Q:

… that if Nexon gets a majority of the shares of NCSoft, GW2 will become Pay-to-win?

While yes I haven’t played every game Nexon has PUBLISHED (YES PUBLISHED NOT DEVELOPED!) I have played a couple, those being Mabinogi: A Fantasy Life, and Vindictus, and from what I’ve seen of both of their cash shop NOTHING in either had the use to be major stat increases over other players, they were either for cosmetic changes, either from insanely random dyes or cosmetic armor/weapons, pets/mounts that would either give stat boosts for 1-2 minutes that would decrease the longer the pet/mount has been on the account. Hell the pets even had daily timers for how long you could play as them or have their AI help you when you go soloing.

So I ask again where the kitten is the idea that being owned by Nexon means it becomes pay to win comes from?

Bad experiences, cautious consumerism and better examples of gaming companies and publishers that don’t cause both of the aforementioned.

Their reputation is something that haunts them, and rightfully so.

“you reap what you sow”

And so they can plant the seeds of positive and responsible publishing and development and enjoy the turnaround, or descend into obscurity after they push the envelope too far and end up alienating their consumer base entirely.

Irony…. xD

I am unfamiliar with Nexon to make any specific comments on their strategy post acquiring NCSoft shares. But I gathered from other posters that Nexon has a past notorious history in managing those games under them.

The general comment that I wish to make is this. It applies to Nexon and any other companies. That if you pissed off your customers just to make a quick profit thinking that you will do better later to win back your customers’ goodwill later on, you are dead wrong. Bad impression lingers for a long long time. Human minds are biased towards highlighting negative aspects of thing while silently appreciative of the positive aspects. You can do a thousand good things and people will be quietly supporting you but if you do one, just one, wrong thing, or one that is perceived wrong through leak of proper communication, people will talk about this for many years to come.

I guess this is the case for Nexon here. The perception is what Nexon WILL do instead of what they actually do. The bad after taste lingers.

You haven’t played Vindictus for a very long time have you? You basically pay to upgrade your weapons to the max they can go without, heck, you can even buy weapons with money you spend in the cash shop. Though Vindictus by all means is mainly just a PvE games, I really wouldn’t consider small arena types a mainstream PvP. They’re fun to kill time though, that’s for sure.

Personally, I’m not sure where people get the idea Nexon means “Pay to Win” either, though, no games are worth even touching of Nexon, the only one worth it WAS Vindictus, which now is just simply boring running from dungeon to dungeon, and even though all games get repetitive, Vindictus did it pretty quick.

With the way they released characters and set up there game your right. Played beta when it was just Lann and Fiona, then tried out Evie when she was available at launch. Then two to three months later tried Korak when they finally released him, then stop because i didnt want to rerun the same boring dungeons AGAIN to level that guy, and they waited half a year in america from when the Kai teaser was shown… ALL CHARACTERS SHOULD BE AVAILABLE AT LAUNCH!….
But that aside the people we should really be worried about if they ever try to buy out NCsoft is a company called Gala-Net. Most of their games, developed or licensed ARE pay-to-win. One good example is the russian WoW clone, Allods, a game only pvp servers that right when they released a new map to play on released a combat mount that could a majority of a max level group at the time and had an area shield that absorbed 70% of the damage you tried to do. And said mount only came from having 10 tokens from an rng cash shop item.
