Story time! I want to 1st start about what’s good with swtor. It has GREAT dialogue, very good voice acting, good and reliable loot, leveling isn’t bad, and the story is GREAT. Now with why I had to get out FAST.

I went to swtor cause it was free to play. 1st thing that happened when I logged on, there was some guy saying he was experienced and willing to help new players figure out the game. I thought, what a nice guy… then IT happened. Another person in chat responded. RAGE! SO mad at the guy for talking in map chat, demanding that he shut up. Death threats ensued among with a LOT of vulgarness The nice guy kept trying to help newbies like myself so he put the other guy on ignore. Problem is, ignore doesn’t “ignore” the whispers and mail. The jerk player was whispering him death threats, sending him death threat mail, very much so harassing the guy.

Got to a new zone, didn’t even realize it’s the same jerk from before. I said hello, so he started following me around, spamming the “clap” emote. It’s an annoying emote that you can’t mute without muting your game and it sounds very much like someone kitten. He followed me, continuously spamming this clap emote, for 2 hours. The fast travel mechanism in the game lets you travel once every 2 hours and I had already used mine so there was no escape from this jerk. I finally got far enough in my personal story to get into a long personal instance where the guy couldn’t follow so thank god for that. He was gone forever.

Shortly after I am able to discover a new zone. YAY. I also get access to my 1st dungeon, super happy cause dungeon are my thing. 1st run goes smooth as it’s a very easy dungeon and such despite getting insulted for being a f2p noob for the entire run.

Then I realized I very much so hated the class I was using. Didn’t know why but I found out it wasn’t the class but the combat system. You can’t swing your weapons unless you have something targetted and are in range of said target. On top of that, you can’t dodge. If you’re in range of an attack, see the attack coming, and move VERY far out of the way, it will still hit you. The play isn’t in making people waste their attacks and take advantage, it’s in never getting attacked at all… super boring.

I decided to make a new character. Go into the start zone with more knowledge and experience, everything is going significantly smoother. I get a few levels under my belt and notice someone is asking for help on a hard quest. I offer to help but let him know I have a far ways to walk and no fast travel to get there. He says that’s fine and so I make my LONG journey back. About half way back to the guy he starts complaining that I’m taking too long, that I should be this and that, then starts insulting me. About 2/3 of the way there, he’s openly cussing and clearly is po’d. When I FINALLY get there, he’s fuming but no longer talking. He spawns the boss, it goes after me, so I start kiting it in a circle trying to stay alive. He stands in the middle spamming “laugh” then says “I can’t see the boss”… Right. So we start the boss again (I just wanted my exp boost). This time he helps out… at the start. I get the boss to about 50% with kiting him around, trying to stay alive. Then the guy just stops, spams laugh some more, then says “I hope you fking die you bleep de bleep bleep bleep.” So when I finally die, the guy goes ahead and finishes off the boss. He takes absurdly long to try to accept the reward, trying to get me to leave pt so I don’t get the chance at the item.
You see loot in the game is great but every party member gets to see what drops but the game only gives it to 1 guy after dangling it in front of everyone eles. That kitten es a LOT of people off when they don’t get the item they want.

So anyways I stick it out and actually get the item! It’s even one I could really use but you see the other guy didn’t like that, not one bit. So he map chat rages and death threats me again. When I block him, he starts whispering me and mailing me more crap that I can’t block and he just won’t quit. So I logged off for a few hours.

I came back on a little while later and tried my luck at the 1st dungeon again but with the new character I was talking about before. Everything went easy and smooth… until the 1st drop happened. We are all level 11 and a level 11 item dropped that would be good for any 3 of us. I get the item this time and immediately equip it. Death threats and rage ensue. Not even kidding. For the next 40 freaking minutes of this dungeon, all we hear is this guy and his friend trying to explain to us why this one item is useless on us and so we should just give every item we get to them. This goes on and on for every drop… even the ones the 2 friends pick up. SUPER ANNOYING. I decide to try the dungeon 1 last time. Same kitten. Different people, same death threats, same annoying logic for 20 mins. At least these guys had the decency to leave the group half way through. Me and the 1 other chill guy in the group decided to stay try to finish. We got to the final boss before we hit one MASSIVE road block. If you’re fighting the boss, you can’t tag team it cause whenever you swap, the boss resets. You can’t beat the boss as a team since neither of our classes had ANY way to heal ourselves or others. There’s no dodge mechanic so we had to face tank all the damage. If someone were to survive long enough for the other guy to res and run all the way back, the moment that guy got back into the room, the boss would insta reset.

