How am I limiting myself? I want a ranger single target DPS that doesn’t look horrible.

First, i wish people would stop thinking that entire classes are or should be pigeon-holed into “melee” or “ranged” roles. That’s a distinction of builds in this game, not one of classes (as it should be). The latter is an incredibly stupid paradigm, fostered by WoW with its wretched class design philosophies.

There is no class in the game that can’t function at range, though engineer, elementalist, and ranger specialize in it slightly more than other classes. The warrior and the thief are both good ‘ranged’ classes as well, as are the mesmer and necromancer.

There is also no class that specializes in single-target or aoe damage, though elementalist is slightly more about it than the others. The warrior with a rifle is also a fantastic for single-target ranged DPS. Thief with pistols is designed for this, but the skill set is currently a little below average. Thieves have great utility though. Mesmers are also a good choice.

every class except engineers has a ranged and melee abilities

medium armors pretty much ONLY have trench coats, so thief, engineer and ranger are out

light armors have more of a robe appearance, i’m not sure if your into that, the light armor users are elementalist, which has alot of ranged aoe, mesmers who have alot of support and cc attacks, and the necromancer who has a ton of pets and condition damage skills

finally you have the heavy armor users which are primarily melee based, but they do have ranged weapons, the warrior can use a bow and a rifle, and the guardian can use a staff and scepter, warriors are more offensive and guardians are defensive

heavy armor is basicly things like plate armor, basicly armor with lots of metal plating

Gwaiyn – 80 Thief
Ryfaul – 80 Warrior
Fluene – 80 Mesmer

Believe it or not warriors fit the bill for you. They have strong single target ranged dps (the rifle can really hurt) and there’s all kinds of neat heavy armor looks.

and no trench coats I don’t think.

I’m still having trouble picking a class as well. I think my problem is that I have gotten used to playing games with 30hotkeys, macros, stance dancing. I find the amount of skills boring in gw2. Thats the only flaw that I cannot seem to get past. It seems to make the professions less complex then previous games. Sad because this game has so much going for it and my only problem is with the tool I’d be using to play.

Try an elementalist.

I want single target ranged dps not aoe, and it seems necro and ele both are aoe.

While there are no trench coats, I haven’t seen a single armour that is BUYABLE that looks decent IMO.

if you don’t like the heavy armor styles, and if appearance REALLY affects your gameplay that much, the best i can offer you is be a ranger/engineer (or whatever class you enjoy), find one single outfit that you really like and just stick with that outfit from level 1 to 80

the human tier 1 cultural armor isn’t a trench coat btw, there’s a few other medium armors that don’t have that trench coat style

Gwaiyn – 80 Thief
Ryfaul – 80 Warrior
Fluene – 80 Mesmer

Just gonna throw this in there, but engineers have a utility skill called “Tool Kit” that does give them a set of melee skills, just an fyi…

i guess i’m wrong, every class can go melee, i haven’t played an engineer, i just saw that they don’t get any melee weapons but i suppose they have their own special set of weapons

he was looking for a ranged class regardless and engineer is primarily ranged

o, i wasn’t trying to defend myself or imply that you were being rude or anything, it was just me admitting i was wrong

in fact shenzo, you actually gave me a reason to level my engineer now, i was debating on whether i should remake my engineer and turn it into a warrior just because of the sole fact that i thought it didn’t have any melee abilities, but now that i know about the tool kit, that was all the reason i needed to keep playing it

anyhow, back on topic, the white medium armor isn’t a trench coat either

go to youtube. type in class names + gw2. figure it out.

not trying to be jerkish about it, but honestly, seeing the classes in action is going to be 100x better than anything someone posts.

Let me rephrase then , I don’t want a coat, PERIOD. It’s ridiculous that 90% of the medium armours are coats.

I’ve gotten several “different” looking armor pieces from either story quests or karma vendors. For instance my warrior is wearing a karma chest-piece from the Cursed Shore Melandru Temple vendor that looks great, and my thief is wearing a studded coat that is waist length in front (with coat-tails only on the sides and rear) that I got from a 30-40 ish story quest and will be transforming stats onto as I go. I always preview the armor pieces at Karma vendors, as I never know what I might find.

As far as single target DPS, rifle warrior with Precision spec or ranger short bow with a condition spec.

Then you’ve gotten your answer about a dozen or so post ago, play a Rifle warrior all your life and you’ll never need to see a silly coat/ coatish robe on yourself. If you want the most sexy well fit armor then roll a Human Warrior since they never seem to have any issue with armor clipping and such.

So you want ranged?

So you want awesome single target dps?

So you say no trench coats?

Warrior with a rifle (with norn cultural armor t1 or t2).
