For such a prevalent enemy, it seems to me that Risen are notably unsatisfying to fight. There are a great number of enemies in this game that seem to have more enjoyable combat. Centaurs, Inquest, even Dredge can be fun. But Risen seem to be numerous, colorless, meatshields

For one it’s not satisfying to have to beat away on mob enemies like this for ridiculous amounts of time. It’s fun to fight and kill large groups of weakish enemies. But these just seem to be weakish enemies with huge health bars. Fighting them is a long and not gratifying, and seems weirdly out of place among the other mobs in the game, with the exception of dungeon mobs (which are also unsatisfying bullet sponges, but have the advantage of being dangerous). It’s probably not just the health bars. I can’t imagine this is just me. For whatever reason the Risen combat just feels kind of meh. What do you think?

Well, they’re purposeless drones with little intelligence. It really just feels like filler fights between you and the boss because they really are just that.

I hate to agree, but once my story-mode was all about Orr and the risen, I just found myself dreading doing the missions.

There are lots of other risen “types” other than just the normal races though. You get to the level 70+ areas, and you fight risen sharks, skale, and other creatures-turned-undead. I think they just need to continue this variety among the undead, and have each race have a sort of signature move that requires the player to pay more attention instead of just stabbing away mindlessly at them.

I know what you mean. once I got to orr I really slowed down on the story. I can only stomach doing about one quest a day. Walk 5 feet, kill 300 risen, repeat

They move too fast, have to much health, are no real threat and serve no purpose other than to annoy. They are so good at it, I avoid Orr and most areas with Risen as much as possible. lol

Seriously, if Anet really wants to make End Game interesting, lower the respawn, aggro range and speed of these things. Like Sylvia said, walk 5 feet and kill 300 of them – it’s not difficult, it’s annoying.

I would go so far as to say, remove the loner Risen all over the place. Put them in preset groups so they are at least a challenge should we engage. If we are running around solo, then at least we can have some breathing room. And slow them down. They move so fast they look stupid as they waddle towards us. If the speed was to discourage simply running passed them… well, watch the trains following people. hehe

I wish Frostgorge was as good a place to endgame farm as Orr, because I really hate Orr and everything in it. The risen are seemingly designed to be as annoying and tedious as possible, and while Orr itself has a kinda neat underwater theme, overall the place just feels like a Quake 2 map. Ugly, difficult to navigate, and filled to the brim with colored lighting. Frostgorge, on the other hand, is pretty cool.

Because every day you’re surrounded by Risen.
This is just an excuse to smash their head with a spiked club.

Agreed. I spend a lot of time in Frostgorge. It doesn’t have a few of the high level crafting nodes (at least that I’ve found); but I’ve gotten several exotics there from the Jormag event… when it’s working.
Karma is a lot slower though. Not as many events there it seems. I’m hoping they add more there to make it more viable an alternative to Orr.
