I know that you could just 1v1 someone in an empty pvp arena, but that is besides the point. I want to see dueling added sooner rather then later, and there are several reasons why:

1. Cities need some chaos
let’s face it, in the real world, **** goes down in the city, (especially where I live,) and GW2 should be no exception. LA is a city full of brigands and pirates, but do we see people in drunk brawls? no. Do we pick a fight with that one guy who won’t stop bothering us? no. Do crowds form in a circle around a pair of players going at it? not if they can’t fight in the first place. We can’t just have a place ran by pirates be a utopia, it’s unrealistic.

2. The decision maker
Do you know how often the officers in guild debate who will roll for guild challenges? I say we have them fight to the death, loser has to roll. but that is just one scenario. I feel like having something like that would settle actual arguements and decisions alike.

3. That one guy
yes him. we all have that one guy we want to 1v1 while guildmates and bystanders alike watch it go down. I have one, and I tell him every time, when dueling comes out, he’s first

I want duels in game too but not in towns…anywhere on the World Map just not in tows so that we finally see this “living world” looks like something.Atm all people do is stay afk in LA wile other towns and rest of the Tyria feels dead.Duels should get people out of LA,that whould make game more alive and also whould be good addition to the game.

I think it would be cool like you suggested as long as there where some rules/restrictions maybe like if you had to agree to be dueled like accepting a party invitation. I guess the only thing that holds me back from jumping on the dueling bandwagon is the thought of “super elite macho kittens” Going around and trolling/killing players for no reason or just cause they can. I dont want to have to worry about getting murdered while crafting or gathering etc… Maybe this fear is unfounded..idk

I agree that convenient private 1v1 duels should be added, but disagree about having it happen in Cities. In Tarnished Coast, it would be used 100% by people griefing RPers. Right now, when they stand on top of RPers and spam powers just to be jerks, it’s fairly obvious what’s going on to the GMs who investigate. But if they could cover that behavior under a “totally legitimate duel”, that sort of behavior will blossom from its current minor nuisance status.

My kneejerk reaction to dueling is I hope it never comes. Phew, I feel better now. Anyway – As long as both parties have to agree to a duel I see no real issues with it provided once I turn down a duel I can not be bothered by that person again for at least 24 hours.
If one cannot reject a dueling request, then I hope it never happens. If one can reject it that I am all for it, I might even encourage the devs to make a victory count achievement. I can tell you now that my score in such an achievement would be zero.

Dueling is just one aspect of what’s wrong with GW2 pvp. Conflict in GW2 doesn’t go beyond limited areas (SPvP & WvW).

Their design philosophy, is basically: everyone holds hands, in a cooperative environment, against PvE.

This is why there isn’t any factions. In WoW, you have Horde vs. Alliance. In Rift, you have Defiance vs. Guardians. In Swtor, Empire vs. Republic, etc.. the list goes on.

In my opinion, this was a very bad decision. Imagine a faction-based environment in GW2, where the Vigil, Priory, Whispers were at war. It doesn’t necessarily have to be these orders either, as they could’ve used old GW1 lore for Shining Blade and White Mantle. The possibilities are enormous here.

Instead, we get a watered down PvP environment in WvW, where faceless enemies represent a server, instead of a faction. How lame is that? And SPvP doesn’t excite either, because it just represents Blue vs. Red colors, instead of factions.

If we see dueling, we better not see it in the more populated areas of Major Cities. I already had to deal with the people that spammed their horns as if they were honking a vuvuzela at the 2010 World Cup… I don’t want to have to deal with people blasting all their skills on cooldown because they want to show off how “pro” they are.

I’m all for dueling, and I will admit that I’d love to see the stadium in the Black Citadel be converted into a 1v1 battle arena similar to how the Queen’s Gauntlet worked with bosses. Now that would be awesome.

I beg to differ on the WvW, I’ve been in one too many attacks were some one shouts “for the pass”, and the servers are the factions themselves, even if there is no lore behind it

I don’t mind if they add it if people want it, but it should be in its own area, either instanced so that people from the same server can duel each other, or in the obsidian sanctum or both. Just like sPvP, I can then avoid it if I don’t want to participate.

I am dead against having dueling in cities and in open world, even with the ability to block requests.

I don’t want to be subjected to some troll messaging me in whisper, then say chat, then map chat and having to have every troll that wants to duel on a block list.