After that, I uninstalled the game and came back to gw2.

Now if there’s any, what’s your horror story for trying to leave gw2 for someting else.

I didn’t read your whole post but after like a paragraph i knew exactly what you went through.

Dude the same thing happened when i tried out TERA for like a week. Worst online community i have ever experienced. It felt like their was a troll around every corner. The gear and level grind were ridiculous (happens when you stay away from asian mmos). The develpers only seemed interested in farming money from its customers (A costume box set was $60). And do not get me started on one their playable races called the Elin…..

well this is the same story in every “group loot” mmo, I remember those pug dungeon runs in wow, getting ninja’edrunning dungeons over and over again to get that one piece of armor i needed just to loose the need roll on someone else…

I’ve never tried to leave GW2, but i’ve played a couple of games along the way and none of them has been as satisfying and pleasant as GW2, save the forum whinners, GW2 has a really nice and cool comunity AND really good gameplay.

As a casual gamer, ninja looting, “I need it for my alt,” and fighting a dozen other players for that one special piece of loot that drops once a month if you’re lucky… it gets old fast. Even going after that Ori node and seeing someone get there one second before you do is a bother.

Having played a game where every player gets his own loot, every player can harvest a node, no one steals your kills/xp and you actually get rewarded for rezzing other players… it’s really hard to go back to the “old way” and have fun.

^ It is too difficult to go back. It kinda makes me worried for games like blade and soul.

Don’t get me wrong TERA’s combat was interesting but the heavy gear grind, dull questing, classism, and terribad pvp imbalance was too much for me.

I never tried sPvP when I started playing before taking a long break. Now, all I do is WvW and hotjoin sPvP, because the people are chattier and nicer than PvE Dungeon runners, for some reason.

The first time I tried sPvP when I started playing again last week, I braced myself for whatever trakittenalking or plain bad behavior that may come my way, but to my surprise, everyone was just quiet, doing their thing, and when I said it was my first time playing and asked for tips and directions, some of them actually gave tips, even one from the opposing side. Nobody trakittenalked anybody, nobody called out anybody for ‘being a noob’, nobody did emotes to shame a downed player, none of that, everyone just playing, having fun, then ‘gg’ at the end of a match. Quite refreshing, to be honest.

In SPvP every toon is level 80, has access to all skills, pretty much the same equipment, etc. So it’s less a game of “stomp the noob” and more like a contest of skill. So it doesn’t surprise me that the average player there has respect for his opponents as well as his teammates.

It took a while for DCUO to change the loot rules embedded in the game, so that a Healer could not roll Need on Tank drops, but since all characters can be DPS…. completing DPS sets in order to get the Feat that rewards Skill points that enhance stats can be challenging. I too greatly appreciate independent loot drops per character.

Been playing Warframe, where everyone shares all loot (everyone can get it). Sure it’s a Co-Op or Solo game, that includes the ability to mark the location of the ground where loot drops, so anyone can go get it from the group. So much fun being a space ninja! It lacks depth, but the style and gameplay are enjoyably different from most games (as is; a free beta on steam; see “Pax east Warframe” 0o; watch trailers in order: first look; Alpha; Beta).

GW2 is beautiful and I want to do more, but… I agree with the posted video by RandomFightFan of the 10 things to improve. I’ve moved on. Yet still visit forum and news of GW2 and DCUO for signs that issues have been resolved and more content has been added. I fondly imagine that I will play GW2 and DCUO again. I sure as heck will not play WarhammerOnline again.

Everyone (devs) wants a piece of the cake that WOW made. I trialed WOW (for 2 weeks) and did not like the gameplay. They may have refined aspects of a game that work, but I dislike the game they made. I think Co-Op games needs to be explored much more than it has been in recent years and there is certainly room for it. I think Co-Op has more Much More potential than handheld games or social media games. I think MMOs have too many inherent issues that can not be easily overcome. Much like online FPS modes that have too many players that buy cheats. The intentions of the Devs is great, but in the hands of the public, it ends badly. -my2cents

Don’t get me wrong the combat is amazing. What set me off more than anything was the community. Too many explicit Elin jokes for my comfort level among other things and with global chat you can only imagine (may have been my server’s community that did this).

This game was designed to minimize the loot stress that you’ll find in other games. The design is intentional. It doesn’t appeal to griefers, as a rule, because it’s hard to grief her by comparison. It can happen but it’s not easy.

