I cannot state just how much I want to buy the permanent airship captain’s pass, but since I’m still waiting to get paid for this month, I don’t have any money at the moment to buy it, and by the time I get paid, it will be gone.

What’s the point of single day sales anet? Seriously? All it does is reduce sales from those people who would like to buy it but can’t at this very instant.

I honestly would like to know what reasoning the marketing team uses to justify 1 day sales

They’ll probably release them again during the game’s anniversary sale, but I understand where you’re coming from. Gem prices soared when the wings were put up for sale.

Scarcity is the fundamental economic problem of having seemingly unlimited human wants in a world of limited resources.

It is more likely that you will borrow money from someone you know or take debt in bank in order to buy your product.

They think that their products are so good that you will do that.
Their economic advisor thinks that with scarcity they will earn tons of $$$$$

So sad, guess you’ll just have to keep accessing all of those services for free in LA.

Also if you’re waiting for your pay check to get something worth $12, you might want to reconsider frivolous cash shop purchases.

it promotes panic buys and makes people rush out to get gems where they normally would not, pretty common sales tactic especially with digital goods

Bottom line is that one of the primary metrics they show investors is the number of logins per day (one of the reasons for the daily login gifts). One day sales contribute to the daily login metric.

It’s always been something that frustrates me. As a retailer of physical product, the only reason not to stock something will be down to space restrictions/buying restrictions or lack of popularity.

Online stores for games are virtual space and none of these restrictions are relevant. This is not a real world economy. Put an item in the store…keep it there. You may not get sales spikes, but you get better sales over a longer period as new players come into the game.

I will forever remain baffled by such decisions, even more so when these sales occur and you consider a majority of people tend to get paid at the end of a month..

I live at home with no bills to pay so my entire, relatively trivial income goes toward frivolous purchases.

I honestly don’t mind advertising a good product, the thing that irritates me is the pointlessly limited availability.

I honestly don’t mind advertising a good product, the thing that irritates me is the pointlessly limited availability.

As mentioned before, it’s a the psychological impact of faux scarcity.

Anet could put the permanent airship pass in the gem store permanently, and maybe sell a small amount of them at 1000gems, or they can sell a bunch of them at 1000gems in a 1 day sale because it forces users to make a snap decision (which leads to more people coughing up the cash for gems).

Otherwise the rate of 1000gems is too high.

Arenanet is very underhanded with their gemstore. They will use any psychological tactics they can get their hands on in order to push more sales through.

Not to mention that it is near the end of the month, so this 1 day sale suddenly showing up is probably a push to meet forecast numbers.

Where are my gem sales? I want gem sales! Nerf EVERYTHING!

Prevents people from having enough time to grind gold → gems i.e. increases the probability of people having to buy with real money.

Just buy gems when you have the money and wait for the perm Royal Terrace Pass to show up – after some airship changes Terrace is far superior.

They can sell their product for however long they wish to and they need not explain themselves in regards to their gemstore. There were many “promises” made and expectations had when we purchased this game, and as far as my memory serves me, control over the gemstore was not one of them.

That’s a bit of a inflexible. At the core you’re right, although I do feel that player are still entitled to provide feedback. ANet doesn’t have to listen of course, but I like to think they do and although we often get not so great feedback every now and then there’s something nice or novel.

Oh I have no doubt they’re listening now.

As others have listed, across several threads on this issue, there are advantages to hosting short term sales. There isn’t enough backlash from the community, yet, for them to backpedal on this new marketing stance.

Were you around when they decided it would be a brilliant idea if they flashed gemshop advertisements in bold yellow text IN GAME across the center of the screen? They listened then when the community raged at them for it and as a result I’ve not seen them do it again since. So — they listen. Until we give them reason to change their stance on this issue, I don’t see them changing. Because guess what? People ARE buying in mass on these one day items. If you could get the community as a whole to go on a gemstore strike of some sort, that may sway them, but I don’t see that level of cooperation among players ever happening.

Quite the opposite. The two days after the 24hour sale of the wings back piece should be more than enough evidence as to what the majority think about these 1 day sales.

As I’ve said before, while people may be vocal about such things on the forums, we are in the minority by a mind boggling amount.

The sales that they made on that day, and on the one day sales that followed, is enough evidence that one day sales work. People can rage all they want after the fact — but the sales can’t be denied.

scarcity is a proven working psychological device in sales. I can assure you they make a good buck from this. If such little expenses are draining your ressources that heavily, you are not an interesting customer anyway (no offense, but that is just the way things are).

I had been waiting on this item for months, and while checking the website during my lunch break at work today (as I do nearly every day) I was very happy to see it would be on sale again.
However by the time I got home from work the sale was already over.
Brilliant marketing strategy this -_-
If we only get the honor of giving you money for this item for 24 hours, could you at least let us know in time?

Sincerely,
A very disappointed player

Scarcity is the reason why buying digital things is economically unsound. If they don’t manufacture scarcity, they risk their economic models collapsing.

The reality is probably far from it, but they can’t apply their real world economics to a digital game without manufacturing real world scenarios. And one day sales make them kittenloads of money.

They did it with the permanent Airship Pass because;
A – It devalues the temporary pass, and-
B – The Airship is overpriced garbage, and wouldn’t sell remotely well without putting hardcore pressure on people.

That too.
I can accomplish the same exact thing for free anytime I want via wvw borderland or heart of the mists. And always return exactly where I was.
Even teleporting to Rata Sum and back is 1/1000th the cost of having access to the airship or the terrace or the even more useless home portal stone.
