Q:

I am wondering when does ANET plan to update charr posture by making them stand more straight?

This has been frequently discussed over the years but no official effort was being made.

To remind, by doing this player base of charrs would raise and most of clipping issues would be solved.

Maybe no official effort has been made because the Devs don’t consider the Charr posture a problem but a part of the lore.

I was adamantly against the idea of playing a Charr character, having come from GW1. Then I saw some preview videos for GW2 and fell in love. I love the look. I love the way they run on 4 legs. I think they are great as-is. My secondary character is a Charr. (He used to be my co-main character, but he’s a Warrior. I’ve had him pretty much tabled since they nerfed Adrenaline retention time. That took the life out of Warrior for me.)

I don’t mind additional body style OPTIONS, but if they ever take away my current look, that will be the last nail in the coffin for me.

One of ANet’s biggest problems is that they can’t seem to wrap their minds around the concept of OPTIONS. Everything has to be an all-or-nothing CHANGE with them, and it has kittened me off many times since GW1. I think forcing a change in how peoples’ characters looked would anger a large portion of their fan base and result in more folks leaving the game.

In answer to your question then, “When will Charr get a posture fix?” I would say that it isn’t broken. It doesn’t need to be “fixed”. Ask for additional body types. But if they “fix” something that isn’t broken, they’ll only wind up with more problems than what you perceive now.

I don’t think there is a problem with their posture. They are much more bulky than charr from gw1. They’ve adapted to run faster on all fours now, so their body structure is more hunched over.

If this has been discussed for years, then you’d know that it was explained about 2 years ago in a post asking the same thing linking the same photo.

Charr Blade Storms and Axe Fiends didn’t stand upright, they hunched, maybe more-so than charr of GW2.

The Flame Legion made a big deal about standing upright, with the fringe status of the Flame Legion there’s no reason for modern charr to be standing upright.

Making an upright option for charr would require them to redesign every charr armor, not just the charr animation skeletons. An upright stance would stretch and squish all the current armor for charr in odd and random ways.

I think the posture subconsciously makes me think of a weaker race. Standing upright in GW1 with charrs gave the impression weapons could be wielded with more versatility in fighting. Otherwise you have a big bear/cat like creature which may not be as ‘powerful’ as one would imagine in attacking humanoid races. At least a reflection of fighting styles by body type. Then again… a lot of work physics wise.

Upright charr only existed as members of the shaman caste in GW1.

They were unnatural. The natural charr body had a curve to their back – as per Olias’ dialogue:

“Centaurs have a similar bone structure to Charr, actually. Their spine is slightly curved, easy to shatter if one knows just how to strike. I look forward to dealing with them.”

The shaman caste is no more, considered outsiders. This is why the only charr to be mostly upright that you see in GW2 are the Flame Legion shamans. (Note: One of five models that are mostly upright – others include the Igniter, Smoke Shaman, Lava Shaman, and Gaheron).

Just look here and see how many charr are upright compared to those that aren’t

You’ll only see four out of ten models when excluding the unique ones – including unique, it’s just six out of fifteen. And all of them were of the shaman caste or sharing models with them. Not even all spellcasters were upright.

Why do people think that upright charr were super common or something?

Also, NONE of the clipping issues come from their hunched posture, but the existence of tail and horn and the angle of the feet.

There is only one issue I see with the charr biology: the neck is too kitten long. It makes all helmets and hoods look silly on them.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Clearly it’s a trade-off. Options may equal a better player experience (and there are some I’d really like to see myself), but they often also equal more code. More code equals more bugs and a higher maintenance cost. And time spent on delivering and testing them is also a hit on other new stuff that might otherwise have been delivered with the same resource (such as LS). And on the whole, if it’s a question of some spiffy new interface function or a wadge of new content, I suspect most of us would pick content. But basically, it’s likely to be very much a question of, “If we’re opening up that part of the code anyway and it’s trivial to implement, maybe; otherwise, we can see the appeal, but it’s unlikely to happen.”
((Long-time programmer and tester here; I’ve seen how these things go from the inside.))

They would have to make a completely new skeleton, redo ALL the body armour at the very least, and redo or adjust all animations.

