I just started playing the game abouth a month ago and got into TP flipping maybe a week ago. (bought 100g with gems to get started). So far the profits are great (but the time invested is much higher than i hoped for).

Significant part of my profits are items i dont really understand why would anyone buy, like weapons and armour for low level characters, mid tear crafting mats and bags etc. Leveling is fast and items you get along the way are more than enough to just plow trough content so i really dont see why would anyone buy that stuff.

Weapons and armor for low level characters: Alts, or people buying blues/greens to salvage for Luck.

Mid tier crafting mats: Some are needed for Ascended crafting; others are needed by people who are leveling their crafting so they can make Ascended.

Mid-tier bags: new players who cannot afford bigger bags?

Mid tier crafting mats are very valuable, much more so than higher tier mats. Low level gear can be salvaged for those same mats (linen being the most valuable) and the lower level bags will drop them. They probably want them to craft ascended gear or to quickly level a char through crafting.

Eh those mid tear mats… crafting ascended is a real pain because of them… (in particular cloth and leather) especially if you’ve got a bunch of 80s and no low level chars.

But all that stuff you mentioned requires a significant amount of items/mats, especially salvaging for luck, some MF/salvaging gambles etc. Why would anyone buy that stuff from me and not just place their own buy orders? No one is that lazy. I can understand that someone who needs small amounts of something buys directly but when you are on a big project placing your own buy orders will save you ton of money.

Everyone values money differently. That is especially true if it is virtual money.

That is the whole reason why there is such a huge gap between buy order and sell order. If it is real money, the gap will be much closer.

Dont completely agree, virtual money and real money both require some time invested to earn. If you save time placing orders (and it is significant amount of time to gather gold for something like maxing Luck) i dont really see why whould anyone buy from me and pay my markup.

Even if you get all the gold from gems (real money) its still probably worth it to you to place your own buy orders, and if you are really swimming in cash why buy mats for legendaries or waste all that time clicking to salvage, just buy the finished product.

I played a lot of Eve online and in that game market was not centrailized, every station had its own trading post. Also taxes and broker fees were not fixed like in GW2 but tied to skills and relations with corporation holding the station so it made sense. In this game i just dont get it.

As someone who has never placed one of my own buy orders in over 2 years playing this game, I can fully understand why someone would just buy/sell directly. If I was going to buy/sell something very valuable, a legendary even, I would not place my own buy/sell order. I would just sell to highest bidder/buy from lowest seller because you get the item right then. I am extremely impatient with that because I do not want to wait to get what I want, I bought it so I want it right then. If there are a significant number of people who share my views, it is likely they are the ones who are buying from you at high prices.

Most people are not good with money. The thought never even crosses their mind to place a buy order. They see it, they want it, they want it now. That is the thinking of ~90% of the players. Why do you think playing the Tp works at all? If even 10% of the players in the game did what you were doing there would be no profit. It works precisely because most people are in fact that lazy.

Human nature and modern culture are pretty much the opposite of what you think they are.
