It’s becoming increasingly frustrating to play the game, as I level. I can’t teleport anywhere near to the places I need to go, and dying sends me a solid 10 minute walk away from my body. I just died moments ago, and the four closest waypoints are contested.

The other day I got tired of it and cleared out a way point I knew I’d need to get back to shortly. It became contested again no more than 5 minutes later. No matter now often I came back and cleared it out, more mobs would spawn and pile in.

What’s the point of having teleport points nobody can teleport to?

I suppose I should have been more clear, as opposed to using gaming vernacular. I meant to say, “10 minute walk away from where I died.”

Way points become contested, at least from what I have seen, when an event is going on in that area like a town being invaded. I’ve always just completed the event and the way point goes back to normal. I guess not many people are doing these events anymore. There was one I couldn’t clear on my own so I left it be and explored the world on the way to my objective.

Some of the often-contested waypoints have counter attacks shortly after you unlock them. The two that spring immediately to mind are the Eastern Collonade, and the Valley of Lyss in Malchor’s.

Collonade will stay unmolested about 15-20 minutes after opening it.

Lyss is about 5-10 minutes. I’ve literally gotten the southern escort past the champ knight/skill point and had it go locked again. I THINK they stay open longer after that first defense but I could be wrong. The Lyss WP has the added problem of the group almost never making it past the champ knight. Which leaves the event stuck and the WP contested constantly. The only time I’ve ever be enable to do that escort is right after a server reset.

Actually I think they’re contested when a guild is in there doing a mission, so no one can use the waypoint.

The reason I think it’s like this is because it prevents other guilds from easily doubling up when someone is in there, and also because the doors close after you start the puzzle, and if you use the waypoint, you’ll be locked out of it.

So under no circumstance should someone use a waypoint if they die in the puzzle, unless there’s no other option. Normally they’d have to be rezzed in the puzzle by someone already inside to continue.

i don’t think. i know guild puzzle waypoints are active when puzzle is open

just to prevent any misunderstandings – nothing closes when you start the puzzle. tho entrances to next rooms closes after some time after being opened, that’s where you may get locked out. ofc normally no one leaves allies behind, but kittinz happen

in theory its possible to gather enough people and rerun the puzzle, but in practice if you are left behind, and it’s not possible to get portaled back into puzzle, you won’t get any cookies

Aye the guild puzzle wps are a perfect example of unnecessarily contested wps. They are always contested when I’m bringing the guild to the start. Then we start and they’re uncontested but of course at that point I’ve already told everyone under no circumstances use them as you will get trapped outside the puzzle and miss rewards.

Either leave them uncontested at all times or make it so you can teleport to the puzzle room the rest of the guild is in via a teleport at the entrance, so the wp could be used to rez and rejoin the group.

As it stands they are utterly useless.

Except in Orr, I find very few waypoints locked that are a 10-minute walk away from any other waypoints. It seems most maps are a 10-minute walk in toto. I do notice that one in the bottom left corner of Plains of Ashford is always contested….I doubt, on my server, there is always a guild in their doing the puzzle, or whatever is behind it.

Orr is ridiculous vis contested WPs. I understand why it is so but the fact that there are few people in zones means the WPs stay contested for a long while. I couldn’t buy my exotic armor when turning 80 on my server. I had to “guest” to another server that had the WP and Temple I needed in an uncontested state. At best, all I am getting out of what I have read so far is, “I DEMAND a dynamic and changing world, but you bet not have it effect me”

Orr is the max level area. All I see day in and day out is “nerf” orr, “make orr easier”………they have already done this several times.

As I see it, if you do not want a way point contested, then post up and keep it open. Otherwise I am getting sick and tired of having the highest end zones nerfed into the equivalent starting zones of other MMOs.

Rewards aside, what is the point of opening a WP that is immediately contested anyway? Who wants to babysit a waypoint? It’s a waste of time because it’s exactly the same as doing nothing.

Taking the advice in this thread, I tried to clear out a waypoint. I had catapults pinning me from either side, mobs that respawned constantly, NPCs that died as soon as I rezzed them, and a 5 minute run back every time I died.

I get the feeling the game is tuned to have about ten times more people running around than it has. I can’t imagine I’m supposed to be doing this alone.