That’s a lot of work because a few players don’t like the posture of Charr characters, probably needing quit a lot of artists and animators that could be used for playable content.

Char are AWESOME as they are. The design choice to treat non-human races as truly non-human is one of the greatest things in GW2, and is one of the reasons I prefer this game and its lore over hundred others.

No asura with boobs, no straight backed charr, no more-human sylvari, no stupid “humanized” races which are merely humans with animal heads, like most other games do. Please, no.

I’m not going to downtalk anyone who desires a more humanized race or posters who want a “straight back” Charr but what I will say is the direction the devs took with their races is a HUGE improvement over other MMOs:

-Sylvari, plant people, just haven’t been done and is really unique and a cool aesthetic when customizing your own. Vines, flowers, bark, thorns, mushrooms, leaves, there’s just a lot you can do with them.

-Asura, both cute and ugly with a very peculiar look that isn’t your standard goblin/dwarf/child-looking type. Likely my favorite race as they are full to the brim with personality.

-Charr, great beastial aspects that set them apart from standard MMO beast race fare which basically amount to humans with animal heads and backward knees. Their proportions feel just right and how they can shift from bipedal to quadrupedal is an amazing feature that most take for granted! It’s a greatly unique feature not often done in games like this and the Charr pull it off so naturally.

So A++ on races, Anet. If/when you decide to add any more races as playable, don’t veer off course, you’re doing great!

Actually there won’t be a lot of work, if you got a little bit of 3D modeling and animation knowledge. The work is basically an addition skeleton posture and animation based on the existing Charr body type. I studied 3D modeling and animation about 12 years ago with 3D studio max, they already created this skeleton animation tool so you can assign animation to any body type without a need to recreate the model upon animation change. It was the most widely used software in most 3D game, modding etc by that time.

For example your type /salute with a Charr, he can straighten his back to salute on using necro staff 1 stood up animation, because it is all comes to the skeleton and the animation assigned on it. Of course it is possibly have clipping issue but do you think they actually care?

I am not saying it is easy work, but talking about creating new model or armor as a reason is not convincing. I dont think they will make it happen, as it should be an option at launch. It was not there, so it is possibly wont happen.

Charrs are just fine in my opinion. I think their posture is related to the fact that most of the time they are supposed to be walking on 4 feet so the weight is distributed across all four of them. Theoretically in my head, having them straighten up throughout the entire time on two legs would mean too much pressure on their spine, while leaning forward as it is right now, it allows them to quickly switch from 2 to 4 legs.

Also, I love the way they look, don’t touch my kitties.

And I want quadrupedal running on my Asura! Then I can run around Rata Sum barking at people like a chihuahua with a 150 IQ.

Silliness aside, I won’t say Charr need their posture to be ‘fixed’. But options are good, and there are some of my characters I’d use an upright stance for. And while the hunch is appropriate for their huge necks and bestial body type, it’s a little meh-inducing to have that kind of hunch compete with chest armor cosmetics. Coming from WoW, I get this kind of meh all the time with orcs, trolls, and worgen. So I can understand why the desire for the option is there.

Generally speaking, in these games the less human-like a PC race is, the less players choose to play it. So there is already a minority of players who care about the charr either way, and it’s hard to say whether more players among this minority like them as they are or not. But the beast-like appearance is probably a major reason why a lot of those players chose to play a charr.

This is a design decision that was made long before the game released, and changing it would make the charr into something resembling furry, beast-headed norns. There would still be clipping issues, a lot of visual effects would have to be changed, it would introduce a massive number of bugs into the game, and many who preferred it the other way or were annoyed by the clipping/bugs would complain, loudly. Even offering a choice between two postures would involve a lot of work for the approval of a tiny percentage of the player base.

They recently cancelled all in-progress Legendaries so starting a new project to appeal to an even smaller segment of the player base just isn’t going to happen.

Sad but true. Even the stuff that would definitely qualify as a fix – backpacks attaching to the skeleton badly so they seem to float around the back, and shoulder pieces often clearly hovering in mid-air – I’m not holding my breath for. And that’s not even getting to the dreaded ethereal tail. I’d just settle for “all new armor/outfits from this point forward will work” on that.

..I might still be bitter about the bandit sniper outfit and how that was utter garbage for Charr.
