Q:
221 hours over 1,581 days of bank space/hot pve/lion’s arch afk and some wvw.
Q:
It would be nice to move the UI elements to my liking and have some options. Also, it’s tiresome to keep clicking open your inventory bag for common use items so maybe add some extra slots for those.
I’m sure it would be relatively easy to do correct?
Hmmm I don’t think so. I think there are better goals in progress to achieve first on Anet side instead of improving the UI which is pretty solid so far
@flog – the trouble with that argument is, no matter what you consider important, someone else will say to you that there are more important things.
@OP – relatively easy compared to an expansion, sure, but not easy per se. Still, these are ideas worth raising (and have been raised before) but your post could use some more detail in how you envision them working. What are the options you’d like to have, for example?
While I’d agree that in most cases a movable/moddable UI would be nice, I rather like GW2 simplistic UI. It’s aesthetically pleasing, easy to use, and functional. This is the only game where I do NOT feel like I have to mod the UI to use it.
That’s my 2c worth at any rate.
I think the point of the non custom UI’s was to attempt a fair to all for those who it would be over their heads on how to do it. No one has an advantage, because everyone sees basically the same thing.

The UI itself is nothing but information anyway, that all players have access to in a graphical form
So how is it an advantage if someone tailors the UI to their preference ?
In my eyes it’s no different than a user changing the in-game Audio, which by all accounts is perfectly fine.
@zoltar MacRoth Yeah fair point but I still stand by my point and I agree 100% with theerantventure. I consider that simplicity is the optimal choice and you can already move stuff to your liking. Changing too much just alienates people in general. And this happens with any UI of any program whatsoever: sometimes the designers propose new solutions that end up being worse than the UI previous version
Hey peeps it’s not complex. Every mmo I’ve played allowed you to move the boxes to where you liked to have them or resize and reshape them individually. Some games even have reskins to make things look different.
As for the extra boxes requested… There are food items, utility consumables, seige blueprints, transformations… Could even be for faster weapon changes for ooc… So it’s less clicking the bag and filtering through to find that one thing you want.

Uh oh be careful what you ask for. The next thing you know gone from the gemstore are new wep/glider/backpack skins and instead only UI skins. Soon the tears would change from “too many wing skins I am sick of them” to “wtf who uses UI skins, bring back wings!” :P
I do agree the UI could use a few extra slots tho for say food and other consumables. And heaven forbid they ever give us build saves/templates and a slot on the UI to quickly toggle through a couple of them.
@flog – the trouble with that argument is, no matter what you consider important, someone else will say to you that there are more important things.
Very true, but in a medium where people ask for things and sometimes, rarely, the developers actually listen it’s important to ensure the developers get an accurate picture of views and so those that disagree have a reason to say so.
Heck, I’d just like it if they put in a toggle such that when activated it displayed what my FPS is.
I freaking HATE, absolutely HATE, the fact that to see this information I have to open up the options panel. That takes up a huge amount of screen realestate. other wise the only other time it can be displayed on the screen (that I know of) is during loading screen.
OH yeah… keeping track of a still image and showing off FPS then is really impressive I tell you.

Some people have different screen revolutions. Obviously with a massive screen you have more space to adjust the outputs you need without stepping on prime real estate. For easy example my 2560×1440 resolution I can have a pretty big chunk of mini map without it ever getting in my way. If someone is on a laptop running 1280×720 they will not have the same screen space with out having a scaled down harder to see mini map. This means better hardware has an advantage.
While that example is only for mini map, it does apply to all UI controls. On top of the hardware advantage, if a less computer literate person who could play the game, but didn’t know/understand how to build the UI in a custom way, they would be in same boat as the lower resolution, because they did not have customized UI controls.
Take a game like wow when you could use a custom XML mapped UI with tons of macros and various add ons, and you can see a clear picture of advantage in customization. Granted The UI is the lesser part of those three, imo it’s still an advantage in some degree.
I’m not quite sure how I feel about the sound argument, but I see other reasons for sound adjustments. How many times can you listen to the same audio loop in town while trying to clean your bags. And should you have to listen to that other players instrument because he paid money for it. I’m not sure sound is quite the same argument as UI.

