Why are the servers so empty??
Even Desolation server is very empty compared to some months ago. I play on it since beta, but don’t like how the population level goes. People got bored of the game after getting to 80 and basically they left since Anet has no plans for an expansion. And the server combine will not happen any time soon. Anet seems happy with the servers as they are.
As an Aussie I agree during primetime, servers are spread thin. There used to be an unofficial Aus server, but since some people thought others should the the Oceanic server, most Aussies/Kiwis spreading elsewhere after launch and just simply it not being marked anywhere, we all can’t get together and play properly. Put simply, it’s a pain in the kitten .
Aussie here too. Maybe you’re just on the wrong server for our peak time. I’m on IoJ and I always see people running about. Even on the mid level maps. And I’m not even on the best server for the Australian player base. Maybe have a bit of a guest around and check other servers out.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
Most people on dragonband are in World versus world… Dragonbrand is ranked number 5 in WvW, so its a WvW server, not PvE.
Sucks to say it, but thats where most people are
I’m from australia and nobody playing in my peak times
And there’s your answer. Finding a guild from your time zone would probably be best for you.

Do guilds work across servers??? i dont know if guilds would let me in since im lvevel 31
I am a player that realy don’t mind if the servers are empty or not, but how empty is a server when it’s called empty?
I play on EU-GH (Med Pop server I think) and I see meet players on every map I am running… I don’t see many players hanging around outside Dungeons or by other points of interests but I see other players running around questing/dieing/farming/doing dailies and so on.
Well, not that many but atleast enough to most of the time help or get help fighting a champion or so.
On the other hand, trying map chat is like a deadzone. I think alot of players are actually casual players that rather play solo and doesn’t pay attention to the map chat sadly.
And usually standing in LA… There’s alot of players but it’s only during special update prime times I end up on Overflow servers.

Guilds can work across servers, except for WvW. So if you don’t care about WvW and you only want to PvE (or SPvP) you could join a guild on a busier server. It just depends on the type of guild you want to join.
Hardcore, casual, somewhere in between. PvE, WvW, SPvP or a combination of all of them.
I mean when I looked for a guild, I looked for a PvE centered guild that was casual and social, but that obviously wouldn’t fit everyone.

Omg I NEVER thought that there are servers that empty -.- Sad future. Just guest on other servers and see how’s the population there. PS: if you enter www while guesting you get kicked back on your server. And if you log out too.

They’re probably all at the front lines, rather than durping in the spawn.
You can guest to any NA server.
I think, SoS was the unofficial Oceanic server, but that was months ago .. JQ + TC are often full at all hours.
DB is known for its SEA population so if you hang about a little longer you’ll get company.
Which populated servers for PvE around my level do you guys reccomend i guest to???
Because my server is literally empty when i try to do my quests, events, defending areas etc.
Try guesting to Tarnished Coast.

Any of the ones listed in the post above yours.
Edit: and I would have said come to IoJ for the evening and I’ll run around with you but I’ve gone to bed so that’s not really possible

Sea of Sorrows has a high Aussie/Kiwi population, so you might like to try guesting there to see if you have more luck finding people to play with.
Other servers that might have more oceanic players include Isle of Janthir and Gates of Madness, so you could also try guesting to them if SoS doesn’t suit you.
I’m on TC and even there the mid level zones are all empty most of the time, you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone there or even run across anyone while playing. Most people are in the really low levels doing dailies or really high level zones gathering or focused in LA running FotM because the other dungeons save for CoF P1 aren’t profitable.
LS sometimes focuses people in a single zone for a time but that’s all you’ll see.
Until their kitchen sink is implemented (the massive UI update that all mmo’s must have in order to keep things fresh) and the combat updates are complete to fix the problems with CC, support, and condition damage we’ll be seeing alot more empty zones.
Actually you’ll be hard pressed to find people in the mid-level, out-of-the-way zones, even on the busiest servers.
This will help you find where everyone is, on your server:

Best bet, as per above post, is to match the dailies (so for today, most probably Diessa).

