I suppose this could be sarcasm, but if it’s not, I think a lot of players, like myself, prefer to walk in the world wearing armor that is believable, wielding weapons that look usable.

As for the OP, I personally think the complaint is rather unfounded and would appear to stem from a distinct lack of knowledge of what is available in other MMOs out there. In my opinion, only LOTRO comes close to GW2 in customization. Most other games are poor in enabling player choice in how they look. And besides armor and weapons, the amount of dyes available can completely change a look of an armor piece or set.

The only complaint I can make with GW2’s skin system is the inability for me to get the Stalwart Helm anymore, which doesn’t exist at the moment, which is really frustrating! But besides that, complaining about skins and citing it as a fault of GW2 is laughable. Go play Age of Conan if you think customization is lacking in GW2 to see how baffling your complaint of “lack of options” is.

I wish that GW2 had more non trench-coat options for male medium armor, but overall I think the game has a decent number of skins for both armor and weapons. I guess I’d probably put GW somewhere around the middle of the pack of games I’ve played. Not the best, not the worst.

Most of my favourite armor sets/pieces come from dungeons. So I guess for me the game is working as intended – level to 80, get ugly, bulky armor from Orrian temples or WvW, do dungeons to get nice skins.

Although I may possibly be the only person to make ascended armor for the skin. Specially the medium coat on a human female. I think without the helmet and shoulders and with a very dark main colour and a very pale one on the embroidery (specifically I’m thinking Indigo and something like Purple Ice) it looks really good.

But overall I think this game has a huge range of customisation options. It’s rare to see two characters who look the same, even if they’re the same race, gender and profession.

I do that too! I’ve found that creativity and some experimentation work best. By that I mean don’t go with full sets of armor, but mix n’ match and create your own. My “look” is very important to me and none of my toons have full sets of anything. They’re all mix n’ match and (I personally think) they look awesome.

Take a gander at https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Post-a-pic-of-your-character-only-if-your-armor-is-mix-n-match/first for ideas. And each profession page has a sticky of character screenshots. Experiment!

And a lot of the armor in the game is realistic, pieces that look like they fit the world. If you don’t want confetti cheese armor and weapons, change the skin. It’s not hard at all.

Obviously it’s fashionable to bash Arenanet for everything they do, but armor and weapon choice isn’t something to complain about. It certainly is subjective and sometimes the better looking armor in one’s opinion isn’t necessarily one of the later-available ones as one would normally expect.

Case in point: my Human Ranger has worn the full Seeker Armor set from pretty early on since it looks the most “Rangery”, having transmuted stronger armor with it along the way but always keeping the Seeker Armor look. By the time he finally reached Level 80 recently, I was surprised to find that I ended up not preferring the looks of even the higher-level armor to the Seeker Armor, so that’s the look he still sports to this day (albeit now dyed brown and green rather than the previous all-brown for a more “Ranger” look).

I agree that more variation to appeal to different tastes would be nice. I’m fairly satisfied with the armor for all my characters except my human female guardian. It seems like there isn’t much choice between a couple of “sexy” outfits and a whole bunch of heavy armor that makes my character’s butt and hips looks like she just birthed triplets. I’ve mixed and matched many different outfits, but there’s little I care for in regards to leggings. I love the full armor (knight-like look); just don’t love the hefty hips/butt, and tail look.

That being said, being able to dye our outfits many different colors is awesome. Love that.

In regards to legendary weapons, I like them a lot, but I doubt I’ll ever have one unless I manage to level up another character and make her a weaponsmith. If I bought enough gems to pay for one, it would probably cost me about $500 real money. There’s no way I’ll ever do that.

Dont think like that, a Legendary is very attainable, unless your first toon JUST hit 80?

If you want one id suggest, farm farm farm all speed dungeons, then once you have 1-3k tokens of a few dungeons, grab the exotic weapons you want a legendary for and mystic forge em. Use laurels on T6, and turn your T5 into T6. You can do it ^.^

In regards to the OP i agree, the only thing i can tolerate to wear is the ancestral outfit, all the armors are plain and most people look alike. Perfect World [pwi] had better looks in its ftp game

It’s not the quantity, it’s the quality.

I know games with far less gear choices that makes you feel much more epic. Especially the first 60 levels, you look like crap. Especially with medium armor, my Ranged looked like a tug for 80 levels, no sign of the tribal Norn look they fed me on the character creation skin.

Which is really a shame, as an artist myself I can say that Anet have great artists! I don’t know why there is so little imagination in the gear/weapons (and so much joke).

I was a GW1 founder since beta. I honestly have never been more disappointed in a game, going from GW1 to GW2 The armor and weapons in Guild Wars 1 looked beautiful and awesome. I’ve looked at every piece of armor and weapon in GW2 and it is 99.99% ugly, purely quantity over quality. I dare any of you to log into GW1 and take a look at what people are still wearing in the cities, I haven’t wanted to play GW2 in around a year since doing so.

It’s almost funny, because I recently noticed a game called Vindictus, that came out before GW2 and immediately recognized that GW2 had been developed trying to copy Vindictus. And the thing is, Vindictus looks a million times better not to mention the skills used in fighting which make it actually tactical and fun, unlike GW2. I started playing a character named Hurk and you have to time many of your attacks to the moment you’re going to be hit, which counterattacks and gains health. This sort of reflex-based, hand-eye coordination stuff is what GW2 is sorely lacking because they dumbed down the game in order to allow everyone to play it; the skills and armor are really disappointing.

