This question popped up in the Kickstarter thread and I was hoping Gaile or somebody else could tell us. If ANet owns GW2, do they also own GW1?

It says ©2010–2013 ArenaNet, LLC. and NC Interactive, LLC. Not only is this info four years old, it lists two companies as the copyright holder. Not just one. The rest is just trademark/logo stuff.

This does not give any real specifics. It just says it’s a subsidiary of NCSoft, and for all we know, ANet may have a special agreement with them. It definitely wouldn’t be unheard of.

This sort of thing is probably about as good as you’re going to get. They’re not going to come to the forum to spell out who exactly owns what and the percents of ownerships of the products.

Well, right now it doesn’t make any difference at all. But it WILL make all the difference if there is a schism between ANet and NCSoft and ANet wants to pull away with GW in tow.

NcSoft owns Arenanet and has since before Guild Wars 1 launched. Anet creates and publishes Guild Wars 2.

Only to a WvW player thats really into PvE.

As I understand it the short version is that Arenanet owns the rights to the Guild Wars franchise (which covers both games) and the games themselves, but NCSoft owns Arenanet.

So if Arenanet did ever break away from NCSoft they’d be able to take Guild Wars with them. But that’s highly unlikely to ever happen because at the moment they’re sort-of the same company – it’d be like expecting the art department of Arenanet to break away and start their own studio.
