Which class for my friend and I?? (BRAND NEW)
In all honesty when it comes to playing a certain role, that’s near non existent in GW2. But when it comes to dealing heavy damage, I’ve noticed Ranger is a pretty good option (its my favorite) along with Thieves as well. And support is more of a Guardian thing in my experience. The truth is to just play what you feel like trying and see how it works out for you and your friend. Each profession is played differently and its always a new and fun experience to try things out.
Before someone else steps in and says this there is no hunter in GW2 it is Ranger. Not trying to be snarky but someone was going to say it eventually.
As to your request it sounds like your friend might like Guardian for support and you Thief or Ranger. There is no trinity in this game so every profession can do a bit of everything depending on your build.

Healer/Support: Bunker Guardian, Staff Elementalist
Illusive/nimble non-magic DPS dealers: Ranger/Thief/certain Warrior builds

Two posts saying the same thing. Looks like you should give ranger a try and your friend a guardian
There’s really no class that is overpopular in terms of preventing you from finding a group for anything.
For support/healer, I’d say Guardian primarily since you can run a full damage melee build and still bring more defensive support than most other classes can in full support gear. However, if they don’t like melee, then Elementalist is your best bet.
For you, I’d say that Thief or Ranger are best if you want a ranged character. Rangers actually tend to be best suited as melee in PvE dungeon groups if you want to follow the meta builds, but they also do fine with a longbow. In PvP, they do great as ranged snipers. Thieves are pretty much always best melee, but they are the pinnacle of the nimble high dps class.
Hope that helps. Also, welcome to GW2!
Ok.. Sounds pretty good, thanks for the replies, excited to get going. I think I might go Thief, or Ranger, my friend will go gaurdian for sure after some research and your replies.. My on the other hand I’m still up in the air deciding Ranger or Thief.
I like ranged stuff for sure, but could care less about a pet or not. and I feel there will be many many rangers running around. I like a little uniqueness As long as thief has no magic, I HATE MAGIC stuff, lol
thanks again

I don’t think you will run into any problems with numbers of players playing the same profession, Ranger or Thief. Warrior is the profession you will see the most of. If you want to be more unique there is Mesmer. Mesmer has okay range with greatsword and fairly good melee. You do depend a lot on illusions and phantasms which you might determine as magic. I main a Mesmer and love it. It is a very fun class with a lot of tricks for almost any situation. Some say it is difficult to level up though because they are rather dependent on traits which are harder to come by these days.

does it matter what race you are? do some have advantages over others

Not really. The only difference with race is the first part of the personal story, appearance and racial elite skills. The general consensus is that racial elite skills are mostly worthless anyway so mostly it is all about how you want to look and the first part of the personal story. Some advice, Norn and Charr appear to run slower due to size even though the speed is exactly the same as other races. It is just a visual effect that can make them seem slower. Also they can be more difficult to deal with in jumping puzzles due to size and some camera angles. Lastly, Charr armor seems to clip a lot, that is a common complaint.

should me and my friend be the same race or would it be ok to be different races?
I think if we’re the same race, we start off in same area, and same story ?
We’re gonna be the same race Bomkata!! now stop!

Yes if you are the same race you start in the same racial area. However that is not required. Once you complete the intro mission you can go to your race’s home city, take the port to Lion’s Arch and then go to the main city and starter area of any other race.
Do you play PvE or PvP? These two are completely separate in GW2.
For PvE: If you spec 100% healer you will have an extremely hard time looking for dungeon groups. If you want to faceroll everything all the time, roll double guardian, equip greatswords, profit.
For PvP you are upleveled to 80 right away. The playstyles you are describing, you are looking for Shoutbow Warrior + Power Ranger, www.metabattle.com.
Since you and your friend seem to have a lot of questions I suggest you read this thread while you are downloading;
