Im debating on buying a precursor and making a legendary. Ive played GW2 since December of 2012 and have never gotten a drop, nor have my friends. I was just wondering how and where others have gotten their precursors.

Maybe you will get lucky and get one for Festivus.

Or you can throw rares and exotics in mystic forge and just hope for a precursor drop

First one bought post- Karka event when they were cheap. Last one came from the forge after months of throwing the yellows from bosses into the forge

All three came from the TP. The fourth one will too unless I somehow get insanely lucky.

All 6 from the forge, time span of about 8 months.
76g for Zap. 620g for Spark, 20g got me 2 of The Legend, one after the other. 40g for The Colossus. 45g Chaos Gun.
RNG is one devious Mistress.

My husband bought my pre-cursor off the TP for me and gave it to me as a Christmas gift since I had all the other parts for it but I hadn’t managed to get it from the mystic toilet in a little over two years of trying.

I got one from a chest at the end of CoF. It was the harpoon and sold it for 30 gold back in the days. I also got Zap from a random drop in WvW. I bought Dawn, Twilight, Storm, Legend and Energizer from the TP.

You can put stuff on the Mystic Forge, but if you want a specific precursor you are better buying it on the TP. The Forge work better with very large quantity when you gonna tend toward the average. If you just want 1 precursor it’s all about luck. But you could do like me and wait for the expansion when you gonna be able to complete a collection to get precursor.

Thanks for all the replies. Since its the summer of George, I thought I would get lucky from a drop. And I never win the feats of strength so Festivus is out of the question…

Ive tried the Mystic forge once with a lot of rares… just lost a lot of gold. My friends seem to get Ascended and Exotics like crazy. RNG….

I dont believe you either, as you will probably be the first one to forge a precursor with only 3 staves.

On topic:
I played well over 7000 hours and never got a precursor drop, not even from the karka event. BUt i got about 25 from the forge. The first two i crafted into legendaries, the rest i sold for profit.

ATM t5 mats are very cheap, even the expensive weapon types can be crafted for 40-kitten , if you get the mats on buy order.
Most pro forgers claim you need an average of 2000 rare weapons to get a pre cursor.
At that rate, it would cost you 800-900g.

Personally, i crafted 15 pres during wintersday, iirc my average was around 800 rares per pre then. Since the 6/23 patch i forged 9 more, for that batch my average was below 500 rares.

1st: Zap – Out of toilet, 4 rares weapons random.
2nd: Spark – Out of toilet, 3 rares + 1 mystic stone.
3rd: Storm – Out of toilet. 4 rare weapons random.

Also, got on my acc 2 legends(the staff precursor), dawn and dusk, all of then bought torugh TP.

A: – I use Toilet with every single rare weapon i drop. Only the weapons, and only the dropped ones. I never buy-to-try, or craft-to-try. I salvage all rare armors for ectos.

The RNG model that game companies seem to love today are just one of several design decisions that discourage community and socialization. Joining a guild, making friends, helping and depending on them allowed people to progress. Unfortunately, many players will never know what a true MMORPG community can be (pre 2005 era) because of implementations like this. MMORPGS today are nearly as shallow as a red team/blue team halo match.

Eh there’s still ways to help. I know my guildies were funneling me their shortbow drops to help me have more opportunity to put things in. Also when I was just in need of some T6 mats to finish the last gift they donated some mats to me as well. I’ve also helped others work on Ascended gear by giving them silk, and I’ve helped them with T6 mats as well. There are still things guildmates to can do to help each other.

Spent some dungeon tokens on four longbows…with the intent of salvaging or selling the product of the MS…out pops Leaf of Kudzu…one-time shot. Have not tried again since then.

I received a shield precursor (forget which one) from a champions bag that came from the tri-color chest in Kessex Hills. Sold it.
And… I got Dawn (or maybe Dusk, one of those, I sold it after looking what was involved in making a legendary) from…..the Star of Gratitude. I was shocked to say the least.

Santa brought me mine.

I got my precursor from the trading post.

