Q:
Why did ANet name a profession "thief"?
A:
Because this game is going to be PEGI 3 soon so having words like kill, assassin, annihilation or expansion is forbidden.
My thief has stolen feathers and even an egg from the person of a moa as it walked around, and done so with such skill that the bird didn’t even notice.
I’d say they wear that title well.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
They should’ve named it rogue instead
Thief is fine. Would you have preferred, Robber? Burglar? Bandit? Caper? I didn’t think so. Thieves are all about the stealth, and the challenge.
Because one of the central mechanics of the thief is their ability to steal environmental weapons. Rogue is just as stupid a term. They should have stuck with Assassin, which is what we had in GW1 and essentially exactly what the Thief profession is based off. But it seems like they were trying to get rid of Canthan references so they named if Thief.
I still liked Assassin way better than ’’Thief'’.
They do even have lots of NPCs, armor parts, weapons and stuff like that named as ’’Assassin'’ anyway, so I don’t see the point of re-name basically the same profession from Assassin to Thief...
I remember back in the early days of Ultima Online people could actually be thieves by using their stealth skill to open other players’ inventories and try to take items.
Can you imagine the amount of paranoia and rage if thieves can nick your legendary out of your inventory?

That’s why insurance was invented. You paid to keep things from being stolen.
Support your local environmentally friendly farmers.

So now you want to nerf their name? :o
;)
The thief class in this game is pretty close to the D&D model of the thief, might be why they named it the same

Because teef would sound silly.
Because one of their profession mechanics is “Steal.”

Imagine a parallel universe where the Thief was originally named Caper.
“Caper is fine. Would you have preferred Robber? Burglar? Bandit? Thief? I didn’t think so.” Nice confirmation bias right there =)

Clearly a person who doesn’t understand the nature of the post. You call my question a demand for “nerf”? Dear god…
Because one of their profession mechanics is “Steal.”
Then that would also be part of my question as well. It is inherently incriminating, and I question the nature of Tyrian society where profession like such is regarded “acceptable.”

Well said
GW2 community gonna just complain on anything….
Umm… Becouse a Thief is a Thief.
They don’t have to be stealthy in this game so assasin should be the wrong name. The sub-category of a Thief could be Assasin but if you trait yourself outside shadow arts… Go for no stealth and venoms instead and you may be umm… A defiler :P
A rogue is more of a vanderer, someone who have learned to live on the streets… The word Rogue suits no better just becouse it is used in WoW.
But something that will always be there is the ability to steal and what classes steal stuff?

It’s a slow week.
GW2 community gonna just complain on anything….
You think this was a complaint?
I was looking for an insight, as why.
GW2 community seems too superficial to have a simple question-and-answer thread.
Well in literature or films or games several normaly criminal acts a depicted as romantic or adventurous. Think about the picture of pirates and compare it to some news about nowadays pirates. It’s robbery. Have you never seen films about bankrobbery? The cools guys with the incredible smart plan?
Also the view on war and violence in general is often highly romanticised in games or films. So I don’t think that thiefs have the same negative meaning in a roleplay context as they have in real life.

Thieves steal skills as a part of their mechanics.

Because theyr main mechanic is “steal”. Thief is more apropiate.
And the part with “violence”: Immagine a thief trying to steal from ur house or ur pocket and u see him “- hey u lil dirty thief stop right there”…..u will get a backstab asap :-)

Because the class thief has always traditionally been a profession in the RPG genre, dating way back to early fantasy novels and early table top role playing game such as D&D, A-Net decided to take a traditional path when they chose the professions for this game.
They have 1 skill about theft (which can be upgraded to damage, poison and incapacitate the target at the same time,) the rest are for killing things or utility. Warriors aren’t “Thrillseekers” despite gaining adrenaline being their F1 because the rest of their skills are about weapon mastery and physical prowess.
Because ‘assassin’ could not be used due to its connection with Cantha.
(the same applies to the engineer, which is an alt persona of the Cantha’s ritualist proffession)
Which is also why you likely won’t be seeing a Cantha expansion.

The thief class is to describe it’s skills for combat purposes. It doesn’t mean that it’ll use those skills to rob houses or steal handbags.
The game calls it a thief. You can call it whatever you like.
Some people call the Ranger class a ‘hunter’
I find Thief less negative compared to Assassin. Probably they simply needed another name to make GW2 different, but it makes sense too.
Assasin play style is different compared to thief and offer less spec diversity, thief>assasin, assasin is a part of the main thing :thief. It just wouldn’t go with the current build system.

People are lazy when they type so you all would just be “Kiiten”, as the class name is shortened.
We need to remember that whereas ‘stealing’ is generally a bad thing to do, killing is even worse!
People call assassins assassins but it doesn’t mean they’ll commit an unjustifiable homicide with their ‘assassin’ skills.
Same can be said about thief. If they are called a thief, doesn’t mean they will do unjustifiable theft.

Truly a smart guy!
Maybe it’s the Star Wars fan in me… but I love the word… Scoundrel.
:D
There’s also Rapscallion! That’s a good one…
We should go with Mountebank. Then the next time we get some idiot post demanding mounts, we can say they’re already in-game.
The stealth archetype doesn’t really have a name that isn’t negative in some way. Frankly, most of the other classes (except Guardian) can be renamed to be negative, but no alternative for Thief would be completely positive.
’cause Squishy Pokey Stabby Thing was reserved.

Oh, I dunno, rename Guardian “Crusader” and there you go.

Very off topic but spelling wasn’t standardised during his time so it doesn’t matter if you spell it with an ‘e’ or not. He spelt his own name in like 3 different ways off the too of my head
