Im a returning player and was thinking about roling a new character to get me back in the swing of things.
Ive done warrior, mesmer and elementalist. Out of those id say mesmer was the most fun to play as (mostly PvE), warrior is definitly the easiest and most practical (in my opinion) for dungeons and other endgame stuff like that. Im thinking of roling a thieve next, opionions?

I can’t tell you what you like most. Play whatever you think is fun.
When you got the feeling you’ve chosen the wrong one, roll another until you find the right one.

I rolled one of each profession and found the Engineer and Ranger the most fun to play (Engie was a bit slow to start until around level 30-ish though). Mesmers are quite fun too but again not until around level 30-ish. Guardians are decent, I have 2 (rolled a second one to get the Charr PS achieve) and don’t think I’ve ever died on either of them

Necro is my old faithful probably due to my stubbornness and since it was my main in GW has the lions share of my play time.

Elementalists are just garbage to me, I got one to 80 but they without a shadow of a doubt are the least fun profession by a coutry mile. Warriors were quite boring too and felt like chore.

Edit. Forgot about Thief, one thing you might want to take into consideration is race. I found my human, sylvari and asuran thieves boring and ended up retiring them. When I rolled a Norn one I found it much more fun for some reason. This has happened with a few professions, race really makes a difference to professions for me.

Like Meryn said, it’s difficult for us to say what you would like without knowing you.

It all depends on your playstyle. Do you like evasive combat, ranged combat, supportive builds, high damage or tanky builds?

I am assuming from your post that you mainly play PvE? If so, and you wish to try the thief, then I would say give it a go and see. Take it to the mists to test skills and builds against the NPC’s there, and if you don’t like the feel of it then try something else.

Also, do not just try one build and say it doesn’t fit. Many professions have a variety of playstyles available to them, so play about with stats and skills in a variety of different ways before writing off a profession.

Personally, I love the thief and it is my favourite character by far. I love it’s mobile feel and it’s evasive playstyle. But that’s just me.

Also, if you like a ranged evasive playstyle you may also like the engineer. The engineer is my second favourite profession. I just love the way you can combine toolbelt and weapon skills.

Each person is different, I love ranger, guardian, and my ele. I think it has a lot to do with your main from GW if you had one.

it’s a matter of taste and playstyle. I detest the mesmers, they’re so boring I might as well sleep at the keyboard. I like the ele, thief and ranger a lot, and I have a suspicion that the engi migth be fun, but mine is still only l20 so I haven’t gotten the hang of all the mechanics just yet.

btt: as for me the Mesmer is definitly the funnies class to play, but has a terrible start tought … until 40
Engineer is also a lot of fun, aswell Thief! The ranger seems funny too, but a bit simpler than the others. Ele is ok aswell Guard. Necro and Warrior are boring.

I like to move around alot when i play, i have a char warrior with rifle/gs and i find myself playing more with the rifle and and running around alot. Im really looking for a character which moves quickly. Im sick of playing with chars and norns which move so slowly and asura are just too small. I liked mesmer because of the cool animations for the attacks and the fact that i didnt like just constantly spamming one attack would be enough to defeat an enemie as i do with warrior because they are pretty overpowered. Story doesnt matter too much to me as il be dipping in and out and not really paying much attention to it. What i really want is a character who is fun to play solo but will be an asset to a group in dungeons, PvE and a but of WvWvW too.
I know its difficult to know what i personally would like but id like to know what other people find fun to play so i have a few options to try and see if i like them

I have all 8 classes, but only 4 level 80s, so YMMV.
Guardian is the easiest to play, and pretty fun.
Warrior is good fun, but simple.
Necro and Ele are not much fun, IMO.
Ranger is fun in PvE, but terrible in WvW.
Engineer is a blast – use an asura for extra giggles.
Thief is very fun but risky, i.e. requires most concentration. A good mix of range and melee, however.
Mesmer is my least played and I haven’t got a good feel for it yet.

I heard thieves have very poor survivability, why is ranger bad at WvW?
I started roling an engineer when the game first came out last year and they were really poor all round, have they made the engineer better?

Engineers take a bit of getting used to, and IMO, don’t really get interesting until about level 40. But then, wow, do they get interesting! They’re very versatile, can be traited for perma-swiftness, can be specced for DPS or condition damage and are generally engaging to play. I find I can’t snooze at the wheel while playing my Engi.

Same, I hear, goes for Mesmer, but I can’t get to level 40 to find out, as I just find them far too slow. Their in-combat movement is great, but just running around the open world with them is pretty painful for me.

Re playing a Thief – if you know how to dodge well, then you should be fine. They’re pretty squishy until at least level 40 or higher, and if dodging is tricky then be prepared to die a lot (it’s why I no longer play a Thief, despite getting to level 35 on one). They have good movement, stealth and are quite fun, I guess, but I find their lack of available weapon choices a little limiting.

Thief is wicked in WvW, ranger is a bit squishy for WvW but that’s also the player. I play my ranger in WvW I win some I die some. I play with a sword/dagger combo in WvW while fighting groups and I use my bow to take down towers and keeps.

Lots of people don’t like ranger, I dunno why. I dun care why I have every class 5 of them are lvl 80. I hate engi… Not sure why I also hate warrior.
