When is chest loot determined?
Are you someone who believes a poker hand is determined when the cards are dealt, or shuffled?
A real answer would be nice.
What possible difference would it make? From a programming point of view, I’d leave it til the chest is opened.
Chest duration is short, so it’s not like you can go level up before you loot it.
Doesn’t matter. It is not affected by magic find.
Vayra – Elementalist
Forkrul Assail – Mesmer

That would be my answer as well.
Am still curious either way.
Thats a good question, sir. And for the ones that claim it is not affected my MF, do you have any official word on it? Because my chest drops are MUCH better with a MF set, so either it is a huge coincidence that I get lots of rares and exotics from chests when I use MF set and dont get when I dont use or MF does affect chests (which, in my experience, seems to be what happens).

You see, what we have here is called a Placebo.

Chests are not affected by MF at all.

They only work on creature kills, chests however have a better table then normal kills. We wanted to avoid the game play of killing a boss and then having to equip your whole Magic Find set before opening the chest.
Also magic find is calculated from when the creature is killed so it’s also not viable to use your normal gear set kill a boss then switch to magic find.

I think it does matter. Let me try to explain.
At this moment it is just a suspicion and me and some friends try to watching it … so the suspicion: i for myself recognised, if i loot a chest very early maybe as the first one, it seems i got a better loot. The best/worst examples are the Dragon-chests. Usually after fighting a dragon i rezz other players first, that they are able to loot the chest too. In that way i -usually- do not get good loot (white and blue, seldom green and never yellow or orange). Once it happened that i was standing just on the place where the chest was sown up. I looted immediately and i recived two rares.
Since this time, we are looking into this: we let loot other players and loot the chest very late. None of us reciveing good loot in this way, then one of us try to loot very early and the others more late. The one who looted the chest early seems to got a better loot. Till yet one rare at least. Even in the fractals, if i loot as the last person, i just got junk (white or blue), when i looted as the first person i recived much better loot, even exotics.
As i said it is just a suspicion (so please take it as such one!) and not much more at the moment, but my feelings are not so good on this.
ps: chest and magic find: yes it was said/written so: no affect. but it also has been told to us, that chapions should drop now much better loot and the droprate is increased etc. etc. Hm ….

I can confirm that this is not the case for everyone. In one Fractal run, I was the last person to loot the chest, well after the rest of my party did. I looted an exotic, while one person got a rare, and the other three didn’t get better than greens.
I think it’s totally random, and has nothing to do with when you loot/your MF percentage/whether Jupiter is in alignment with Capricorn/etc.
ETA: My MF was about 6% when I looted the exotic.
pfttt I did CoF today and got 2 exotics out of the chest with 0 MF, prove that MF doesn’t affect chests!
Right? Wrong. I have no baseline to compare it with, it’s more random luck than anything. Furthermore in total I’ve opened 20-30 chests? This is not a large enough number to base any conclusions on.
My advice to you, stop finding meaning and patterns into things that aren’t there. Next time, try to do a 360 kickflip in real life, then loot the chest. See what happens. If you get a good drop, do it again next time! If you get another good drop, chances are you’re going to do a 360 kickflip every time before opening a chest, and then only remember the times you did get good drops, and forget the times it didn’t work. Probably use some excuses like “Well, I only spun around 350, I didn’t do it properly, that’s why I got bad drops this time, next time I’ll do it right.”
MF does not affect chests, but DR definitely does.

Pardon me, but what is the meaning of DR?
Schrödinger’s cat.
Since it makes no real difference, I would expect it to be rolled when you open the chest as that is simpler to program. Chests and node determinations are not like loot determinations, because not every body has loot.

Diminishing returns but I have absolutely no idea what he means. Diminishing returns affects loot drops in the open world (farming), the number of dungeon tokens/xp/karma/silver you get for repeating the same dungeon path, and event rewards from rerunning the same events in rapid succession. What (how?) do you see DR on chests?

Diminishing Returns… it’s Anet’s draconian system to curb players from farming particular events/mob types/dungeon paths and artificially inflate the rate at which items can be obtained.

DR= Diminishing Returns
Farm a single mob/area/event too long and get less loot. (Or at least that’s how it’s supposed to work)
Ah I see two posters beat me too it :P
DR supposedly affects everything but I doubt it since I see the same bots running the same pattern at the same place on a regular basis.
since DR was designed to hurt bots. I don’t see it working very well
Th definitive test would be a lower-level character who earns a chest without leveling, then kills another mob or two sufficient to level.
Low-level chests contain loot up to the character’s level. If there’s loot in the chest from the character’s new, higher level, that would be evidence that chest loot level is determined when it’s looted, not when it’s earned.
I don’t care enough to try to get those data.
The other stuff about non-random RNG… Systematic dependencies can/do happen with digital simulated randomness. However it happens in GW2, I don’t think it’ll have anything to do with the superstitions surrounding it.

You’ve never gotten loot a couple of levels above your own?

Only since Mad King, not on the previously-existing pve content’s chests.
In any case, I don’t find it an interesting question. And I’m someone who’s thrown years of work into some obscure questions.

well if it’s like the bags it’s determined when you “use” them.
so I guess having mf on would affect those maybe (i dunno I haven’t checked on that).
