Why would I do hours and hours of mindless zergs only to obtain skins to do more hours and hours of mindless zergs?

Because pvp is fun.

Well, as far as Spvp goes, you can only take the same 4 maps (only 2 that I like), 8v8 and being zerged down CONSTANTLY, as well as playing against thieves/mesmer/guardians up the wazoo before you start to lose your sanity.

Tpvp atleast is 5v5 though. (Silverlining)

If u had already the best arena gear , and the next arena season would start in 2-3 months , would u do ?

PvP is intrinsically fun in a way that PvE cannot match. Any player versus player content is more or less infinite, because players are far more challenging, unpredictable and interesting to play against than AI.

It’s like popcorn. Popcorn is intrinsically interesting and moreish because every popped corn has a unique shape

Dam.. op is right… bring back gear and levels. Lets all kick ten tons of, out of the low levelled, less geared guy and call our selves PRO :P

sPvP is insanely fun.Also there isn’t all that much zerging from what i have seen.When they zerg , we just take the other two points and laugh.Keep it in rotation and they wonder why they lost XD

Found your problem. You’re only playing the game to obtain rewards. For me personally sPvP is one of the things I do when I know I want to be playing Guild Wars 2 but don’t want to do events and/or can’t find a group for dungeons.

Any rewards obtained from SPvP are a bonus and I don’t even look forward to them. I queue up with the sole intention of having a good game.

Why is League of Legends so popular then?

I mean if you don’t like it, then you don’t like it. Different strokes for different folks and all.

Also, as someone else said, since when is 8v8 a zerg?

Because this is a game, where you have, you know… fun?

If you want a game that feels like a job where you have to grind grind grind for better gear just to compete, there are plenty of those out already.

It is super fun. And since there is no gear mill you don’t feel obligated to keep doing it even when you don’t feel like it.

I haven’t been in the mood this week. So I don’t have to worry that I will go back next week and get two shot by everyone because they have better gear than I do.

8v8 is a zerg every match. Everyone runs around no meta just zerg this point on to the next.

It would be cool with some unique PvP armor/weapons instead of having all of the PvP armor look like the PvE armor

If anything sPvP is so fun (for me) that I wish it gave real xp like WvW, so I could keep up with my PvE-loving friends…I fall behind because sometimes all I do is sPvP!

I somewhat agree. Why would I choose sPvP over WvW?

In WvW you get larger battles. Plus you can go off alone and get into a 1v1 if you want. The rewards are better in WvW and there’s also PvE content.

Yes, you can liken sPvP to FPS games.

However, once you make this comparison sPvP somehow feels under-developed in general. Hopefully in the future they’ll add more maps and more modes. Right now if you aren’t a fan of the 4 maps and the 1 mode available… well then sPvP is literally just not for you. Imagine if a MP FPS game launched with 4 maps/arenas and 1 mode…

This. I must have thousands of hours over the years between CS and CS:S, with no in-game reward whatsoever. Heaven forbid you play a game for fun and not the pursuit of digital items.

Yeah it’s true but it is really early and I have absolutely no doubt they will be adding to sPvP in the future.

People who honestly believe sPvP is about zerging are the same people who run alone into 8 people when the rest of the team is capping the other two points.

Zerging is the worst tactic in sPvP with the easiest counter.

Hopefully over time as more people learn the game the number of people rushing aimlessly around will decrease. Especially if they regularly find themselves coming up against people who know what they’re doing and keep losing as a result.

But to answer the OP PVP in Guild Wars has always been primarily about having fun playing, with any rewards being secondary. I’m almost entirely a PVE player but even I like to join in odd matches for the fun of it.

This is supposed to be a mmorpg. This example of Spvp serving no purpose in the game as a whole is one more reason I leave the rpg off mmo when I speak of GW2.

Giving you something fun to do isn’t serving a purpose? Isn’t that supposed to be the entire purpose of every game, ever?

If you don’t think it’s fun then that’s fair enough, don’t do it. But you seem to be saying that unless you get some kind of tangible reward the entire thing is pointless.

Not sure what you want out a competition? the reward of competing is, well winning and recognition. If they haven’t implemented leader boards, titles, achievements, etc then hopefully Anet will do that asap.

Now I assume you enjoy PvP (in any game) if not then I don’t understand why you would ask this in the first place.

What Mobas lack in map diversity, they make up for in the sheer amount of hero diversity. That’s obviously not going to happen with GW2 so it has to add diversity elsewhere.

True, although a single class in GW2 can make for several different builds with considerably different gameplay styles.

4 maps isn’t such a bad start imo, I mean how many do mmos usually launch with? WoW didn’t even have battlegrounds at launch. Not to mention people can still really get into just one map and go at it like crazy.

Also, comparing a FPS to GW2’s sPvP isn’t really fair since to an FPS multiplayer is usually the main feature while to GW2 it’s just one of the many things it has available.

A very good point, actually. Hell, a lot of people were upset that BF3 didn’t launch with double-digits.

Here’s hoping they give us more sPvP maps sooner rather than later. I can’t imagine they’re too hard to develop.

that’s like asking why do people play games like counter strike: source? or more interestingly, why do people play cs 1.6?
