Why can't we "gift" upgrades?
Once in a while, I’d like to gift gems without using a gift card. >_>
If the game gets good enough to actually bring people in again, I’d like my friends to get LS2 as a gift.
Or maybe I’ll just buy gift cards, but it’d still be a nice feature.

I agree, let us share gem shop items with others.
It’s a limitation in the existing code. They don’t have a way to prevent you from buying an item that someone has already bought so they just don’t let you gift it at all.
If they thought that market was large enough to merit the time it would take to fix the code they would have done it by now.

I thought it was so hackers couldn’t attempt to gift upgrades to potential targets, to see whether the account would be worth the effort or not. Might be wrong, but I’m sure I’ve read that as reasoning before.
I know in some different games you cant gift certain items as well. Probably so there is higher chance that the person who usually doesnt buy the currency because they receive alot of gifts, would invest some cash in the game as well.
So how does 1 help a friend get upgrades?

(gems to) gold to gems, or buy them a gem card and gift it. Big loss if you transfer from gems to gold first.
There are 1200 gem and 2000 gem cards.
I helped a friend get an upgrade by exchanging gems to gold, mailing them the gold which they then proceeded to exchange that gold into gems to buy their upgrade.
This is the only known way to technically still gift ‘upgrades’ to friends I suppose.
This small change would definitely place more of my $ in ANet’s pocket…
Hopefully they’ll make it so eventually.