Town would be annoying and open-world is out of the question because events scale to people in the area- a bunch of people standing around watching a duel or dueling would make it impossible for others to actually play the game.

Put duels in arena and make it a spectator sport- Black Citadel is perfect but a themed arena per city would also be good.

I have been against dueling in GW2 alot but a few times now I have realy missed the ability to duel… Like me and my partner we always duel while waiting for others in other games. It’s a fun thing to do instead of just standing there doing nothing. We have tried costume brawl but it is far from the same way of Dueling and it doesn’t give the right feeling…

I am the game nerd and I catch up with game mechanics pretty fast but my partner she is good but not that used to games as I am so in other games I usually duel her to teach her some technique’s that I find usefull. And in the end she usually ends up kicking my kitten ti’l I bite the moon

Now I would realy like an easy way to duel in this game, even if it cost me a few hundred gems as long as there is an option to disable duel-requests and also not to be able to duel in Crouded areas. Best would be if the duelers could be placed in an instanced area but I guess that would be hard.

Yes please, dueling allowed everywhere in PvE.

For those who seem to be against this, add the option to opt out of duel functionality entirely, like can’t even be asked to a duel. When you click on a player it should have a tiny icon of a sword or something next to their name at the top of the screen indicating they are available to duel. You right click their name and click Challenge to Duel, in which they must either accept or deny your challenge.

It’s based on invitation, no griefing there, no problem. I’m an RPer and even I want this change because i want to be able to RP sparring with my guild mates or even be able to fight when an actual IC fight breaks out while RPing.

Edgar, the “placed in an instanced area” is, to me, the ideal form of dueling, were it to exist. You’ll find that most of the people asking for dueling are against that though.

The only reason for it to not be instanced would be for duelists to feel good for ganking newbs, that is, either trolling or showing off. Neither one is a behaviour I’d wish to encourage in the community.

I would prefer to never see open world dueling. I’ve given my reasonings for that in several other threads, so I won’t go into it again.

However, it has been said that it is something they would like to do, but based on other comments, I don’t think that is even on the radar right now. Of course, with the multitude of people voicing (loudly) how much they don’t want to see this feature, there is the possibility that they change their mind and never implement it outside of a mists 1v1 arena.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Yea I guess that’s true, but the sole perpose of dueling is to try builds, having fun while waiting, train for oncomming dangers and so on. So an instanced area would do well if it where possible to achieve, it would be what the real duelists be asking for. Ganker/greifers/people who needs a false ego boost dueling low levels can go play WoW or other games with open PvP.

If it be possible. Adding a way for others to be invited by duelers to spectate and look at traits and so on, just like in sPvP. (Both participants must accept every invited spectator)
I would like that.

The best way dueling could fit the GW2 world would be for the Consortium to open up dueling arenas in Southsun where you and your challenger could pay a couple silver and queue up (if there’s a queue) to step into a dueling circle (think similar to the Queen’s Jubilee) and have at it as a spectator sport. The side bets alone would make that worthwhile and you wouldn’t intrude on the cooperative PvE world.

I feel like dueling would be awesome, but it would have to be done correctly. Obviously duels would have to have a system in place where you accept it, kinda like accepting a party invite. I could see after you accept the duel an on screen pop up does a 10-5 sec countdown, so it’s clear that the duel has started.

What about scaling? In a low level area and an 80 duels a 10? As soon as the duel starts does it scale up the 10, like it does in wvw? to me that makes the most sense.

Mob interference? While i like the aspect of mob interference in wvw, cause it adds some extra strategy (rallying off pve mobs and such), not sure how it could work in a duel. If a random pve player passes by the duel that has a couple mobs in it, they could just kill the mob and then the downed player would rally. For this i’d say only make duels available in duel rings, you could have these scattered all through out the world, in various locations. Tie them in with the lore a little, make them look like training grounds at serph camps for example.

I’m against the idea of making duels instanced, because it’s fun to watch duels. If they were all instanced then you’d have to be actively in the party to even get in the instance.
If they made the actual duel arenas instanced but viewable by the open world (kinda like the queen’s gauntlet or whatever it was called) then that could be a good system.

Just a couple ideas for the discussion.

