If there’s nothing to do, nothing new, I got everything I want, pvp/WvW is unbalanced, my story is complete, fractles/dungeons are stale, world completion is “been there done that” collecting spoons? No thanks. Crafting is done, legendaries are for the birds, there’s literally nothing else to do that intrest me.

So why do I keep coming back? Why are so many players who have done literally everything, keep playing? Why are you still playing? What is this Guild Wars attraction that won’t let go even when there’s nothing left?

Point of this post is, I can’t figure out why I’m still spending hours playing this game.

Because the game has a lot of potential, even though Anet has failed to realize that (and in fact they go in the opposite direction much of the time). Just hoping that there’s some change in management with the company and they can start getting back to what made GW1 and GW2 good… or at the least hanging around for the festivals and hoping that Anet does not remove too much of the good content from previous years.

Then everyone has the more standard reasons why people come back to any MMO (not necessarily all of the following will apply): friends, community, invested in their “progress” of knowledge/stats/etc, Role Playing, buyer’s remorse, etc.

  • The Humility of the Dev team

  • The art

I’m working on:

  • Mastering in game instruments

  • Crafting and playing the Black Market TP

I haven’t done everything yet.

I’ve been playing since launch but I play slowly (especially exploring, I don’t consider a map finished until I’ve talked to all the named NPCs, looked in every corner for jumping puzzles, taken screenshots in cool spots etc. it takes me several hours to do even small maps) and I want to do everything on 5 characters. There’s more than enough in this game to keep me occupied for a while yet.

Although having said that I also never got into the seemingly common MMO mindset of only playing one game. I don’t play other MMOs but I’ve got a lot of single player games I’m working through and other hobbies. I’ve never expected GW2 to keep me entertained all the time, so it doesn’t bother me if I don’t feel like playing it one night. I’ll do something else and come back to it when I do.

Because deep down we have highly addictive natures! I’m in the same boat as the OP. More and more when I come into the game I wonder “what am I doing? why am I doing the same old same old same old stuff in here?”

For myself, it’s because I have invested so much time in the game that I feel it will all be wasted if I just walk away. That’s honestly it. I’ve spend a lot on gems and over 2000 hours of my life in GW2. I can’t seem to just leave it all behind, even though I have much better things to do with my time, that involve NO games whatsoever. Lastly, it’s the only thing I have that feels like a way to unwind from stress. I know all the mechanics of the game – it feels safe, and I can think about my armor colors rather than the file on my desk at work that needs to get completed. It’s more involved than TV, but just barely

Hope.

I have moved GW2 to my 3rd or 4th option at this point but I still check in, in hopes that the game adds an expansion.

I got about 15-20 friends who haven’t logged in in about 4 months because they got sick of waiting. I’m still in occasionally hoping Anet releases something worth telling them about. Plus I loved GW1 and really want to see Tyria grow up and expand. Maybe by 2016 after everyone I know have stopped caring…

I have taken breaks from the game, but I return because I still have fun doing things in a game that I enjoy: combat, gear decisions, customizing looks, “questing”, exploration…basically all the things I do in an RPG with a world of complete strangers added to the mix.

The problem as I see it (and have seen developing since about two months after release) is that the things I enjoy are getting taken away or buried under stuff that the “carrot-chasers” are constantly begging for, and ANet seems to be providing.

Look no further than the changes of April with Traits, how’s that for more grind? That should slow those pesky carrot-chasers down keep them distracted for a while.

Yeah, but for me, such things are not so good.

The new system has shifted the game from what I used to enjoy to what I must do in order to enjoy it… the enjoyable ride to 80 has now been (IMO) negatively impacted with recent patches that have done nothing to improve the post-80 situation.

I still enjoy the game, but now in a much narrower range of activities, primarily I am now far more focused on getting to 80 as fast as possible (via EotM usually) so I can gear up in Exotics and start map completion and Trait Unlocking…things I used to enjoy doing while leveling to 80.