Some design elements that make this my MMO of choice:

1. No tagging. Do you know how many times in WoW I waited for a boss to spawn only to have some guy who came later tag it before I could, so I had to wait for him to spawn again to get my quest reward?

2. Everyone has their own nodes. In Rift I used to use knockbacks to mine nodes while fighting, in fear the guy two feet away was going to steal it from me, even though he saw I was fighting the guy on top of it. Can’t happen here.

3. Everyone gets their own roll on loot tables from mobs, from vets, from champions, from chests. No rolling for stuff, You’re not taking anyone else’s rewards.

4. No one can steal your experience. You all get credit for killing stuff, so it’s not usually a bad thing if someone shows up to help. In fact, running with people, which I do frequently with my guild increases your loot and experience gain, because you take things down faster. Farming in a group, if you do farm (which I seldom do) is amazing in this game.

5. The community is much much nicer than other games. You know that guy you mentioned OP? The one who wanted to help new people. That’s me sometimes in Guild Wars 2, just standing around in an early zone, waiting for the Maw to spawn, or just chilling and offering help to new people. I do it several times a week. To me, it’s all about community.

Welcome back, OP. There really is no game like Guild Wars 2.

Wow, that is absolutely horrific, I’ve never had that many bad experiences in quick succession like that! No worries OP, you’re safe now! (Safer, at least.)

I played Tera for a while as well! Pre-ordered it and everything, was really excited about it. I didn’t have a particularly bad time with trolls in that game, not worse than any other I’ve played, though that was one of the reasons I eventually left. (I haven’t touched Tera since it went f2p though, so it may’ve gotten worse.) Main reason for me was, in short: Battlegrounds. They were abhorrent for a plethora of reasons, one of which being that because I was on the PVE server (while 99% of the people doing BGs were on the PVP server.) that meant everyone would harass me if they lost, even if I did considerably better than them. And at this point the playerbase was so small you’d just see the same 30 people over and over. I love that there is no separation in this game, and I can hop between game modes whenever! I absolutely loved the combat in that game, and if this game had a combat system more like Tera it would be perfect for me. But aside from that everything else in this game is miles upon miles ahead of Tera, sometimes I want to hop on Tera and solo a few BAMs at once like I used to do, but I heard they made it easier to do since that was too hard for most people apparently. :\ I would miss everything about this game too much to actually play it again though.

I played TOR before GW2 came out and I agree – the writing and dialogue are great – but that’s it. When you’re not in your personal story, the game is boring and repetitive. The combat is fire and forget, the areas are super linear, the worlds that give you any room to run don’t give you any reason to explore and once you leave an area they don’t just fail at finding reasons to bring you back – they punish you if you do. (Once you outlevel a planet all the old quests only give 5xp; even though they could give the same xp they’re supposed to and, since XP Cost for each level increases, you would already be getting less than if you just did a mission of your level. And it’s not much faster doing a lower level quest.) GW2 does all the things right that TOR does wrong. Bioware knows how to make great stories, but doesn’t have a clue how to make a great MMO and it shows.

TOR was such a disappointment, I was glad GW2 lived up to my expectations.

I’m sorry I stepped outta yer box, don’ worry, if

Times like this make me miss the City of Heroes community. Even when that game went to F2P everyone there was fairly nice, and also fairly smart. Hell, they even made a charity once.

Anyway, I do have some horror stories of previous games. There was one game called Runescape, and yes it is a f2p MMO. The way that game is designed, resource nodes are designed so once taken by any player they become unavailable to all players. Monster drops are given wholly to whomever tags the monster first, regardless of anyone else’s contribution. PVP in non-minigames is run entirely by a “loser loses all equipment, money, and inventory” system where it is killed and then get killed in a lawless wasteland. High end equipment in the game so expensive that it literally takes months to save up enough cash to get them, doing nothing but grinding for cash.

Needless to say, the community there is horrible. Throughout the entire game, everyone is your enemy. Your teammates want you to die so they can steal your stuff, other players hate how you take their mines/trees/fishing spots, and there is little to no cooperation. Anyway, once I was in a clan chat that a lot of people frequented, and there were two guys who didn’t want me there. Mostly because I reported them for breaking the rules (graphic language, real life threats, sharing stolen movies, ect). So their response to this was to do nothing but rapid fire insults and threats at me nonstop for 3 hours.

Three hours… I don’t have the fortitude in my wrists and fingers to do nothing but type insults as quickly as possible nonstop for that time. How people can accomplish that is amazing, and how people can resolve to do that is horrifying.