I’ll call you on this. I’m on TC and there’s almost always people in the middle zones, even in prime Australian time.
There are still a lot of players. They are doing WvW, sPvP or the endgame PvE content: Running Fractals everyday of farming the same dungeon. To look for groups they meet in Lion’s Arch… maybe if you are lucky a few are in the Open World maps… but they don’t care about doing other stuff than dungeons so they won’t help you.
Also a few in some regions killing the event bosses for chests. They don’t care about other stuff and only travel there to do the event.
Open World 1-80 maps are usually only done to get the World Completion of you care about that…(or if you want Legendaries). Now if most people only want 1 Legendary for their main and level 2-8 chars(other classes) fasters other ways and never do the whole world again there won’t be much players anymore in these maps. Especially with not that much new players coming to Guild Wars 2(most of new players are at release).
That can’t be helped.
From my experience, Queensdale is usually the hub for PvE activity. Meet some people, make new friends, take it from there.

Dragonbrand is primarily an asian server. The main oceanic server is Sea of Sorrows. Blackgate, Fort Aspenwood and Isle of Janthir also have decent oceanic presence.

Some say it’s empty and some say it full off life, how empty is empty to OP? To give him help to decide if it’s empty or not is to know how full of life the server has to be according to OP.
I base this on assuming OP’s server isn’t realy empty it may be low populated.

I never said it’s full….I did say it’s not empty. There’s a big big difference between that.
I hardly go to a zone where I don’t see people in the zone. Not hundreds of people…but people none the less.
I think some people expect 100 people in a zone, and that’s not reasonable off hours. But that doesn’t mean that people are in the zones. And if you want to do an event, often you can start it, call it out in map chat and get people coming in.
And of course, it’s always going to be less busy on patch days, when new content encourages us to go to one area.

Exactly, I spend 30+ minutes making a full circle around sparkfly fen, dredgehaunt cliff, and timberline fall. And manage to find 1 person on TC.
If people arn’t finding people, they are just not trying hard enough.
all joke aside, I think some sort of scavenge hunt can bring people back to lowbie zone.

most of everyone on Db are level 80 do meta events and dungeons and wvw in your level range there isn’t a lot of people in each zone. when i got doing my dailies i usually pick a random zone to do it in. But i understand how it can feel empty at times. when you get up in level’s you’ll start to see more people.

This is why I loved the way GW1 handled servers – essentially there weren’t any, towns were divided into districts and you could jump freely between them so it was always possible to find people, even if your home district was empty. Unfortunately I suspect that was only possible because all the explorable areas were instanced. (And because they didn’t have anything like WvW.)
I would love it if Anet could add more information to the server list, mark things like the unofficial RP servers, Oceanic/Australasian servers, which EU servers have been adopted for unsupported languages like Russian and Italian etc. but as this topic shows it wouldn’t be really practical because things can shift and change over time.
I think the best option is to guest to other servers (start with the ones recommended in this topic) and try to find one you like. If you want to transfer permanently you can either pay a fee in gems (which means either real money, in-game gold or a combination) or if you delete all your characters you can transfer for free.

Talk about a straw man argument. You could have someone 10 feet away from you, around the corner and you wouldn’t see them. You could have players even culled if there are lots of creatures in an area.
Use map chat and talk to people. I almost always get a response so someone has to be there. And some people don’t even have map chat on.

You mean finding people in a zone is like guild bounty mission? I’m really just joking but there really is no one. I make a full circle across 3 zones, which take 30+ minutes and see 1 person.
I just started playing the game on the dragonbrand server, i picked it because it was under “very high” server load so i figured it was populated.
I’m level 31 guardian and nobody is playing the game…i find it hard to level up and progress since dynamic events, group events can’t be done alone so i get no exp!
Even Lion’s Arch is empty like nobody is even playing, i feel like im playing single player.
I’m from australia and nobody playing in my peak times….. game feels desolete and it is really boring since it relies on others to play and participate in events.
they really need to combine servers into 3 big servers
I’ve been on Dragonbrand since launch and I can tell you now the peak hours are between 5pm and 2am EST which is probably when you and the rest of Australia are asleep. Lions Arch is almost always packed when I’m on, and I run in to random players in the world every 5 minutes no matter what obscure, remote area of a zone I visit.
The only thing I can suggest is you try to find a server with a higher Australian population.

nope, I just went to the same 3 zone. ask in map chat if anyone is in the zone. No one answer. Even if there are people there, I don’t think they’ll bother to answer.
Face it, there are no reason to go back to mid level zone unless you are doing map completion. If they want to bring people back, some sort of scavenge hunt is a good start.
And sorry, I’m just being silly to actually test it. Hope I don’t offend you in anyway.

