Why can t we wear town clothes in combat?
Because being able to hide your profession for as long as possible IS a potential advantage. It’d be cool if you could set it so allies still saw your town clothes if you want.

Everything I say is only in reference to PvE and WvW.
I disagree with having an advantage in fighting. First its really obvious what the opponent is unless you just started playing. Then it is beneficial to the opponent because you lose stats from not using combat gear.
Oh I’d assumed you meant you’d keep your armor stats. If not, this would be a tremendous disadvantage to you. Like, I don’t see much point in your fighting at all since you’d die pretty much instantly.
But that aside, it is an advantage, or could be. For example, other Thieves are a lot easier for my Thief to take out than Guardians, typically. If the person I’m fighting doesn’t have any profession-specific buffs, I won’t necessarily know how hard to go in on them. Do I need to space out my CC and damage or should I lead by using Shadow Refuge to get really close? It’s not always going to make a difference, but it certainly can.
Of course, this could be solved by sticking the person’s profession into their target informtation. You get to see their health, whether they’re upleveled or not, and their buffs. Having to ascertain their profession strictly from their armor class and buffs is a pointless and silly barrier to entry.

Better idea then this “advantage” business… Only allow these town clothes “outfits” into WvWvW and PvP. Make it PvE only and you at least have a large part of the game playing dress up again, and a reason to have gem store items. Maybe multiple cosmetic outfit slots that can be saved and loaded to allow for more outfits… But that would make too much sense or be impossible with whatever system Arenanet uses I assume.

Because they are T O W N clothes and not battle clothes/armor.

it didnt destroy immersion in guild wars 1 when i ran around in my jade empire costume, white mantle costume, or shining blade costume.
i want to wear my mad king costume in combat like i could in guild wars 1, i am never in town long enough and almost always forget that i even bought the thing because i never use it.
No matter what attacks me I always fight them roughly the same way based on the weapon I have at the moment and the distance the person is from me.
Then you are not a very good player.
There isn’t much more to say than that.
In the original Guild Wars, costumes (the better designed version of town clothes) couldn’t be worn in PvP either.

simple, make them PvE only
Now I feel like a total noob after reading this topic. How can you tell the class of a player by just looking at the armor? I can understand that you can put them into heavy, medium or light armor, but how can you tell the diffrence from a staff using mesmer and elementalist, by just looking at clothes?

Yes cause running around with a Quaggan backpack or an 8-bit video game backpack, while swinging an 8-bit greatsword or shooting rainbow unicorns out of a bow with an Anet logo on them or beating people with a giant candy cane, while having a miniature Logan Thackery run along side you, doesn’t ruin immersion right? It’s obvious Anet doesn’t care about immersion or the game being lore-friendly. They do whatever will make them money, regardless if it fits into the game or not.

You can’t, not until they start shooting at you or you highlight them and look at their health bar. It’s just an excuse PvPers use to make it seem like a big deal, when in actuality, it’s not. Visual appearance means nothing in GW2 when multiple people share the same armor type. They are against it cause they just don’t want to see it. Period. It has nothing to do with visual distinction of the profession, it’s just cause they don’t want it. That’s all.

The dye system is great, the system for what you can wear is not. I really liked LOTROs system of having 3 (plus unlockable slots if you wanted) outfit styles to choose from, and being able to use anything dropped in game or bought in the store as you outfit.
Town clothes wouldn’t work for spvp/wvw, but would be cool in the PvE world.

Why would that ruin immersion? There are chefs and pirates in Tyria. It wouldn’t be such a big stretch if they are all able to fight too.

Devs have stated the immersion factor as the reason why town clothes are not active in combat.
But as already stated by some…backpacks break the immersion.
Titles and nameplates above heads ruin that immersion.
Heck, even doing the /dance while a boss hovers over you is immersion breaking, or bunny-hopping all over the place.
It’s a weak reason, but that’s the reason they gave. The only problem now is that no-one is really interested in getting town clothes from the Gem Store if they are so restrictive. I’m quite sure people interested more in the visual look of their character want to show it off…but don’t want to have to stop themselves from playing the game to do so.
Besides, if immersion was really an issue, they would have created only lore-friendly clothing options instead of silly stuff like boxing gloves.

Some people have a delicate, fragile sense of immersion. A sense of immersion that is somehow still able to withstand seeing candy cane hammers, Quaggan backpacks or unicorns with the ANet logo being shot from a bow. Or if not delicate and fragile then certainly selective.

I don’t even think you know what immersion is now.
Having the brand name of a company in the real world, inside your video game, is instant immersion ruining. That’s like saying if there was billboards of Pepsi everywhere, it wouldn’t ruin immersion. Running around with a shrunken version of an NPC is immersion breaking. Wearing a GW2 baseball Hat and T-Shirt in game is immersion breaking.
The Chef costume actually looks like normal wear and fits in the game world, and even looks like it could be light armor (I have this outfit on my Norn, and it looks like robes). It is in no way immersion breaking for someone to wear that into combat.
Edit: Added screenshot of the Chef Costume. Now tell me this does not look like Light Armor and would break immersion if you saw this in combat….

Woudl love for Anet to make Town Clothes wearable in combat and an option to just have the hat on with normal armor..My Warrior needs to charge into battle with a Panda or Pink Quaggan hat..thing

Immersion is personal, I get that. But saying that the chef costumes in battle are stupid yet still be ok with a number of thematically irrelevant equipment in-game is just hypocrisy.

Not all the Guild Wars 1 costumes were realistic. The Lunatic Court Finery that you could wear in combat made you either headless, have a flaming pumpkin head or headless but with flames where your head should be. So your argument here doesn’t stand. The Rainment of the Lich was also not realistic armor.

Unicorns with the ANet logo are fine because its currently allowable but costumes wearable in combat are not? That’s not a true argument against becasue all ANet has to do is make them allowable and then they are fine, according to what you are saying.

I would love to be able to wear town clothes everywhere. And while I do agree that it may break immersion for some overly sensitive players, there already are a lot of things that don’t look natural at all.

The other day in wvw, I saw a norn with a comically large mustache drop a snow man on top of someone and then put their disco ball mace away in order to do the carlton dance on the corpse. Trying to say that a chef outfit is somehow immersion breaking is pretty ridiculous at this point.
I agree with posts here when it comes to hiding your profession in WvW.
Your profession isn’t hidden in sPvP though nor is it in PvE.
I don’t think costumes or holiday headgear was allowed in GW1’s PvP areas :o so keeping town clothes, toy weapons, etc out of both sPvP and WvW areas would be nice for GW2 as well. But it doesn’t matter in PvE because 1) People can click on you and see what profession you are, 2) PvE mobs don’t care what profession you are, and 3) Toy weapons are costume brawl weapons so those wouldn’t work out in combat anyways.
I mean, look at it this way. If ArenaNet is letting people walk around with no helmets, no shoulder pieces, and no gloves then I’m sure they wouldn’t care if I wore a pair of reading glasses in combat or a witch hat. -_- Go ahead and check in-game, there’s little check boxes that allow those pieces to be hidden.
Spectacles were actual armor pieces in the first game! Crowns and Bandanas were also armor in GW1! Come now, if we have the option to walk around with our heads and hands exposed, why not allow us to wear just the head pieces of our town clothing, at least?
Wearing no helmet at all to a dangerous fight is more immersion-breaking than wearing a witch hat or a nice cap on your head. That’s all I have to say to you RP folks. There’s also new dragon wing back pieces that should be breaking your immersion, does that mean people should cease from wearing them? How about the many plush backpacks in the game?
Also I made a thread a while ago on Festival and Gemstore clothing storage may interest some of you
