Which class loves the sword most?
- Your possible choices: mesmer/warrior/guardian
- Which would most use it in an optimal build: mesmer/guardian
- Which is it most ‘fun’ and unique to use sword: probably warrior. because u can equip sword both mainhand and offhand, both with completely different mechanics. Sword mainhand i use mainly for running, leap is good mobility. offhand is great for blocks and to ‘rip’ ur foe.
I can’t speak about ranger sword since I have no experience with the class. They might be counted also but I don’t know their mechanics.

Mesmer is great with sword, and is used in many builds, and sword off-hand is also good, so you can dual wield and actually be effective.
Warrior is also good with swords, but is more used in condition builds, but also works in power build, sword off-hand is pretty much a control/condition weapon.
Guardian isn’t that good with swords, sure there are builds that use it but the other weapons are more effective.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)
Havent even considered Rangers?
Their sword has a very stylish auto with jumps and acrobatik stuff like that, the other skill are moving evades so they have a very dynamic and you might want to say complex sword style.
Full melee Ranger since August 2012
Neither are considered “playing it right” but I enjoy sword/dagger on my ranger even tho the sword autoattack makes dodging hard. With 2 evades and skill 2 I don’t run into terrible trouble though. The Ranger autoattack animation is just fun to watch as well.
I use sword/sword on my wars a lot, torment is decent damage particularly as a pull with offhand sword to get the movement damage bonus, and I like the looks. I use the short Lionguard swords or Honor of Humanity.
I am sick of GS and refuse to use them on war or ranger, its enough my mes and guard have them. (and this is why I solo)

Since this is the General Forum, I assume you’re talking PvE?
If that’s the case, then the classes that benefit the most are guardian, mesmer, and ranger simply because it is their best weapon. Despite the fact that you like “complex and dynamic combat,” you might not like ranger sword dues to how unique it is, but on the other hand groups will love you.
I think the 1h sword is best utilized by the mesmer. Without it burst mesmer wouldn’t exist.
Oh wow I can’t believe I totally forgot about the ranger! oops. Well, I went and tried playing sword ranger for a while and it is interesting for sure. coupled with the shortbow I think I could have a fair bit of fun with that.
However.. I know I will be getting the legendary Bolt. Defs my favorite legendary, and I’m about half way there already. Like I said before, I’m a bit of a roleplayer, so Bolt has to fit at least a little bit with the class and I dont really feel like a lightning sword would fit with a ranger. Guardian and mesmer seem like the best fit in that department.
I will be doing PvE a fair bit with this class, but I think I will be spending more time with it in “big” content such as WvW, dungeons, etc. If I was doing nothing but PvE I’d make up a condi fire guardian, but unfortunately I dont think that kind of build would do very well in WvW or dungeons. As you guys have mentioned, I feel like if I went with a guardian I wouldn’t be using the sword all that much. Sounds like the mesmer would get the most use of a sword in organized “big” playing, am I right?
MH sword is a strong DPS weapon for a guardian, with some good defense mixed in. It’s also very strong as condition or hybrid spec as a Warrior. Mesmer’s are primarily casters, with only the autoattack being very sword-ey. They are effective though, thats for sure.
Play those 3 up to 10 ish and see what you like most. Stay away from Ranger. It’s 1h sword is more dangerous to the user then the target, since it’s constant leap chain prevents you from dodging on demand.
edit: I totally forgot thief: They have MH sword access as well. Can’t comment about playing one, I don’t have a thief.

Guardian and mesmer are great sword users.

^this. pick which ever one of these 2 you like the most, and you can’t go wrong. Sword is fantastic for both of them.

This opinion is wrong… Guardian sword has one of the best auto attacks for the class in terms of damage, has a teleport blinding skill, and a somewhat situational ranged attack that blocks specific sorts of attacks too. Paired with focus its actually part of the “meta” dps guardian build for pve/dungeons (focus brings more blinds and blocks). Usually either GS or hammer as the alt set (hammer in fractals, GS everywhere else).
Mesmer’s best pve weapon is sword mainhand, the other main hand/2 hand options suck so your pve default load out is going to be sword main then any two of these as your main and swap choices: focus, pistol, sword. Which two depends on where you are and personal preference.
I don’t recomend warriors for swords if you are going to be primarily pve/dungeons, the meta there is axe/mace + GS. Sword is more of an option in pvp game modes.
^ Guardian sword would be my pick. Not sure what weapons Belzebu is talking about that are more effective, but I can assure you, he is wrong.
GS whirl is solid burst with utility of pull that is useful in most parties. That said, you pretty much will be on sword fairly often.

In some dungeon paths there is viability to sword offhand. TA is the best example I’d say.