Perhaps what didn’t come through in my post is that what surprised me when I first played Vindictus was that I was shocked and immediately recognized that this was exactly the kind of armor style (maybe even weapon style) that GW2 was trying to emulate in development, except they rendered a much poorer version of it. I couldn’t believe the similarity at first, but I knew that Vindictus’s style was created before GW2, so apparently this is what they based some of it on.

Btw, if you want proof GW2’s armor/weapon art went downhill from GW1, just look in the gem store, the Primeval armor looks a billion times better than anything now and it was a skin taken and updated from GW1.
Btw the Runic Blade in GW1 was my favorite looking sword, based on the LOTR sword ‘anduril’. I recently saw the latest GW2 version. They covered it in cheap-looking glitter and tacked on the lamest particle emitter to vomit sprinkled glitter all over the place. They used to be so good at making cool, attractive skins, what happened? They took the classic GW1 fiery dragon sword, which in GW2 (HoM unlock) still looks better than almost anything else, painted it a flat light blue removed the particle effect, it looks like plain garbage and they act like it’s epic gear? They also took the awesome Zodiac sword that used to be black and white/gold in GW1, screwed up the colors and again they act like it’s desirable when they just made it worse! I’d like to know who’s responsible for these inexplicable aesthetic decisions? They have the rights to all the great GW1 stuff and just squandered it all!

Factually speaking, there are more skins and choices to be made for how you want to look in GW2 than in GW1 and most other MMOs. You don’t think they look good? Well, that’s nice, but I would wager for the vast majority of players who still play this game, who strive to unlock skins and armors that suit them, the idea of a distinct lack of options isn’t something they are crying about as one of the major problems of the game, else they probably wouldn’t be playing the game.

If you can’t find a look that suits you in this game, then you probably won’t find some hidden treasure trove of super awesome, world fitting sets and armor skins just brimming with desire for you to snatch them up and make ‘em yours in 90% of other games out there. If you want a look and go after it, but can’t find it, maybe ask people for help if you don’t have the eye for it. I spend a lot of my time nowadays just sifting through the wardrobe, looking for armor and weapons that look good together and fit a unique look I’m after. If you’ve spent as much time as I have and are fed up with lack of good options, I’m unsure what exactly you do want in the game.

This all sounds similar to when somebody has 6-10 level 80s all with 100% map completion and l33t armor and weapons, yet complain about a lack of content. Can’t please everyone when Arenanet is doing better than most games out there. The expectations of some irrationally self-entitled people is ridiculous.

My thoughts on this are to bring back ALL the original GW armours – don’t update them to be bad anime flame/spike horrid pieces of kitten – just bring them in and update the textures to match GW2’s steel/leather/cloth reflection and dye values.

I would LOVE to have the 15k Drakescale for my ranger – my guardian would be walking proud in Templar gear. Necromancer armours were all better than any of the light armour available in game now.

Also, if they did this, put them in the gem store AND have them accessible through in-game rewards. People who want it quickly will spend gems – those who would rather spend time can get them via (dare i say it) new dungeons….

I’d love some throwback GW armors. I know that they’d be added into the gem store (which I don’t like) but it’d be nice to have some of them.

I remember ranger having a nice range of non-trenchcoats, especially female.
The monk armors would be a nice nod to the old game without bringing back the class.
And the tattoo/scar armors were always very popular.

That’s your opinion. In my opinion Primeval armor (at least the warrior one which they reused) looked ridiculous in GW1. Although it’s better than Profane which they also copied over. At least the Krytan armor is vastly improved by the ability to hide the shoulders, but it’s still not a set I’ve ever liked.

My first reaction when I saw those 3 in the gem store was confusion – the only explanation I could think of was that they were planning to bring lots of sets over and were keeping the best ones for later.

More reasonably it’s just a matter of taste – I guess someone at Anet (or maybe lots of people) really likes those sets. But I don’t.

I do like a lot of the GW2 armors, which you apparently don’t.

I also think a lot of the changes to how armor works helps a lot, like making the shoulders a separate piece and enabling us to dye any part of it. The more we’re able to customise it the more likely it is everyone will be able to make something they like.

There’s like 500+ skins in the wardrobe… that’s not enough choice for you?

Sometimes it doesn’t just boil down to numbers. You can have 500 really lame skins in a game. I think OP wants quality, not quantity.

Most skins I agree are quite bad. I’m not even fussed on many of the legendary weapons.

I think if Anet wants us to really like a skin, they should do any of these:

1) Allow us to dye our weapons – just like in GW1 (with the exception of reward-based colors of course, such as Super Adventure Box weapons and the like)

2) Give more glowy/special effects

3) Allow us to customise certain parts of a weapon’s appearance (perhaps this could be added to legendaries to make them more enticing? I don’t know). I don’t have a legendary, probably never will, but I think the least they should give is some nice effects, the stat switching ability, and something like this, that nothing else in the game provides)

4) Have Black Lion ARMOR Specialists (suggested by someone on these forums, I forget where) where you can purchase armor skins to go along with your weapons. The amount of times I’ve tried to match my armor to those new ley line skins… URGH. Let’s just say I’m so glad I only got myself the staff skin!

Forever a supporter of more male skimpy armor