Waypoints are constantly contested in Orr because hardly anybody goes there to clear them. And people don’t go there because waypoints are always contested AND it’s such a ridiculously annoying place to be even after the mob density and CC was toned down – it used to be even worse than it is now.

Sadly, at the moment, GW2 challenge seems to consist of mostly excessive crowd control…the worse possible way of challenging players in my opinion. Losing control of your character is not fun. It’s just frustrating and annoying, for me anyway.

Sounds like the bridge in Malchor’s Leap. Not sure if it is tagged as group, but i have no clue how to solo it. The catapults will bounce you around if you try to revive the pact engineers. And if you break a catapult some risen will instantly run over to rebuild it.

Orr is basically two maps too large, as except for the temples (and barely those, thanks to the less than user friendly karma armor offerings) and world completion there is little reason to hang around Straits of Devastation or Malchor’s Leap. And so everyone bunch up around a few waypoints in Cursed Shore, leaving the rest of Orr a wasteland more ways than one.

In essence, ANet’s downleveling do not work as well as they hoped. It do not take into account the gearing of the character, and so a downleveled green and a downleveled orange makes a noticeable difference in DPS. Between that, the almost year old increase in loot drops for downleveled characters, and now the champ bags have resulted in the high zones being abandoned save for champ farms and world boss runs. And those are much easier to do in Frostgorge, thanks to less issues with waypoints.

Another issue is that waypoints are pretty much needed, as things like crafting and trading posts can’t really be accessed in the field. So we waypoint to LA or stay in the starter zones that have easy access to home cities. And DR becomes the natural fit for that, as it is located near the middle of a zone’s long side, rather than in a corner (Rata Sum, Hoelbrak) or on the short end (Grove, Black Citadel).

Anyway, events cycle too fast and thats a problem in many regards, denying the game experience any semblance of permanence. They should have made losing an outpost or town a bigger deal (say lost(contested for a guaranteed day) and on the flipside made saving it just as important (stays that way for a day, unlocks certain unique wares like at temples) all throughout the game. Since the state of the village/outpost doesnt flip as often, just have defenses or scouting events instead of constant flipping.

I think the idea is that Orr is a battlefield and contested waypoints are a part of it. The lack of population in these zones is directly the problem. They need to give incentive for going to Orr outside of map completion, Personal Story, or running Arah.

There’s only so many Risen I can kill in a sitting before I really need a change of scenery.

Event reset is the other problem. I’ve been that guy who has tried to clear WPs, I duo with my GF and we can clear a nice path through the Risen and open WPs. We move on to the next area and 5-10min I look back at the map and it’s contested again. It’s very demotivating for someone who actually enjoys doing DEs and wants to make an impact on the map for the benefit of everyone only to realize that I really just wasted my time.

I also dislike the number of DEs that require a group, and not the kind of Group Event that can be easily duo’d, because I do DEs like that all the time, it’s the kind of Group Event where you absolutely need a group and if you don’t have one, then I guess it’s just staying contested because it just cannot be completed. <—- directly related to low pop in Orr.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

With Orr, it’s part of the chaos. There are other parts of the game where (as best I can figure) some of it is a function of lack of popularity… I’ve entered a few while leveling that don’t have anything really interesting (champ trains, event chains, or loot possibilities that were interesting) where a huge percentage of them were contested just because no players had hit those areas in a while and the mobs had moved in again.

I went to get the Arah waypoint in case I ever want to run the explorable (or story). Malchor’s leap was pretty easy to get through, I only mis-timed the catapults at the end once, Straits on the other hand….never again.

The winner though for a single waypoint rather than a map most definitely goes to The Splintered Coast Waypoint. It is contested while the pseudo-pres are going for Tequatl, it is contested for Tequatl, it is contested after Tequatl. The only time it is any use is when Tequatl is about to come up and the last one was a loss since you can dodge into the rotmouth which is handily beside the waypoint, down, then heal up so you don’t get sent to the Brooloonu Waypoint. Though I stopped doing that because I figure it must count as an exploit.

It’s very simple:
If a waypoint is remaining contested for long periods of time, it’s because the content you need to complete to win that waypoint back is so tedious, people can’t be bothered to play it.
