 and still had the same amount of people..if not more. Just some more that would be happier with better performance of DX11.

This is complete false information. You have to play every other game before you can make this determination.

Currently, TERA is THE BEST LOOKING DX9 game on the planet. Hands down.

Also, you’ve never played it. Most of you would cry at it’s difficulty. I did.

dx11 wouldn’t help performance in gw2 though, because gw2 barely utilizes a low end gpu let alone something decent.

tera is overly “pretty” but not technically that good looking. it over uses bloom/hdr to such extremes that it’s hard on the eyes.

gw2 is actually better looking on a tehcnical basis, but not by much.

Computers Specifications:
- i7 3930k OC’d to 4.6ghz
- Corsair Dominator 32GB of RAM
- Creative Titanium EditionSound Card with Sennheisers PC350 Headset
- EVGA Geforce 680 GTX
- Monitor is only 22" at 1080p
- Intel SATA III 240GB SSD (Game runs on this one)
- WD Black 1T

Game runs at max settings with VSync enabled so FPS is capped at 60 FPS. I do NOT get 60 FPS always either. I dip into the 20s at times.

Sorry, but there is something wrong with GW2 considering I can run Crysis, BF3, and SC2 with no dips at all.

mmos’ don’t perform the same or make the same demands on hardware as fps games, let alone bf3 and crysis.

as for sc2, you must not do many battles with large amounts of units on screen, because it’s been known to drop to a slide show under that scenario even with out AA on.

I agree, Tera is THE BEST LOOKING, by far……
and to those that disagree with that statement, that is because you didn’t know how to use nvidia inspector or amd catalyst control to tweak the graphics.

You think that’s BS?
Look at these and try calling it BS one more time.

Tera:

Blow up the images, notice the distant textures, resolution, PROPER AA, draw distnace, shadow detailsk, and much much more, as you can see lol.

edit: Also, my computer never even saw what 30FPS looked like in Tera because it barely ever dipped below 60.
