Why aren't there dense forests in Tyria?
My guess is that peple would whine to much over the disability to fight properly. And due to this game having a very mobile combat system it will be really anoying.
On a side note, a dungeon with trees everywhere and plant traps and kitten would be totally epic
I blame the stupid gathering daily for the reason of mass deforestation in Tyria.

Haha, I like that.
With the optimization in this game, dense forests would probably lock up your computer with lag.
Perhaps there ARE many more trees, but we can’t see them due to culling issues! =D
…but I prefer the deforestation theory.. >.>
I need a good guild. Q_Q
The Woodland cascades are probably pretty tree-ish, tho it’s not in the game at this moment
Probably because it would make it really awkward to get a clear view of what’s going on.
Same reason most caves, and even houses in 3rd person games have large rooms and high ceilings, otherwise the camera is clipping through walls or jammed right behind you.

I disagree. I’ve seen it done in multiple mmos without issues.
Head to WvWs, go to Champions orchard (or similar area on any borders map).
Head to where the spiders are & fight.
You can see sod all at the best of times /cringe
Deforest the world I say, get shot of it all!!

Rocking Wizard Wars until this mess of a game is fixed…
Very few if any games have dense forest quite simply because it doesn’t make for good gameplay. There are a few areas in game that have trees close together and if you go stand in the middle of the trees you will find it much harder to play. They block your attacks from hitting enemies, they clutter the camera and field of vision and they also take up resources, the more trees that are around you the more your graphics card has to render.
Caledon Forest is actually decently dense, just in a different sense because it’s more jungle-like that forest-like.
You also got Hellion Forest in Iron Marches. Very dark, very moody. Not that big though, but it shows that the engine is more than capable of making a good looking forest with a dense canopy.
Too many collisions and a lot of pathing to program. Wayfarer Foothills (the southern, green part) is dense enough.
ASUS Sabertooth Z77 | 16GB Corsair Dominator Platinum 1866MHz @ 2400MHz
Samsung 840 PRO 512GB SSD | Windows 10 x64
I’d wager it’s a combination of gameplay and resources. Nice trees will have a lot of polygons, especially if it would have nice foliage. If you’re ok with the trees looking like this it could probably be done.
Last thing my norn needs is a dense forest camera insanity.
well they have to get rid of the camera-issues before adding very tense forests. Try doing the skill-point in the borderlands near the windmill where a lot of spiders attack you. It’s quite difficult to see anything relevant during battle when you’re playing a profession who needs to look down due to aoe-placing.
Between pathing, camera, constant obstruction, and issues of getting stuck there is a reason almost no MMO’s have dense forests.

Lol, that’s your definition of a forest??? Its an orchard! Barely big enough to be called trees, its freakin bushes.
Compare with Hellion forest. I have no problem with my max size Norn.

It seems odd that we don’t have any areas that actually feel like you’re in a forest. Is this just something overlooked? Is there limitations in the game that doesn’t allow it?
i miss that too
the very first starter area of the norn is probably the most foresty part of the game.
i love that spot and when i started playing gw2 i really hoped there would be more such areas in the game.

you don’t get my post at all, please read it again. I just named a location in GW2 where it’s difficult to see what’s going on because of objects (here: trees).

Yes you did and I mentioned the reason why its not a forest. Its an orchard. With very, very small trees in comparison to what you generally find in a forest. Like in the picture I posted to compare Hellion Forest, where you dont have any such visibility issues. Two entirely different concepts of design.
If you call an orchard a forest you might as well call a vineyard a swamp.

Well, they had to get materials to create LA, DR, BC, Hoelbrak, Rata Sum, outposts, camps, barriers, trenches, and other structures all over Tyria.
Yeah agree with OP that some really dense forests would be amazing but as our trusty forums buddies have pointed out there are lots of reasons why.
I remember the forests in Lotro had some amazing atmosphere, but then that’s proberbly rose tinted glasses
Out if the whole Tyria game world the forests in the Char areas seem the most atmospheric. Some lovely morning mists and sunny glades.

wow your comprehension skills are outstanding, where did I call that location a forest??
Dont forget you got your dense forest theme in SAB world 1 zone 2!
Here is some dense forest. Anyone know which game?
Monster Girl Quest? O.o
Where do you think all the supply in WvW comes from? All the forests in Tyria are being cut down to power the engines of eternal war – flame rams!
This is turning into semantics about who called which collection of trees a forest, weald, orchard or woodland. Dont do that.
Lets just stick with wanting more large forest areas in the game. There are some spots with many trees but usually its just a very small area. Considering how huge some forest areas on earth are I find that this kind of fauna is underrepresented in the game.
Because zones were made nice and neat to fit in the giant rectangles, and forests take up too much space that could be filled with POIs, vistas, hearts, etc.
Sad, but true.

I love that area, well the map without the branded part
If we ever see Cantha in an expansion, I imagine Echovald is still around. It’d be pretty cool to see that with gw2’s engine.
Once you get past all the trees you should be able to see the forest. A lot of the forests are blocked by trees unfortunately.
Ye, i’d like to see in GW2 more forest like areas with tons of foliage
Check attachment, would You like to see sth like this?
It’s from Polish medival MMO under development (Gloria Victis)
here is the second photo, unfortunately i can add only one attachment

You can attach more pictures by clicking preview after selecting each attachement.
That image also looks more like a first person view which would not have the same issues.
Another area besides WvW where you can see the problem with dense trees is Eda’s apple orchard in Queensdale. The problem is short trees.
I assure You it is 3rd person game
The centaurs chopped them all down…like open fields to gallop across you see…
I was leveling an alt today and came across a very dense forest in fields of ruin. I mean I could still walk through it, but it covered the sky and was fairly thick imo.
Last thing my norn needs is a dense forest camera insanity.
This, the camera wouldn’t work in a forest, it hardly works in the apple trees as it is…
Because the game’s camera wouldn’t be able to handle it.
The Cascade Woodlands to the north (North East of DR) should have some nice forests. If they ever add it in the game.
