When will the reserved names be released?
Srsly, vulture. Just come up with a different name. You don’t know that person’s story. They might have a sentimental attachment to that character. Maybe it was a teen with a social disorder or learning disability that used GW as tool to over-come their limitations. Maybe that account is seven years old and the owner is off fighting in a war, waiting for the days he can come back and appreciate the simple things he might have taken for granted, and finally get to play a game he has been waiting for for years with the descendant of one of his oldest virtual friends.
Perhaps a tragic and unfortunate event befell someone before their time and their friends have name added to their friends list in memorial. Could you imagine if it was shown as “online” one day? You would cause people to freak out.
Stop circling the carcasses of GW accounts and start your own legacy :p

Honestly, I dont follow. Release them how? If there is a name you’ve had your eyes on and its not up for grabs chances are its in use by a GW player playing GW2.
What do you expect? A full list of names that were reserved? No thats not ever going to happen. Chances are the non-used GW names are up for grabs, but the one/ones you want arent.
You will never get a written list with all the names. By released they probably ment released i.e not locked anymore to any account, not released as in “press release”.
The system works just like if you delete a toon and use the name on another, you will have x time to use it, after that its up for grabs. If the name is in use it will never get released.
There are also no active/inactive accounts in this game since its not sub based. Even if they a player takes a 2 year leave of absence the name will still be his aslong as he has a character with the name.

You can tell which names are reserved, because when you try to use it, it says “This character name is reserved.” not “This character name is in use.” That’s pretty easy to figure out. I’m not looking for a list. The non-used GW names are not up for grabs; that’s my point.
Vulture? I simply want a name that someone else evidently doesn’t, as they haven’t bought Guild Wars 2 and used it. I’m sure there are a lot of other people out there in the same boat. Sure, I could spell it a different way, but I’d rather not.
I’ve been waiting for names to free up since release. It is fairly irritating since they’ve said, “Shortly after launch, we’ll free up all the unclaimed names for new Guild Wars 2 players to use.”
Considering with the tiniest bit of imagination one can pretty much have any first name within the naming guides they want by using a unique last name….I fail to see the big deal. Just make a character and get on with it.
Was promised by Arenanet via their blogpost on reserved names. Just because you don’t see the big deal doesn’t mean its not an issue.
“it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun, rather than having fun”
Guild missions say otherwise.

What about me? I’m trying to use my own name, from a character I created on a different account. You know how they didn’t have character slot upgrades in the early years of GW1? Yeah, that. I just want to recreate MY character, but I can’t. Because ANet won’t release the names like they said they were going to.
It’s been over two months, I think it’s about time, don’t you?

I found this out by accident, trying to name one of my characters from my other Guild Wars 1 account which is not the one I had to have them manually link. If they ever do release the names, I’m almost 100% sure it will still be available.
