Topic is the question.

People will probably say “Because that would defuse the limited character slots” Well I say no it wouldn’t. You can still limit people to 5 characters and still give them the option for each character slot to pick a server.

I assume it’s probably to stop people cheating at WvW.

You could create characters on your opponents severs (either stick to ones you’re often matched against or move them as needed) and then use them to open up gates and generally help your “main” server.

Plus, once guesting is added you can play on any server anyway.

And we have free server transfers in the meantime.

As stated, most likely because of WvWvW play. Besides sabotaging an “enemy” team (which you can still do via daily transfers if you take it that seriously), having a presence on multiple servers tends to discourage loyalty to a specific community.

So server A has a +18% buff to gathering? Use those toons to farm.
Server B has a very dedicated PvP guild? Use those toons for PvP.
Friends on server C stopped logging in? No reason for me to do it either.

I’m surprised they still allow free transfers – it still allows these things to happen, but it would be a lot easier if your toons are spread out over multiple servers.