Except if all users are capable of having the same data being displayed (As per your minimap example) which they are…One just made the choice to shrink it, then there is no issue as there is still no advantage gained.
That’s true if it was their decision to shrink it, but if they didn’t know how to make it bigger to be able to see the same things, then it would be an advantage to you having it larger.

It’s built into every mmo game I’ve ever played… You open options then edit user interface to your liking. You are way over thinking this.

Is this a joke ?
That’s like saying im at an advantage because i can weapon swap easier due to rebinding keys ?
If everyone starts on an equal playing field and can read the same information and one person chooses not too then that is not an advantage, that’s ignorance in action.
Again, if they choose not, that’s fine, you are for sure correct. Look at the NPE changes because people couldn’t figure out this game mechanics. These are the people that Anet seems to cater to in this game. They are the same ones that may not be able to figure out UI customization depending on the difficulty. Just because it’s something you or I could breeze through, doesn’t mean everyone who plays could. Hence, if everyone cant figure it out, then those who can may get an advantage. So, if you can’t recognize that, then there is no point in further discussing this.

This is not rocket science. You don’t need to have a degree in programming to do it.
Currently we can only resize things, not move them.

And many many people would tell you the NPE was a critical failure aimed at the lowest common denominator who have problems putting their pants on the right way in the morning…..
At some point childproofing/idiot proofing has to stop and people need to take some initiative.

When I used to use overwolf for the boss timers it would also keep your FPS shown in the bottom corner of the screen You could look at that as an option perhaps.
I’ve been wanting to move the target info bar at the top center of the screen for a long time, even if just moving it off center a bit.
Also, a toggle for things like showing/hiding the minipet without going into inventory would be nice (since apparently it’s an issue in wvw)

We can move some stuff, true, but we could use the option to move/hide more, for example to hide things like the ESL banner if we’re not interested in ESL. Anet don’t have to change the UI. They just have to allow us to. For example, the chat window can be resized, but the dailies/achievements window can’t (afaik). I’d like a bigger achievements window. Not asking anet to change it’s size, just to make it resizable.

Indeed. Everyone should have their say. I’m just saying that the “more important things” argument is pointless. The devs aren’t going to get anything out of it. There’s no data in it. /shrug

I use Game Booster to display my FPS in-game. It’s the only part of Game Booster (it’s free) I use, so there aren’t any required other parts, if you’re concerned about things like that.
Good luck.

Actually designing a customizable UI is a crap ton of work. Don’t undersell it.

It is indeed. I’d be happy if they just allowed the dailies window to resize like the chat already does.

As per usual someone doesn’t bother to read the response I have responded to and takes things out of context.
When

i dont mind the skill bar, i do mind the information in the corner.. let us remove it.
And ofc a extra skillbar for food etc would always be nice to have

AAA mmo… Going on 4 years… Yeah, when?

Actually it’s not, especially if you already have a pre-existing platform to work on. I’ve seen old mmos from ’03 – ’04 with UI that offer infinite flexibility when compared to GW2.
Like someone already said “When” is perfectly valid question. I’m still waiting for “hide personal story” checkbox to actually hide it.

Idk, maybe it’s too difficult for the devs. They might need to outsource a project like this.

I’m not saying it couldn’t be done, I’m saying it’s unlikely it can be done with just tweaking the code currently in place. So it would be a rewrite of the entire 2D UI code. Rewrites are never “simple”.
It appears that the UI is designed as a series of fix size images, tied to the UI scale setting, each with code that handles clicking within them. The limitations may possibly be tied to the tool used to build the client side UI at the time.
They may have wanted a clean, standard UI rather than a screen of plethora of windows as we’ve recently seen in MMOs like BnS and BDO. Remember they wanted a simpler, cleaner MMO experience with GW2 so customization was never a requirement.

I would pay good money for keybindable inventory slots