Empty as in, not a single soul during dynamic events / group events….i’m the only one there
That’s because no one cares about dynamic events that are not world bosses and that don’t give you a daily chest with a yellow item guaranteed.
Until Anex fix the rewards, you won’t see a lot of people doing it.
Hopefully, exept group events, you can solo them.

There are really cool group events like killing big bosses, defending/capturing a point against many enemies but i can’t try them out there was one time there was one other guy in a group event for killing a boss.
It took us 25 minutes to kill the monster and all we got was a few hundred experience points and karma….

Actually no, unless they have some kind of weird overflow thing going that’s not being told to the public because I’m constantly in these zones and no one is there. I rarely see anyone, ever, I see only people in the Queens and the Norn starter zones and I see people in Orr occassionally but never in the mid level zones even with people guesting so that’s one thing you’ll definitely not win the argument on man I have hundreds of hours of play time with it being empty because those are the places I go to to finish my dailies and to gather certain types of materials to sell to the TP because they are typically higher then the ones that sell for copper.
Look at what the Daily is, that will tell you which zones people are more likely to be in.
Eg. Ascalonian Event Completer means more people with be over in the Charr homelands.

and there are 24 hours in a day, 26 zones to fill, and 51 server to fill.
51 server across 26 zones is like 1326 zones.
It take like 2 hours to do map completion in a zone. 6478 hours have pass since the game is launch. So the 2 of you who spend like 2 hours in a mid level zone don’t help.
I didn’t even include wvw zones and city maps and dungeon that is where most people is.

I am on DB and the server is far from empty. Although it does seem like much more of an East coast US pop. The server seems the busiest from from 5pm – 2am EST during weekdays and 11am – 3am EST weekends.
I’ve been on the server since launch and i’ve never really heard of us having a high Aussie or European population. There are three unofficial-official oceanic servers. Sea of Sorrows being the most popular I think. You may want to research into those a bit and consider a transfer.

I’m on TC and what you’ve described matches my experience the past couple months. Leveling alts was a lonely—and thus boring—affair. Through most of the mid-level zones I visited I didn’t see another player. I played those characters during US prime-time, so maybe off-hours are better. Either way, it felt empty.

^this. SoS was/is an unofficial oceanic server. Heaps of people are on, map chat is always busy, lions arch has lots of people in it. Group events are so packed poor bosses don’t last very long, even when I’m in the most remote places in Tyria I always seem to bump into someone.
Sorry to say you picked the wrong server. I’m sure its a good server but just not for your timezone. How were you to know? you weren’t. People slowly worked it out since launch.
Its like when I picked a U.S server when I played WoW, and this was during its WotLK peak. Dead server was dead, but then when I logged in on the weekends and the americans were on, it was full of people. You just log on when no one is around.

I think that servers who are well ranked in WvW have far less people in PvE.
My server is in the 2nd last tier, I almost see no activity in WvW, a lot of people in LA and I often cross people in your “empty” areas… And I thik I would see more people if I were in the same timezone as my server (never played in prime)

I have never played in any MMO where months in to a release and major patches you would find bigger groups of people. In this game i do see plenty of people while leveling in mid level content.
Lets compare it to 20-60 zones in wow for example. Even with crossrealm zones and the help of flying mounts you would barely find anyone. And the ones that are in zones are usually botting.

I’ve had the same experience on TC. You occasionally see another person, but just in passing. I think it’s because the end game has absolutely nothing to do with the mid-level zones. (Orr is pretty empty too).
Generally, the end game is either WvW, Dungeons, or whatever living story bit is going on at the moment.
I’ll call you on this. I’m on TC and there’s almost always people in the middle zones, even in prime Australian time.

Well if you’re constantly in zones and I’m constantly in zones, what…we’re the only two? It doesn’t make sense. There are other people in my guild constantly all over the place. Are we such exceptions?
and there are 24 hours in a day, 26 zones to fill, and 51 server to fill.
I’m only talking about TC at the moment, which both tigirius and me are both on…and other members of my guild and other people. I’m not talking about other servers, since I can only be on one server at a time.
