Why a paid expansion makes sense
So you could get something for free, and yet you want to pay money for it. Paid expansion does not make sense, it could easily be a free large update. Gem store generates enough funds to cover everything no need to bring out a paid expansion that the company has been against since day one.
They might also lose players as a result – not everyone will buy the expansion, just as not everyone buys gems. Whether they’d still come out ‘up,’ I have no idea. I’m sure others have a better idea of what the end-result will be.
I do know I’ll be one of the players lost; they’ve just never followed through on their most significant comments/ideas, as far as I’ve seen, such as ‘every class, every weapon,’ or Precursor crafting, or even resolved issues like Engineer Hobosacks. I haven’t bought any gems as a result, and I won’t buy the expansion.
On the other hand, if the expansion is free and resolves the issues above? I might actually play the game again, instead of logging on and getting rewarded for existing.
This is exactly why it makes sense. People have asked for an expansion, so Anet can take what was going to be free and charge money for it – people will pay. They make more money and they’ll have listened to the playerbase.
NO! Paid expansion would fragment the playerbase and is completely unnecessary with all the revenue they get from the gem store.
Besides that, I’ll point you to the quote, “setting up a new framework for how MMO’s expand their universe.” Is a paid expansion a new framework? I would argue it is the exact opposite. Therefore, it does not make sense.
I’m willing to pay for an expansion. Anet make it happen, I’ll be there the first day with my credit card.
I’m gonna laugh if HoT isn’t an expansion at all but instead some lame mobile device game with links to gem store items. Or some big PvP only expansion because of you know ESPORTS! “This message will go away once you reload the forums.”

IF it’s an expansion, A-Net will most likely release it the same way the did GW expansions and make it a b2p. I would also say they’d release new skills for each profession and a possibility of a new profession. We would also get new maps to explore and new achievements and maybe even some new Dungeons.

I would love to see some sort of evidence that ArenaNet has been opposed to a paid expansion since day one, considering they’ve used the paid campaign/expansion model in the past.
It would have made sense if it was a new story but since this is a continuation of the living world it would be very unwise to make it paid for everyone (expansion with game included to new people is fine, they can even throw in all of season 2) since it would risk people becoming adverse to the living story (since they would have had to skip the main conflict). It would also set a bad precedent for future living world stories.
From a very basic economic standpoint, the higher the profit motive the higher the incentive to produce a good product. Paid content is more likely, in general, to be better content because of that corollary. My wallet is open and waiting ArenaNet.

Dont get me wrong, it would likely mean every single piece of content introduced would of been designed with how much they can stuff into the cash shop in mind.
Infact, It will likely be like paying to get exclusive access to the new store items!

My exact fear if the expansion is NOT paid. When their model is gem shop driven, you get gem shop centric content. If their model is based on selling a couple million boxes or digital downloads, the content itself becomes pivotal.
If its a paid-for expansion, I’ll be happy to buy it contingent on whether or not it seems reasonable to me for what it offers and provides.
If its a paid expansion coming down the way and they want $60 for what I regard as being worth maybe $20? Adios. Been fun, thanks for the guacamole but I’m out.
I wouldn’t expect that to be the case. That’s never happened to me in any mmo I’ve ever played, point in fact.
But then, I never would have expected the NPE to be so weirdly unintuitive about stats in particular, or that something as absurdly ill-advised as trait locking could possibly go live in its current state.
So, I’ll keep the skeptical home-fires burning until whatever’s coming is here. Until then, everything’s suspect and my expectations remain flush with the floor.

You mean like GW2 itself? Each and every one of us paid for the game, yet the content is always gem store driven. what would make an expansion different?

This behavior make me incredibly angry. You paid 60 dollars once (I guess loudest screamers 20 in some sale) and you enjoying game for 2 years. I have over 5k hours played. And now you scream because you will pay a little bit more for massive expansion? Remember from gw1 those expansions had always content worth 2/3 of orginal game. Out there are 60 dollar games what you finish in 5 hours with overpriced DLCs what you finish in 20 minutes and yet you still complain about expansion what can bring you addional lets say 4k hours of fun? Dont be ridiculous..
Anet never had problem with splited playerbase they are competent and I am sure they will come with something innovative just trust them.

What I said in my original post is exactly how I think they should approach an expansion, If they do it that way I would be very happy, the company would profit massively.
Not only do they get all the revenue from sales, they also get to create an expansion worth of cash shop goodies.
Double kerchin!
For them would make sense. For us little to none considering we are used to get monthly content for free. They could and should stick to get money from cash shop.
Now if we were talking about a huge, massive update, like 50% more of the current content… yeah, I see myself paying another 15 bucks.
I am also willing to pay for the expansion. Please make it happen. Even better if it’s boxed
As far as I know people still buy GW1, either to try it cause they only started from GW2, or just as a part of a collection. Same thing will happen with a boxed expansion. The money for it will keep on coming for years to come.
I’m just going to be blunt: you’re a fool if you think a full blown expansion will come totally free. ArenaNet is, first and foremost, a business. Businesses are for profit. ArenaNet employees have lives to live, bills to pay, mouths to feed. $40-60 is not that much, and it boggles my mind that people think that is a ridiculous amount. It blows my mind even more than people think a game is a must-have thing. It’s only a game, folks. You should only use money you are prepared to use as kindling to buy things like games. Budgeting, it’s a good thing.
Start saving your money now so you can buy it if there really is an expansion coming.
An expansion is worth the cost, IF it caters to all players!
WvW STILL has not had and real content added to it! We’ve been ignored and even punished whenever we have raised our concerns!
So my question will be, Why should I, as a WvW player, buy this expansion when Anet have repeated shunned us in WvW thinking scraps are good enough for us?!
