Why cant we trade
It’s not the same, but almost is the same. You can still mail items/money to other players using the mail system. So if you wanted to just give something to someone, mail it. Otherwise selling things on TP is the same end result as just selling it to another player. Just might not be who you wanna sell it to :P
They deliberately left it out and created the TP instead, to reduce scamming. If you trade on the honor system then it’s on you if the other person cheats you.

I wonder if the real reason was to reduce scamming rather than to more readily apply a surcharge to all trades in order for the basic function of an economy to act as a gold sink.

Oh, I’m sure it was the primary reason.
It’s kinda funny… one of the complaints in GW1 was that it didn’t have an auction hall, and that you had to go out-of-game for an ebay equivalent.
Reasons why:
1 – People would try to buy/sell to bypass the TP and it’s money sink that is done by the fees. So we would have 1 less money sink in the game which let’s face it is a HUGE one.
2 – People would scam others due to such a system. Yes you may say it’s the one persons fault for being fooled and not paying attention, but still it’s just too risky. I remember I was scammed in another game like this after playing for a solid 2 years and I should have known better. I knew all their tricks and knew not what to fall for. But at this time I was really tired (after being up all night) and wasn’t paying too much attention and bang I fell for it. It was nothing big either, it was really small and not really even worth the scammers account being at risk of being banned but he still did it anyway (probably a stolen account/gold seller).
That’s 2 reasons I am sure there are plenty more.
I actually like the mail system better, at first when the game launched I was against it but I find it much easier to get items from other players or send some off that having to go find someone first get within range of them and wait for popdown menus.
It really is easier. I come from other mmo’s much older and I hate having to go and find people now to give them something or have to go back to a major city just to send something to the guild master.
never really understood the whole “to prevent scamming” argument. I mean, almost every trading system in every game has a lock-in feature to confirm the trade once you know you want to trade for sure. Having to rely on the game’s mail system seems like a way to increase scamming.
that being said, I wish I could rely on the game’s mail system for trading as well.. I’ve gotten used to playing games where the mail system has cod (cash on delivery), where you can add an item and a set price that the receiver must pay enable to receive the item. (and if for some reason they don’t accept it, the item gets returned after a few days or something).
It feels odd and a bit unfinished at times to only have the Trading post; however, as a person who’s majority of item’s sold have been below 1 gold, I can’t really complain about the posting fee, as it isn’t really that high for what I sell.
I have never seen a post from anyone in ANET saying you cannot trade with other players. I have seen posts saying that they will not do anything at all to help you if you do trade with other players. So if you want to trade do so.