I don’t care if ANet adds private dueling as an aspect of PvP, but I do NOT want to see it anywhere in open world. Not in cities, not in open maps. I don’t feel like dealing with an endless spam of duel requests, repeated whispers of “duel me!” or constant grief in map chat. I’ve seen it happen before, and I believe ANet would be making a huge mistake implementing it. Want dueling? Set it up in a PvP aspect and leave PvE alone.

I have always been against dueling, but having arenas like the one in BC, or opening the Queen’s Gauntlet for it would be perfect. Open world dueling gives way to much mobility. People who duel shouldn’t have kiting half way across Lion’s Arch as an option. It should be restricted to a reasonable area, and arenas are great for that.

The Mists would be ideal, I agree, but Consortium run arenas in Southsun would add an element to the game (getting the Consortium more involved in things) and may start drawing more people to Southsun. Sure, the audience would be there to watch the fights, but a massive karka event in the audience would be worth the price of admission.

No, and I don’t think it’s possible to properly state in words how emphatically I believe that to be a horrible addition to the game. The very design of the PvE is built around all players being on the same team and cooperating whether or not you’re in a party. It’s ridiculous to attempt to modify working, live code at the very heart of the game for something best left, if implemented at all, to either a PvP zone or specialized arenas located out of the way, for example run by the Consortium in Southsun.

Never. This game has PvP and PvE be seperate things, which is great for a lot of people, me included.
And as for your arguments. Things don’t have to happen all the time, the city I live nearby don’t have things like that happening at all. And it is Ex Pirates, not actual pirates as such anymore. Lions Arch may be founded by some who USED to be pirates, but it has laws to follow and the Lion Guard is there to keep the peace.

This is inaccurate.

People, in other games at least, duel in public open world locations:

to have something to do while waiting for an event/boss/whatever to spawn.

to meet new people with similar in game interests.

to compare and contrast build performance, with input from a variety of individuals.

and so on.

Never. This game has PvP and PvE be seperate things

Anet is trying to bring them closer together. They do not want PVE and PVP to be separate things.

the city I live nearby don’t have things like that happening at all.

I would be interested in knowing what city, particularly a major one, has no violence.

And it is Ex Pirates, not actual pirates as such anymore. Lions Arch may be founded by some who USED to be pirates, but it has laws to follow and the Lion Guard is there to keep the peace.

Having laws and law enforcement does not mean that there are no pirates in a city founded by such.

There are better ways to solve conflicts than fight. And no we do not all have someone we want to fight, I certainly don’t.

GW2 (and MMOs in general really) is a game about using violence to solve conflicts.

This honestly. I don’t understand why people are freaking out over this when in almost any game with dueling it has the option to turn off duel requests. It literally should not have any effect on them, and to those that say they will get hassled to duel well those people are no different than people in dungeons hassling you over your performance and build.

I’m pretty sure most of them are misinterpreting “Dueling” to mean “Open World PvP”. Or else they’ve been in games where just spamming Duel invites could be a harassment tactic, because the Devs were too shortsighted to put a cooldown after the first is declined, or include them under the umbrella of Blocked Accounts.

I would adore open world dueling! So long as I can toggle of duel availability like some people have mentioned, I feel like it would help a ton with the feeling of a dynamic, living world. Wandering around the map and encountering duels, cheering people on, etc. . . . this sounds like exactly the world I would love to inhabit. PvE lovers can keep focusing on PvE, but with the added bonus of spectating random events that are truly random, because they are initiated by other players, not some algorithm in the system. Oh my lord, this entire idea is wonderful! I might even eventually work up the courage to toggle “available for duels” at some point!

The problem is, that Duel-Spammer don’t accept a “No” .. so you get a popup in the middle of a fight and have to click “no” just to get the next popup 1-2 seconds later, and that normally 3-4 times at least in a row.

This is why people are suggesting an option to toggle whether not you are available for duels at all. If you are toggled on, you are available to be invited, but you can still turn them down. If you are toggled off, people can’t even challenge you to a duel, which eliminates the spammers.

Also, if you want to stay toggled on but you are being bothered by some individual, I’m sure there will be an option to block the kitten.

i’d really rather not see duels here, it’s too easy to be a trolling device.

I have yet to see it done right in any mmo.

3. That one guy
yes him. we all have that one guy we want to 1v1 while guildmates and bystanders alike watch it go down. I have one, and I tell him every time, when dueling comes out, he’s first

This is exactly why dueling isn’t going to happen.

My posts are facts as I know them, or my own opinion, and do not represent any guild.
