Hello! I’m a relatively new player to Guild Wars 2 and I was wondering which race and profession is most related and powerful to magic. My goal is to create a purely magic only character and I wanted your opinions. So basically I would like to know what are the professions that involve magic and which are most powerful. Thanks

Hmm… I’ve used an elementalist before and found it incredibly weak. Also which race supports magic the most?

If you came here with the mentality of other games’ mages, you’re going to be disappointed. No big numbers/squishy mages on here. Elementalist is probably the most effective as a melee-mage with 2 daggers. Mesmer mostly uses conditions/clones so no huge magic damage numbers there either.

glass canon elementalist with a staff could be viable in WvW when you’re AoEing off of secure places, but in PVE everything moves out of your AoE areas more than half of the time making it kind of useless.

Race doesn’t matter much, as there are not stats involved. Maybe some racial elite is more “magic” than others, I don’t know.
Elementalist is the most related class to magic. Others are Necromancer and Mesmer. All three count to the mage archetype.

Dagger/dagger elementalists are actually considered one of the best builds in PVP right now, I believe. And I know that they’re awesome in dungeons due to their handy combo fields and damage output. They’re painful to level early on, but it’s a very different story once you get past 40 or so. Mesmer and necromancer can be good options too, of course. It all depends on what you want to do with them. What do you want to do, by the way? Dungeons? WvW? sPVP? And what type of characters have you enjoyed in other games? We could advise you better if we knew.

As for racial choices. . . magical or not, very few of the racial skills are worth using over class ones, and those that do see use are for very specific builds or situations. The human racials are magic based (although it’s more “divine” than “arcane”) and fairly strong, for racials, so that might be a good place to start. Sylvari racials are themed around plant-control magic, although they aren’t quite as useful all around. And Norn can shapeshift, which is good for a sprint ability but not much else. Charr and asura racials are technology themed rather than magic themed, not that they couldn’t have their uses for a magic-based class. Lore-wise, pretty much any race makes sense with any class.

Ele deals tremendous amount of damage with the right spec.
Right now it’s the flavor of the month with the D/D spike build, and staff is great for massive AoE damage – and it’s pretty easy to deal said burst (it’s a rotation).

A good portion of people haven’t gotten to understand the class yet (they think fireball spamming or hitting random skills while swapping attunements at random = playing Ele correctly) so you will hear it’s weak, but go check youtube videos.
You will not be disappointed with Ele.

I don’t play Ele myself but I find it the most challenging opponent if the player knows the trick.

I think the most “magic” racial skills are human/norn or sylvari. Asura and charr are all about their guns and gadgets and golems and stuff.

Don’t disturb me, I have a cat in me at the moment.

Except literally everything the Asura make and do is fueled by magic. No other race tends to use magic for literally everything.

Golems are magical in nature in every way, not science, at all. Asura gates use magic. Glyphic weapons use magic to cut. Every other race relies on various degrees of standard tech except them and the sylvari, with the asura relying on magitech, and the sylvari relying on… well, Magitwig.

Mesmer. It wins because you make 3 of yourself in every fight. That’s 4x more powerful than any other class right there.
