Why I still play GW1! The CORPG!
Completely agree with you.
Fundamentally, gw2 plays more like an fps than an rpg. Every man for himself. Also, it lacks a great deal of depth. In gw1 there were many dimensions to fights, with interrupts, pressure damage, spike damage, hexes (with each of the popular mesmer hexes such as diversion, shame and backfire each individually altering gameplay drastically and adding further dimensions), conditions, split tactics, flag management, energy management, base defense, positioning, line backing… The reason there are so many balance problems now in gw2 is because the only dimensions that really count are raw damage and map control, with all of the classes rated by players in terms of how fast they can kill someone or how long they can last before being killed. There are not enough “larger” variable to make things interesting.
I play original Guild Wars from time to time.
I would play even more if there were more people around.
I loved watching GvG matches, they were awesome. GW2’s PvP matches are good too, but aren’t that good. mainly for the reasons milo mentioned. This DPS fest is affecting the game as a whole, I’m sure they’ll fix it somehow and also expand the PvP in the game.
Agree. To this date I think GvG/FA and even RA/Halls were some of the best pvp experiences I have had pvp wise in any MMO type game. Mainly because it felt much like Magic the Gathering to me, but with teams and more allies at any given time. Felt very balanced even if meta revolved around FOTM builds many times.
I always felt that it was pretty balanced and that balancing occurred to actually change the meta around to see what players would come up with.
I also felt that it had infinitely more depth as you would always see something new. You had natural frontlines midlines and backlines with players building for actual roles like mentioned in the first post, interuptors/pressure/spike. You had boons that made sense. You had enchantments. You had skills that you actually had to set up to get them to work:
Honestly if I had the cash (lol), I would take the GW2 world (minus Scarlett) and totally recreate the build building system GW had. Energy management and all couple with some on demand spammable skills you have here. I would also bring back the condition system of GW as I think that fit infinitely better.
If anyone misses build-making, I suggest you go try TSW. That game is theorycraft heaven.
why the hell havent they released gvg
Exectly!! completely agree with you.
I miss those times alot. It was so fun to do daily GvG.
Best match i ever had was my guild ranked top 100 vs a top 5 guild. Both balanced team build. Both fighting without really killing anything. I hear leader calling a spike on the enemy mesmer over teamspeak, first thing i’m thinking as interupt ranger, find the monk!! found him in time and 1 second after spike… D-shot and got it!! WoH down for 20 second. I scream in my mic about this matchchanging happening. Our leader understood what needed to happen. Unleash hell upon the enemy. The next 30 seconds the match was decided and we rolled the enemy. Spltting was of no use and we countered that easily. Flag control was in our hands and we just kept splitting to kill npc’s and fight it out till VoD.
After the match we PMed the enemy team and guested them to our guildhall. Just chatting and talking tactics while observing the match.
1 skill could mess up a match or make the match if cast on the right time, on the right target in the right location.
To bad we don’t have halls and this kind of PvP in gw2:(
But i’ll never forget!

that made me miss gvg even more… thanks jerk
Wow old memories but you left out the Greatest winning guild of all time in both GvG and HoH…..“Koss” (unless it was before your time then nvm). Those were matches worthy of watching repeatedly as well. Perhaps they’ll finally get around to bringing in gh’s and the old school PvP. A girl can hope!!! GAME ON
Watching GW1 GvG was the only time, in a long gaming career, that I actually just sat and “watched” other people play.
Was fun to watch a Guild bring a new set to the field and totally re-define the meta as well. Synergy and theorycraft.
I’m bringing this back
Please Arena Net I beg you the matches Ryder describes were the best games of my life. I’ve been searching and searching but i just cant find anything that even compares… WOW 2v2’s and 3v3’s have a distant 2ed spot compared to those days of Guildwars.
i tottaly agree gvg was the best thing i ever seen in a game, and arena net must think to put gvg back again maybe not tha same but something like that, but if you see now the skills is for stand alone not for kitten team to work together and anyone took there role. And gvg without Monk noway
I really miss being able to watch right within the client too.

They’re adding GvG through Guild Hall post patch!
Just wait for it.
Though the objective may be alot simpler..
Fond memories of a time gone by. I remember GvG – it was incredibly fun. Maybe something similar will come back.
