Prior to launch, we used to have a launcher that was full screen, that was animated (sort of anyway), and with music.

At launch they ditched that for the current launcher to highlight their stupid “news” that we can get by just going on the GW2 website anyway, but there was the command line arguement to -useoldlauncher that worked for a short while.

Then it was disabled, and everyone was forced to use the more boring static launcher.

Why?

So that patches can be downloaded and installed a lot easier.

the old launcher still patched.. how do you think people using the old launcher updated..

I seem to recall there being something about security.

I would be silly of them to support 2 launchers from a code perspective.

They decided giving people a chance to see the news in their launcher, likely because many players do not visit the website, works better especially because half the news is about new things in their cash shop.

if you have auto-play enabled you don’t get that garbage anyway