Almost 2,500 hours played since launch, but I’m not surprised I’ve not gotten one in any other way because most of that has been spent in low level maps (often on low level characters) where level 80 rares of any kind are rare or impossible to get and I very rarely use the Mystic Forge except to make salvage kits.

I don’t understand why you think MMOs before 2005 didn’t have RNG, or why you think it prevents communities from helping each other out.

I actually got quite a bit of help with my legendary from my guilds. Ranging from people agreeing to do the same dungeon with me 5 nights in a row so I could get tokens to sending me spare materials, I got the last bit of gold I needed for T6 mats from random donations (one of them from a total stranger) during the Multiple Sclerosis fund raising event.

And I’ve helped other guildies with legendaries and other goals over the years too.

My precursor was from IBM.

1 from the forge (Dawn), 2 from TP (Zap and Rodgort’s Flame)

I got mine 2 days ago. First drop ever after 6k hours played. It was from “Bag of Gear” in Silverwastes.

What is this precursor you speak of? Or better yet, what are ascended chest drops? Never seen either of these. Played since headstart as well.

I pressed a couple buttons on the TP and got The Lover after about 3 hours.

Cost me about 470g at the time.

4 from the MF and purchased 5 from the TP

Played 607 hours total on all characters got both precursor from trading post. First one was tooth of frostfang for 520g. 2nd one is dawn for 840g. Couldn’t wait for dawn price to drop cut was afraid that it will go up instead so bought it without hesitation. Gave up on toilet long ago. And rng is not my best part but my worst. So ya I’d say if you played that long then buy them from TP. Just keep an eye on the one you want. Like check the TP every 20 to 30 minutes to see 8 price drop.

Over 5k hours since head start and the only pre I ever got was Howl, off a yellow electric fish, in Bloodtide Coast. Sold it for 50g… Seemed like a good deal at the time.

1st: Dusk from TP
2nd: The Chosen from defending SM lord room from some SFR scrub zoneblob (WvW)
3rd: The Bard from NE camp veteran (WvW)
4th: Again The Bard from the same NE camp (WvW)

Was about rank 1500 when I got the 2nd bard. Now close to rank 2000. The next one must be just behind the corner!

2.5k hours and never seen precursor in my inventory. Still working on my first legendary. Because I mostly play PvP and WvW roaming, my income is pretty low, but I hope I will be able to buy The Hunter soon enough, or I’ll just wait and craft it when that’s available…

I’ve mystic forged 8.

Bought 4 of them. Mystic forged the legend. Had 5 drop for me. The Zap is very common. I saw the steady price increase for it over the years :P. Do not rely on luck just save up and buy it.

got 10. 6x dusk, 3x dawn, 1x axe. all from mystic forge.

I had really bad start, spent more like 2k gold, got nothing, then in 15 minutes 2x dusk and 1x dawn. I always used rares and also forged exotics that I got from them.

i got my a free precurser from someone who had just joined my guild. turns out the account had been hacked and the person it actually belonged to barely spoke english and wanted to know where all their gold went.

other than that, in my 8k hours of gameplay i’ve never gotten a precurser drop

Only one, torch from mistic forge by throwing some random stuff. Been playing for 3k hours.

The Legend dropped for me during the Escape From LA event. I don’t know what dropped it though. I found it in my bags after a run. I held it for few days then sold it on the TP for about it’s going price of 650g at the time. Two weeks later it doubled in price…

Mine was a combo platter..
I’ve put i about 3000 hours since launch and have gotten maybe 25 exotic drops. I was born under a bad RNG.
That said – In the wildest bit of kitten-in-my-pants-luck, Spark dropped for me from a Silverwastes embroidered champ bag, 4 days ago. I then sold it on the TP and bought the precursor i wanted. A few more clovers and i will have my first and probably only legendary.

Got both the warhorn and rifle precursors from those green junk bags, both times while waiting for Teq to spawn. I also did buy the longbow pre off the TP as well.

I got The Legend through EotM, and I forked up the money to buy Storm and Dusk.

I can say where I didn’t get mine, from rng.
