I’m fairly new to the game so this topic has probably been brought up before, but what is the logic for dyes not being account wide? Like many new players, I made a character I wasn’t that thrilled with so I started working on an alt. Shock and bewilder when I discover all those dyes I used aren’t available on my alt?!

Is this something that could change in the future?

Before the game was out I could sort of see the logic in anet’s decision but now I can’t. Dye drops happen too infrequently (for me at least) which means that I won’t come close to getting all dyes even across all of my 5 toons. They should be changed to be account wide.

Because Chrystin Cox, Monetization Producer, person in charge of the gem store, and former employee of Nexon, made it that way. When Nexon acquired 15% of NCSofts stock and became a majority share holder, they put Mrs. Cox in charge of the GW2 gem store to protect their investment.

A couple weeks later, certain aspects of the game start changing, and not for the better. Mrs. Cox first announcement was to change the way dyes worked. They would no longer be unlocked across all characters on your account, but rather on individual characters. Furthermore, dyes were now soulbound. Unidentified dyes were still tradeable, but once you identified a dye, the dye was soulbound. At the exact same time this announcement was made, dye packs showed up in the gem store.

There was a massive backlash, and eventually Mrs. Cox caved in and compromised and allowed unidentified dyes to be tradeable. Later ANet “accidentally” increased the drop rate of unidentified dyes in an attempt to justify nerfing the drop rate to even lower than what it used to be.

Does anyone even buy dye packs? I’m curious as to whether this strategy worked or if its just making the game that much more unappealing.

Stuff goes here.

During the head start I spent about 100 or more dollars on dye packs due to my thinking that dyes are account bound affairs these are one time purchases! But some how I missed the memo on them becoming soulbound and didn’t find out till a month later when I made my 1st alt which made me furious.

I have to disagree. I love the fact that Dyes aren’t account wide. This actually gives me something to do on my alternate chars other then simply craft my way up to 80, because I’m too kitten lazy to you know, play the game.

I do agree however that Dyes should have a way higher drop rate if they aren’t going to be account bound (hopefully never will be). The market prices are a bit stupid due to how rare they drop. I’m someone who pretty much kills everything I see in Guild Wars 2, and “Maybe” walk out after 2-3 hours of playing with one unidentified dye.

I also agree that ArenaNet has to pull their act together. Guild Wars 2 is becoming (my opinion) nothing more then a mess. Broken Events, Broken Mechanics, etc. etc.

Of course, what’s a company without money? Probably screwed themselves over letting Nexon in. (I don’t know too much about Nexon personally, just hear rumors, and or speculation)

No. It’s a good thing people are different. I do agree with the one said, if I could buy the exact one’s I want, I would do that. I think that could be said of a lot of things in the Store. But it’s mostly are RNG, now if everyone was like me, that would totally flop. But we hear from people that say they spent $100 and got nothing they wanted, spent $1000 and got nothing. It’s amazing really what some will spend, but we are different, I must respect that. That said, I don’t really respect what Anet is doing, to me it’s somewhat shady, feels like a different company then I remembered.

Were any of you around during BWE1 when they actually had the old account-wide dye system in place? The process was SLOW, tedious and grindy. You had to wait for a Colorful Dye Seed to drop, take it to dye manufacturer for cultivation, then wait 24 hours for a soulbound unidentified dye (to bypass the 24 hour waiting period, you had to buy Magic Plant Food from the gem store).

I much prefer the new system. It’s easier to understand, FAR less grindy than the old system and we can actually trade between characters (so we can send duplicate dyes between our alts and our friends or buy dyes on the market). And not having to buy Magic Plant Food to speed up the process means it’s much cheaper over the long run. I’d hazard a guess that ArenaNet lost out on a lot of potential gem store revenue with this change.

Well money is of course one side of the medal, maybe (cough) the bigger one.

But let’s be a lil’ optimistic and “fair”
- Dyes are optional and this game B2P (maybe the dyes should be cheaper, okay)
- Buying Dyes in the TP for f.e. three characters means three times more gold “vanished” from the game (TP-“tax”)
- It encourages players to try/use different dye-sets for different characters

Over time, preserving the scarcity of a desireable comodity is good for the economy. Remember GW1? Black dye was worth something, ALL THE TIME. And you had to get one vial per piece of armor. Changed your armor? Time to go drop 7-8k per piece on new armor.

Drop rate on dye is lower now than at launch, no denying it, but let’s face it… with un-id dye going at 2.5 silver, there was no reason to not buy huge gobs of the stuff off the TP and spam it for luck…. if you ‘found’ a rare dye, you found something of little value.

I got Midnight Ice dye recently…. spent a good long while thinking: “Use it…. or sell it…. and if I use it, which character gets it?” The rarity made it a special moment for me. In the end, I used it on my thief… how could I not?

Since we can trade identified dye, pass it around to alts as another poster said, I don’t have a problem with the current system. Don’t get me wrong, I wish I had more options for my alts, they’re so lacking in choices compared to my main, and I really think about specific colors before I buy them…. but, I plan to play this game for years, there’s plenty of time to get things, and years from now, I’ll still be adding to options on my characters, as will we all, and when we get rare dye to drop in the future, it will have retained more value, instead of just getting added to an ever growing heap of sell orders on the TP.

imo, if the dyes were account wide, the drop rate would have to be decreased to compensate. Otherwise, their price on the TP would plummet as time went on. And then this topic would be about why dye drops are so low.

Their given excuse was that obtaining dye in-game was “part of the progression of your character” or something like that.

Yeah, it’s a terrible reason and everyone knows it, including the devs. But I’m betting they make a lot of money on how expensive dyes are right now, so don’t expect a change here.

Remember when our developers talked about “strengthening the core game”?
How’d that work out for us so far?
Now let’s try some ideas that will really work.

While I’d like to agree to the gem store conspiracy, I honestly think it’s intended as a simple gold sink.
But for the type of player I am, it doesn’t work either way.
I never buy dyes from the gemstore.
I very, very rarely buy dyes from the BLTC.
I will once in a blue moon, when I have the mats, craft a dye.

But after recent changes in the direction of the game, I’ve completely sworn off of buying gems with cash. I will now only ever buy gems with in-game currency, if at all.
Once they get rid of any stupid ideas of vertical progression, they will once more start receiving cash from me.

Given you can buy the Digital Deluxe upgrade with gems, I’m going to assume that any expansions will also be purchasable with gems, so I’ll regularly start converting gold to gems so that I can buy them without giving ArenaNet a penny.

Please note that due to restrictions placed on my account, I am only allowed 1 post per hour.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.

Considering the miserable state of the in-game economy and the complete lack of effort on ANet’s part to improve it, I don’t feel the in-game price of dyes really relevant. It’s an enormous inconvenience for new players who don’t know better and use their dyes while levelin up and still trying to figure out which class they most enjoy.

Not to mention it kind of kills the fun in making an alt just to take advantage in some nice level80 gear you’ve been stashing for a rainy day when you can’t get your character to look as good as your other character.

Now I’m one of the many players who will never spend more than the upfront cost of the game on in-game content and I’m going to have serious trouble committing to this game if these little things like dyes, terrible class design, terrible class balance, and no end-game to speak of keep getting in my way.
