Which starting zone did you dislike the most?
Sylvari.. Just hate the artwork in the region.. Its like a 2 yr olds version of a fantasy jungle.

…..Ouch, that cut me deep
Depends, are we talking about my favorite
Landscape: Sylvari
Quests: Norn
Population: Queensdale
Humor: Asura
really, the only one I don’t like is Charr, even though it’s the richest in lore.
I can honestly say I don’t hate any of the starting zones as they’re so different from each other and very unique in their own right. Although a bit off-topic, when it comes to races, I tend to lean toward humans. I have all the races except the Asura, but that will be my next character….an Engineer I think.
I don’t like the boring endless snowy areas in Norn territory really that much. I completed them on my Norn. On my other toons I just do them if I want something I can’t get anywhere else (Jotun greatsword and tailor recipes for the shadow set come to mind, both in Snowden Drifts which looks very much like the Norn starting area itself). If I want a raw, alpine environment I prefer to play Skyrim instead, which just looks better.
The Sylvari area ain’t my favourite either. It looks great, but I found it a boring area to complete. Asura is slightly better, mainly because of the humorous Asuran experiments you encounter there.
The two areas I could do over and over again are Charr (my all-time fav) and Human (humans are wussies but their areas look great and are nice to play).
Sylvari, its not a funny area and its not cool looking.
The best area for me is the charr starting zone.
It doesn’t suck your life away and force you onto a grinding treadmill"
LOL
Asuran’s Starting zone is really depressing.
I love the Norn starting zone though.
I think the guy that broke it down like this had it right…here are my answers:
I dislike the most…
Landscape: Sylvari (not that it isnt pretty, but I think there are way too many obstacles in your path)
Quests: Asura
Population: Charr
Humor: Human
Posted my answers..and I would say the Norn area takes the cake once you reach the snowy portion of the zone. The “highland” mountainy area is really really nice, one of my favorites until we have to venture north to the snowy portion. Hate it.
I do not like much the Charr and human … I find his lack of trees … it lacks something, it’s like this: there password or man or charr, nothing lives.
There is something missing in the area of living human and Charr.
I like the Norn, Human and Charr starter zones. I actually I love all the Charr zones
I dislike the Sylvari in general and have never finished their zone, after 5 min of hearing “all things have a right to grow” I want to punch someone, so I leave.
Haven’t played the Asura area much either since I don’t like the quests- but that may be because I play humans and the whole crazy scientist thing that the Asuras have just work on my nerves. Especially since the outcome of any Asura experiment is pretty predictable.
I think the Asura experiments are fun but NPC’s could definitely be a bit less repetitive…
“Any plan that involves raptors is, by design, foolproof. I’m an unmitigated genius!” I’ve heard it a million times now.
Sylvari area is my absolute favourite because of the vibrant colours, the fact that has jungles, swamps, a massive relaxing beach, morgans spiral and loads of imaginative curly forest. Also Love the Pale tree, I would ive there in real life if I could.
Least favourite would have to the charr and norn area. The norn area has much more fun quests and the NPCs are so down to earth but the landscape oh my god….. snow… endless… white.. snow… and snow and more snow and another pile of snow, and a mountain with snow on….. I disliked the snowy areas in GW1, then having spent a long time playing Skyrim I got even more bored of snow. The charr area is more diverse but I just clash majorly with charr personality, they put no thought into anything, everything they say has no depth to it, and their constant battle with the ghosts of ascalon goes nowhere slowly. Why don’t they come up with a new idea or put some thought into that battle instead of, “well they keep reswpening so we’ll keep killing them….”That grates on me so much. The look of their area is pleasent though apart from the bits where the charr have built stuff.
all starting area’s i’ve seen (all but the asura) are decent enough, but there’s obviously badly designed aspects like the crafting tables being disabled due to a semi spammed event that takes up to 20 minutes at a time to complete.
It’s obviously faster to just go to lions arch via the mists and to another starting area lol.
Least favourite starting zone: Queensdale
Favourite starting zone: Plains of Ashford
It’s all about personal taste … good that the answers are so diverse, it speaks well of the overall design.
Piken Square
My least favorite is Sylvari. Did it once, won’t do it again.
My most favorite is Asura. Their home town is comfortably designed, the starting zone has a lot of humor in it, quests look different enough (some charr and norn zones have a copy/ paste requirements on quests only a few steps apart), overall it’s just a really pleasant zone.
Human starting area is my most favourite. Followed by the Norn one.
Sylvari and Charr starting areas are probably my least favourite for different reasons.
None of them is extremely attractive. Unlike GW1, Anet ran these entry’s as a :
“Toss em in and let em figger it out” rather than as a “true” intro to game mechanics.
At least the Sylvari entry occurred in a confined, and well-defined, setting. For the rest, you’re just dumped in the world———and good luck!
Asura, a thousand times over.
None will ever compare to presearing
This^
Yet I like Sylvari the most for all its materials that can mined/cut/harvested from it(you can stay there all day and have stacks of each tier 1 material)!
I hate the norn region for a passion. Nothing but snow as far as the eye can see!
I disliked the Norn area the most. Sure first I was omg wow! Beautiful but all the snow quickly became blend and boring Same with Asura, you are wide eyes first then it’s just same old. Human area was not impressive but at the same time exactly what I was expecting human lands to be, and easy to naviguate too! An enjoyable area to quest for sure.
My favorite is a hard one, Sylvari is over the top in terms of vibrant color and overgrown everything but there are some breathtaking little nook and crannies where you just have to take a screenshot, especially at night! You have to find them hehe. It felt that at every corner the forest was taking a new style.
The Charr who starts boring slowly changed into amazing landscapes with warm colors who reminded me 100% of GW1. I wanted to climb everywhere to enjoy the views… and nostalgia
So a tie between Sylvari and Charr.
I think there’s more and better-connected events in Human, Charr, and Norn. To me, from a design point of view, Sylvari and Asura feel like “rough drafts” rushed out the door.
Charr suffered from broken skill challenges and DEs, but the story and themes are the most Tyrian.
I dislike the Charr areas the most, as a person who joined the series with prophecies I felt it was insulting and disgusting, doesn’t help that Charrs are mary sues.
Queensdale. You don’t get enough xp to get to level 15. The hearts are generally cheesy. The other starting areas are much more fun, imo.
none, the pve map is cute i must admit
All the zones have pieces of the lore of Tyria. I like them all.
The norn zone is the only one that I enjoy
None will ever compare to presearing
got that right.
i don’t care much for the sylvari and ausra zones, favorites are human and norn.
Favourite: Norn I found the quests over all much more fun.
Least Fave: Charr many quests were tedious and I did not like the area much at all.
None will ever compare to presearing
And none is worse than Istan. The quest chains on that island never end :|
dislike the norn’s area (hate is too strong a word, i reserve that word for a company who shall not be named), i like the charr as previously stated is rich in lore but every region looks like trash imo apart from parts of queensdale.
My least favorite is the Asura. Everything else was great imo.