As a kid, when I grew up I learned of “trolls” being those angsty brats who did things just for attention. The often repeated mantra was “if you ignore them then they’ll go away”. Much like advice on bullying, this doesn’t work largely because the trolls/bullies know these mantras, and so act in a way accordingly once encountered. For trolls, this results in players who will do nothing but stand around and yell at people for hours on end, even when there is a 90% chance that the people are ignoring them via in-game function. Even without any sort of response or feed forward from their “victims”. And these aren’t angsty preteens looking for acknowledgement. These are middle-aged homeowners, college graduates, fathers and mothers.

It is fascinating, but in a bad way. The obsession these people have, the pure malice in their actions, it is confounding to any reasonable person how they could behave as such.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.

i’ll tell you a secret…
GW2 had the best community at start.

Then one day (15 november 2012) they decided to appeal to WoW players…..and started to give credit to them

In 1-2 weeks the Whole community changed completely…..

GW2 balance:
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

well this is the same story in every “group loot” mmo, I remember those pug dungeon runs in wow, getting ninja’edrunning dungeons over and over again to get that one piece of armor i needed just to loose the need roll on someone else…

I’ve never tried to leave GW2, but i’ve played a couple of games along the way and none of them has been as satisfying and pleasant as GW2, save the forum whinners, GW2 has a really nice and cool comunity AND really good gameplay.

I’ve only experienced one other game with the loot rolling thing. Didn’t run into any issues like the OP or you although there were a couple of ‘hmm that would be perfect for me but useless for that guy situation’. However the very act of having to do the roll on every loot drop was a bloody chore. I don’t see how anyone can stand doing that constantly. Maybe some games offer autoroll options.

Anyway I don’t think the issue/difference is so much the group loot but the fact that in GW2 the gear matters but not nearly to the same degree as other games. Sure rares/exotic/ascended would make things easier but only a handful of things is really impossible with just Masterwork and even then with enough skill you can probably still do it.

You have a lot more patience than I do. I would have hit ignore about 2/3 of the way there with all the complaining. I only lasted a few hours in TERA, just a huge mix of things I did not like about the game. Glad you like this game.

I’m starting to be a little concerned. This amount of sanity in Vayne is disturbing… but he’s right!
Great game, more focused on the great aspects of the community. When i heard that this game was introducing individual rewards, quest item and farm nodes i became instantly happy.

And do not get me started on one their playable races called the Elin…..

weird. When I tried it I never found that grind you’re talking about. And do you really NEED a costume set? Also did you get out of the starting zone? Most of the swearing happens there, then I rarely hear any of it.
And I liked playing as Elin. What’s so wrong about being a little girl wielding a ridiculously big sword? That’s why I play Asura in GW2

Wow OP I read your post, and it’s completely awful, so welcome back)
What concerns me the msot is that someone has 2 hours spare in their life to run after another person clapping….

@Mirta
At the later levels questing xp is way too slow due to the fact that the quest tells you travel from one place to another kill like ten things occasionally for mediocre xp and then at the end gives you like 1/5 of total xp needed to level for what took an hour.
(Mobgrind actually becomes faster later but only in conjuction with a double xp buff that you can buy.)

I in no way needed a costume but it seemed that most “updates” were costume focused.

Global chat, area chat, and lfg chat (which worked like global pretty much) in that game was left unfiltered. I could only go as far as level 40 before I got tired. I have nothing against the Elin race itself but the players and community who would turn those characters into some sick joke while feeling inclined to tell me about it in chat. The jokes weren’t just focused on Elin. Anything that looked female wasn’t safe. I also play Asura and went popori sorcerer.

Note: just my experience. I truly wanted to enjoy the game. Play to kill a BAM from time to time. Also loved the dungeons.

randomfightfan of sector 2814. You have great rage in your heart.

Sorry, couldn’t resist myself. Your title brought that image to my mind.
Seriously though, I’d be angry too. I remember similar occurrences in WoW. Especially dungeon loot clashes, and since I was a leather healer, it annoyed me when rougues rolled on gear with healing power on them. I don’t know why more games follow a separate gear and gathering system like GW2, anything but feels so archaic and backwards in comparison.

That sounds about par for the course in a F2P game. Though sadly enough after you play SWTOR for more then a month, trolling new players is the most entertaining thing in that game. I was so sad when swtor turned out to be the worst MMO ever, I had such high hopes. ends up GW2 was exactly everything I wanted in an mmo.
