Why bother having mesmer clones. Everyones pets seem to magically know which one is the real me and proceed to bleed me to death. My clones don’t know which image of another mesmer is real or which one is a clone…why do pets get to know this??

I think that is an incredibly unfair advantage to classes that have pets.

Not to mention that they can follow you to the end of the world.

I think the AI needs a huge overhaul for the pets including the clones.

They also need a bit of resistance to AOE damage just like the more permanent pets do across the board otherwise pet classes are a bit useless.

Maybe the pets have learned to look at the clones off hand if the Mesmer is dual wielding weapons… (Please fix this graphic issue A-net!)

But I totally agree with Tigirius on the AoE aspect and pets in general, necro pets, illusions, even the old ball and chain (rangers) could use a bit more resilience.

Mesmers mess up my turret networks so bad it isn’t even funny. I haven’t done sPVP with my minion necro in a bit, but I doubt they have improved as far as chasing mesmers go.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.

Well, I don’t know if Ranger pets always know which one the real Mesmer is. They should also attack clones and phantasms unless the Ranger tells them to attack the real one.

But the reason for why clones/phantasms do not always attack the real Mesmer is simple. You summon them on a target. If you summon them on a clone, then they attack that clone. If you summon them on the real Mesmer, they attack the real Mesmer. They can not change their target.

A ranger’s pet works in that it will be locked to a target by the ranger’s F1 command, however if that target stealths the pet will find a new target, until that player unstealths and will then follow the original target.

Weapon skills from a mesmer will follow the target, however the clone from dodge trait will place a clone at your feet when dodging which will then attack the nearest enemy to you. If you’ve dodged make sure you’re away of this fact as your clone may not be attacking your target.

With Rangers there are a few possible explanations:

1. You hit first. A Ranger pet (that is not set to passive) will attack any enemy that hits them or their owner, or is attacked by their owner. They should stay on this target unless it dies or disappears (ie. applies stealth or moves or teleports away), their owner orders them to do something else or they are downed. So if you hit them before summoning any clones and don’t do something to encourage them to switch they will stay focused on you.

2. The Ranger ordered them to target you. It’s not really that hard for human players to work out which is the real Mesmer. If you’ve got a choice of 4 targets, 3 standing still auto-attacking and one dodging, moving and using different skills it doesn’t take a genius to guess which one is being controlled by a human. Rangers can press F1 at any time to tell their pet to attack their target, and when you’re facing a Mesmer and an army of clones is exactly the time to use it.

I haven’t played a Necromancer enough to really know how their minions work, but I know my Engineers turrets will attack anything and everything and seem to switch targets at random.

Ranger pets are a nightmare in WvW, particularly for a stealth mesmer. If I’m targeted by 3 or 4 ranger pets I have to get into tower or keep because they just keep coming back after every stealth move.

The pets may have been given this ability to counter a thief, which is fair enough, but I want the same target following skill for my clones.

My posts are facts as I know them, or my own opinion, and do not represent any guild.

No they can’t, I have a Ranger and they’ll reset to me when the target is far enough.

Actually, i believe this was the result of the anti-stealth fix for mobs that was introduced some time ago. Yes, it was aimed mostly against thieves.
And clones do have the same capability – the difference lies in the pets higher mobility and the ability to choose targets on their own.

I wish this were true. I almost got crushed at the end of the skipping stones puzzle after my illusion decided to go after the champ reef rider- this was AFTER it killed it’s target. Someone else noticed their clones were acting funny too, so maybe Anet is changing them or they’re just bugged…