Once again, with apologies, because it really bears repeating I will let thescienceoflaw from /r/GuildWars2 address the “problem”:

Maybe the problem isn’t the MMO, maybe the problem is you. Maybe you need to examine the way you approach an MMO – many of you will spend hours playing a FPS with no progression because it is fun – and then you whine because spvp has no progression and say so “what incentive do I have to do spvp if I don’t get better gear?” (Actual statement I have heard).

Many of you will spend hours exploring the world in Skryim, doing tons of side-quests, and yet whine and complain because all there is to do in GW2 is explore the world and run dungeons and do events. That is like rushing to finish the storyline quests in Skyrim and then complaining that the game has almost no content.

Why can’t we as an MMO community take the attitude we bring to FPS games, RPG games, and apply it to an MMO? Too many kitten players feel like the only thing that motivates them in an MMO is the “carrot” of gear always being held out in front of them (and don’t know what to do with themselves without it) – and you are destroying the genre. You need to fix that kitten before you destroy the genre that we love.

We take the attitude of playing games for FUN in almost every other genre, so why can’t we do it for MMOs too?

If you got to the point where you’re trying to figure out why you’re playing a game, it’s time to take a break because chances are, you’re no longer having fun with it, and when you get to the bottom of it, that’s the one and only reason we do play games to begin with.

That’s the beauty if it, if you’ve already done all that, then I’m guessing you got waay more than your money’s worth out of the game, there’s no shame or anything bad about going out, play other MMOs, or other online/offline games, and if you ever get the itch again, come back anytime. And if you keep in installed and remember to log in every 2 weeks once the living story kicks off again, then you’d most likely have at least some to do for a little while if you do come back later..

Have to admit that taking an 8-ish month hiatus (due to RL issues) and finding all the “Town Cloths” (to include toys etc) gone on my return was not fun.
I have the standard “ask us for a refund for the items you bought and we deleted” ticket in, but not holding my breath.
I liked GW2 enough to buy crystals with $ to get in-game eye-candy, only to find it gone? I’m holding out my final verdict on how it plays out, but if they screw me over then they will never see another cent from me.

In general though, I play because I find it fun, though “fun” is subjective to things such as noted above (as well as tons of other things).

Because it’s fun, really. I do like crafting in this game; I do enjoy WvW and EotM; and I do enjoy explorer mode in dungeons – even though I did most of the several times. Some of the experience is the interaction with other people – you never know who you might end up with, and sometimes it’s the people that make the dungeon fun (even if you wipe).

So yeah, GW2 isn’t a perfect game, and still needs some polishing, but the base of it is good.

I’ve turned to pvp as a last resort before i quit the game forever.

Just hit r70…. and idk if I will have any desire to keep playing after I hit 80 at all.

The game is boring…. stale in so many aspects.

We can’t even grind anything, since it goes against Anet’s grand design.

Anet doesn’t let us grind…. and they don’t give us new content often enough…. so we just accessorize and play dressup on our 12+ fully geared lvl 80 toons.

The wardrobe system is nice in some aspects and serves as a time waster….. but it is by no means a replacement for actual content.

We should have had a full-blown expansion already complete with new races and classes.

Main reasons I don’t play GW2 anymore, is no meaningful progression for any of my characters. No rewards to aim for. Essentially there are no goals I personally want to do in GW2, so I feel any time spent in the game is a utter waste of time.

I could drop this game like a bad habit in the blink of an eye if I wanted to – but I have a lot of hope for this game, and I’d really kick myself if I’d invested all this time and effort to just give up on it on a whim.

I don’t think they were talking about the tonics since they mentioned spending “RL money for eye-candy” I would assume they bought the outfits like the Mad King set or Pirate set which suddenly disappeared after the feature pack was released. Those outfits are put into the wardrobe in the outfits section after you reclaim them from the armor trader.
